Really, sports? Me? Not sure, depends on the color of the uni-forms I guess! (Andy Kiener) The team I root for is the best of the best: Miami Heat! A lot of people don’t know this but I will share it: Dwyane Wade and I have a true “connec on.” (Cha-rell Ellio ) I am not a sports fan (Magali Maldonado) Oakland Raiders! But of course I root for anything New York! Yankees, Mets, Nets, Knicks, Bills, Jets, Giants! (Jasiel Guzman) Team Serena for tennis; Team Jamaica for men’s track and fi eld (Cord Stone) Which what? (Sue Fiedler) Pi sburgh Pirates. Go Bucks! (Samantha Gaerte) Basketball - Knicks, Baseball - Yan-kees, Football - Bills. One day they will win, maybe (Tayrin Tor-
res) I’m not much of a sport watcher, but my husband lives and breathes sports so by default I have to root for the Sabres, Steelers, though I do secretly like the Patriots but do not tell my husband!! And the Yankees. I think that covers it (Nichole Frank) Denver Broncos fan always and forever; diehard Yan-kees fan; as for basketball, I’m more of a fan for the players like Kevin Durant, Joakim Noah, and Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili (Michelle Santos) NONE (Anthonie King) I don’t like sports (Lolita Small) Sabres (Krista Fenske) The Buff alo Bills, even if they do break my heart (Nicole Coonly) SU Basketball, but the ACC just isn’t the same as the Big East (John Carocci)

Have you ever wondered when to use the suffi x st, nd, rd or th when typing a date or number? Well, let me introduce you to ordinal numbers. What’s an ordinal number? An ordinal number is used to indicate position or the order in which something occurs. Th ese are ordinal numbers: fi rst (1st); second (2nd); third (3rd); fourth (4th); fi ft h (5th); sixth (6th); seventh (7th); eighth (8th); ninth (9th); tenth (10th); eleventh (11th); twelft h (12th); twentieth (20th); twenty-fi rst (21st); twenty-second (22nd); twenty-third (23rd); twenty-fourth (24th); thirtieth (30th); one hundredth (100th); one thousandth. Never use an ordinal number when typing out a complete date, e.g.: July 1, 2014. If you type July 1st, 2014 in a lett er or email, you are using incorrect grammar. However, it is perfectly acceptable to use ordinal numbers when you are only using the day and not the year, e.g.: Th e 1st of July is the fi nal date for submitt ing the application. If ordinal numbers contain just one word, spell it out instead of using numerals: Th is was the fi rst meeting between the two associates. She was working on the third draft of her lett er. However, if the number contains two words, use numerals instead of writing out the numbers. For example: We were on our 33rd trip to the Adirondacks. (Spelling out thirty-third is incorrect grammar usage. Th ere are two words, thirty and third. Th erefore, numbers should be used.) - Kim Harding

STAFF NOTES I would like to thank the Evergreen As-sociation for choosing me as a recipient
of the Catalyst Grant to help with my tuition for nursing school. Th ree years ago, I came to Evergreen as a social worker and was inspired to go back to school aft er work-ing closely with our clients and providers and learning more about chronic disease. I would like to especially thank Jason Rein for inspiring me and encouraging me in the beginning, when I was still a Case Manager. I now have the opportunity to work with
him everyday in our medical practice as a Medical Technician and I have learned so much from him about patient care and how to to connect with patients and help them improve their lives. Th anks again to everyone for all your help and support. - Gloria Kornowski Congratulations go out to Daisy Rochez, Harm Reduction Counselor at Community Access Services. Daisy has completed training to become an HIV/Hepati-tis C Test Counselor, and she will join Jess Lehsten at CAS in off ering HIV and Hepa-titis C screening at sites throughout the community. Well done Daisy!! - Kate Gallivan
How did you get your start at Evergreen? How long have you worked here? I knew of Evergreen when I was working at my for-mer job, and saw that they were hiring some research and development folks. I also knew they were gay-friendly and had programming and services I thought were imperative to the community; for me it’s a lot easier to get up and go to work when I’m invested in the suc-cess of the organization I’m employed at. I was pretty set on making a career change, and so I sent in my résumé. The rest as they say, is his-tory. Tell us a bit about your personal life (hobbies, family, etc.) I’m one of four boys in my family, and my parents are high school sweethearts that are still disgustingly in love. Growing up with 3 brothers was always a hoot because there was always someone to hang out with or build a fort with. Right now in my life, I pretty much don’t own anything that lives - plants or animals, mainly because that’s a lot of responsibility. I did just save a plant that was going to be thrown out and put it in my of ice, but even now I feel overwhelmed knowing its life depends on me. I do have a boyfriend that I keep around and he seems to like me, so it’s not like I’m some hermit recluse that’s afraid of getting attached to things. How do you unwind and have fun? To unwind, I play a lot of video games and watch a lot of football. I’m a season ticket holder for the Bills, and pretty much my favorite thing ever
is going to games on Sunday mornings. Some people go to church on Sundays, I go to the Ralph. I’m also kind of a nerd in that I watch a lot of science-based television. I can spend entire days watching The Discovery Chan-nel or The History Channel. Ask me about the Harpy eagle sometime. What have you seen as the biggest change(s) at Evergreen while you’ve worked here? The biggest changes I’ve seen since I’ve been here is the growth. I gave a tour to 14 people at orientation the oth-er day. 14 people!! And we provide exceptional services and programming, so it ills my heart with happiness knowing that we’re expanding our reach in the communities where we live, work, and play. Good guys don’t always inish last. What entails your job at Evergreen? What keeps you interested/motivated in your position? I really do enjoy my job as the Director of Research & Business Development. We have so many irons in the ire as we grow, and each one is different with its own require-ments. It might be the OASAS application one day, developing and writing a grant the next, or coordinating with a researcher looking for data. The variety of projects really is engaging and keeps me on my toes. Where do you see yourself in ive years? Five years from now I hope to be gearing up for another Bills season that takes place right here in western New York. And I see myself still here at Evergreen, help-ing us to take over the world. Maybe by then
I’ll have graduated from a sick plant in my of-ice, to perhaps a hermit crab. What would be
your dream life? My dream life involves being in a dark, air-conditioned room, where I can play video games and watch Mythbusters and football all day long. My partner Joey would be there serving me stuffed crust pizza and pea-nut M&Ms. There would also be a fully stocked bourbon bar with ice. What is/are your pet peeves? My biggest pet peeve is when you call someone and they don’t answer, but then they text you. Unless you’re meeting with the president or at a movie, you should just return the call!! If I call you and you respond with a text message asking “what’s up”, there’s a good chance I just blew a gasket and my head ex-ploded. And stop leaving voicemails – I get it, you called, I can see that. I’m not interested in hearing your voicemail, which is why I usually delete it and just call you back. No one has the time or patience for voicemails today. Boxers, briefs or commando? I wear boxer briefs. I stopped wearing briefs when I was like 4 and outgrew the ones with ninja turtles on them. I ind that boxer briefs give me all the support
in all the right areas… and who answers “com-mando”?! What kind of barbarian is traipsing around these parts with everything just lap-ping in the breeze? In my opinion, if you can’t wear open-toed shoes to work, you certainly can’t be gallivanting around without any un-derwear on.
