Dear Friends It might surprise you to know that, from my experience, one of the most controversial topics that I can preach on is the subject of REST. It is a significant theme that runs throughout the bible. It begins at the begin-ning, with God resting on the seventh day of creation which is the model for our Sabbath break from the working week. The rest was not just limited to humanity but applied to animals and the land as well. Of course, somewhat ironically what was meant to provide us with freedom and recovery was often used by the more overzealous amongst us to restrict, simply adding to our burdens. And so, it is with some relief that we find Jesus declaring himself the ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ in the New Testament and reclaiming the Sabbath as being for our benefit and fulfilment. A principle that Christ often mod-elled by taking himself and his followers away from the busi-ness of work to pray, recharge and rest. I could go on about the importance of rest throughout scripture (I do like to go on) but it is clearly an important and necessary part of being hu-man and part of God’s design for us. And yet, every time I preach on rest, I know that I am guaran-teed to get (at least) a few people complaining about it. “I’d be so bored.” “There is so much to do” “So many people need our help.” And even those who are sympathetic to the theory often express difficulty with the practise, “When could I get a chance to rest?” “How would I rest?” The time and culture that we live in does not lend itself easily to rest. I think that is par-ticularly true in a place like St Alban’s. We must always be producing, always doing, always achieving, always moving, always consuming etc., etc. In modern day Britain doing, earn-ing, achieving is how we find and maintain our value, identity and worth. To rest is to put this all at risk and so we are out of practise when those fleeting moments come along.

The one exception to our general hectic pace seems to be the month of August. In August we slow down. We take a holiday. The schools are closed. The office is half-full. The sun is shining (we hope) and we spend some time with the family. The issue is we are so out of practise at resting that even then we have to fill our diaries with activities and trips and jobs that need doing. These can be restful, but more often than not our urgency for them is a need for distraction. This came home to me last sum-mer when I discovered that the time it took me to go from 60 to 0 on holiday was nine days. It was nine days in before I started to slow down, relax, and feel like I didn’t need to achieve some-thing. Physician heal thyself I hear thee say. I hope that you all enjoy a restful August. Find something that recharges you. Do some exercise. Visit the sea. Pick up a book. Spend some time in prayer and meditation. Visit a friend you haven’t seen in ages. Take some time to realise that you are valued and loved by those around you and by God for who you are and not just what you do. Find your Sabbath and allow your-self to enjoy it. But better than just doing it in August, find a way to build it into your life in the year to come. For, ironic as it sounds, resting requires practise and discipline but it is part of who we were designed to be and necessary for us to truly live.

Best wishes

A brief update on a number of items that might be of interest to the congregation and the wider readership of the magazine. Bible Study – What is the Bible? We will be meeting for Bible Study on 9th July at 10.30am in Cross Street. This is the final of three sessions on the nature of

the Bible and this month we will be looking at how the Bible has and is interpreted. There will be no Bible Study group meeting in August. FRIDAY BIBLE STUDY

The Friday Bible Study has stopped for the summer and its future is under review after low attendance for most of the year. Watch for details about decisions for the coming term in the Notices and the September issue of the maga-zine.. Ewen Gilhespy

The Bible

As Christians, we have the Spirit of God in us, but … we have the responsibility to keep sin out of our lives so that the Spirit can produce His fruit in us. Become grounded in the Bible. As Christians, we have only one authority, one compass: the Word of God. Abraham Lincoln wrote, “I am profitably engaged in reading the Bible. Take all that you can of this Book upon reason, and the balance upon faith. You will live and die a better man.” Søren Kierkegaard wrote, “The Bible is very easy to under-stand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly.”

John Wesley: “I want to know one thing, the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has conde-scended to teach the way; for this very end he came from heav-en. He has written it down in a book! Oh, give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be: “a man of one book.” Billy Graham: “Begin the day with the Book; and as the day comes to a close, let the Word speak its wisdom to your soul. Let it be the firm foundation upon which your hope is built. Let it be the Staff of Life upon which your spirit is nourhed. Let it be the Sword of the Spirit which cuts away the evil of your life and fashions you in His image and likeness. Let it be the Sword of the Spirit which cuts away the evil of your life and fashions you in His image and likeness. A Prayer: Almighty God, Your Word nourishes my whole being and I praise Your holy name! Ewen Gilhespy (Bible reading notes Co-ordinator)

“Beacons of Hope”

This is the title of Baptists Together Annual Review for 2018. A new initiative for 2019, it explains the varied work Baptists Together have been part of over the past year and it is hoped that it will encourage us by demonstrating the varied work that God is doing across our Baptist movement. It includes Objectives and Activities, Associa-tion stories, National Work, a Financial Review and infor-mation about Who Baptists Together are. Copies are freely available in the Cross Street Centre and on the desk in the vestibule, so if you think you know eve-rything there is to know about GB Baptists, read the re-view and you might be surprised! HOSPITAL AND CLINIC APPOINTMENTS

UPDATE! Sometimes members of our fellowship need help with transport to get to hospital or clinic appoint-ments.

We were hoping to put together a list of names of people willing to help on occasions. So far there has been little response to the above need. However—the St Albans Good Neighbour Scheme (SAGNS) is a voluntary organisation where volunteers of-fer various forms of help within the locality. With regard to transport needs the scheme tries to link re-quests for lifts with one of their volunteer drivers who use their own cars. The suggest a ‘voluntary’ contribution of 40-50p per mile towards fuel costs. Further information is on their website www.sagns.org. The phone number for SAGNS is 01727 830713. I also have some leaflets about SAGNS. Jill Potter 01727 872206 [email protected]

IN CHRIST ALONE my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground.

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! - who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied - For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am His and He is mine - Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guild in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can every pluck me from His hand;

Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Mission News

News from our BMS Church Partners, Toby and Pippa Vokuhl: As I, Toby, am writing this, we are only days away from travelling back home, having spent the last 16 months in Nepal and now preparing for two months back in the UK, and one month in Ger-many. The transition phase has definitely begun. Children are slightly on edge, and admittedly so are we adults. Suitcases are partially packed. Our thoughts jump between past, present, and immediate future. Whilst we are looking forward to a proper stock-take when back in the UK, here are a few current reflec-tions. Few construction projects in the West are delivered on time, and maybe even fewer in Nepal. I was very much hoping that I would see the completion of the current project I am managing before returning to the UK for the summer. It turns out that a combination of required design changes and contractor delay will prevent this. My focus during the last month has therefore been to provide my Nepali engineering colleague with all the tools he needs to successfully manage the project through the rest of the construction phase, and I am pleased that I took the time to set out fairly detailed procedures and processes from the start. Having deliberately stepped back a little and let Binaya take the lead in meetings and decision making processes, I be-lieve, has actually been a good thing. I have seen him rise to the challenge, and I hope that this opportunity to take the lead is transformational for him. Looking ahead, the vision for the INF engineering team is very much that of collaboration between ex-pat and Nepali staff, enabling knowledge exchange, and ulti-mately a team where expats are not really required. In the meantime however, we do have a role and are valued. I very much look forward to seeing this building completed, as I know that so many people will be blessed by this physical structure in the future. Not only will patients receive counselling and prayer

under this roof, but the 100-seater auditorium will be a great space for worship, church services, official functions and lectures. God's timing for our arrival here has been perfect and I am pleased to have invested my energies into making this a reality. As alluded to above, we have definitely entered a transition phase in the lead up to spending the summer in the UK and Ger-many. As far as Jakey, Ella, and Millie's schooling is concerned we feel that they are in a good place and benefitting from the teaching style in the small mission school here. We are very grateful for the teachers, but visa issues are causing a significant amount of stress for Libby, the principal, and key teachers. Please pray urgently for teachers Chris and Shane, as Visa is-sues have already forced Chris to temporarily leave the country, and Shane and family may have to leave mid-June if their visa does not come through. Do pray for God's moving and his sover-eignty in this. As our children will be missing out on six weeks of schooling we will have to do some home schooling with them over the summer. We are also planning two weeks of intensive German lessons for them in August, when we will be staying near German relatives. Those of you who follow our blog may have read Pippa's recent two entries about her input supporting INF's therapy work in Surk-het in the Midwest of Nepal. The blog posts are available to read on the BMS website, or you can sign up at 'www.annapurna-murmur.com' to receive updates directly into your email inbox. Part of Pippa's role recently has been to support and mentor a Nepali Physiotherapist who is heading up the INF therapy work in Surkhet. minds us once again of the level of privilege enjoyed by those of us who live in developed countries, not least in our access to qual-ity health care. Many Surkhet hospital patients are months or years postinjury, resulting in entirely preventable suffering from complications like pressure sores, lack of mobility, and a resulting exclusion from meaningful roles in communities and families. Do pray for INF services in the region, and that God would raise up more high-quality health workers, prepared to live in the more challenging parts of Nepal, like the Midwest and West. As we ourselves are departing from Nepal for home leave we would appreciate your prayers for us as a family. Deputation work is new to us, and we need to find our own way, as we travel around, meet friends old and new, and try to fit in home schooling in between. It will undoubtedly be a wonderful time of re-connecting and sharing, but for the kids particularly we expect mixed emotions, as they leave one 'home' and set routines, to go to a variety of other 'homes' with very few routines. We leave Ne-pal with the confidence that this has been the right place for us for last 16 months, and that by God's grace we have started to con-tribute to meeting local needs. We also feel that it is right for us to return to continue the work here after the summer. Your partnership with us in this vision has been invaluable and has been a constant source of encouragement to us. We are look-ing forward to seeing many of you during our time in the UK, and are particularly excited to be meeting some wonderful new sup-porting churches. Toby & Pippa

Visit by our BMS Church Partners Toby & Pippa Vokuhl

Please save the date and time:- Tuesday 9th July, 6pm in the Cross Street Centre. A reminder that Toby & Pippa and their three children, Jakey, Ella and Millie will be coming to visit us whilst on home leave on Tues-day 9th July, at 6pm. The event will take the form of a welcome evening for them in the Centre where there will be food and an opportunity to get to know them as we learn something of how they became BMS missionar-ies and their background. Please book the date so that we can give our new Mission Part-ners a very warm DSBC welcome. It would help with catering if you could add your name to the sign-up sheet in the link so we can be sure we have enough food.

Recently we received a letter from Lisa Carr who runs the Genesis Community Shop in Sheffield, where, for the past 28 years we have been supporting them with contributions of clothing and household items. She writes: “Dear Chris and All, I would like to thank you for yet another kind do-nation to the Genesis Community Shop and thank the fabulous driver; it was lovely to see you. Thank you to everyone who donated tools and equip-ment for our recent TWAM collection. Slightly down in quantity compared with 2018, we nevertheless were able to load a worthwhile collection of quality tools and equipment into the TWAM van the day after the collec-tion! We are fortunate in having space to organise these collections and are especially grateful for dona-tions from the wider community including other City Centre churches. TWAM currently sends over 20 shipping containers overseas each year to try to match a clear and increas-ing demand for tool kits and equipment. The stories published in TWAM News are inspiring and recently, TWAM CEO Mike Griffin wrote about “Dreams” follow-ing a recent visit to Zambia:

“Livingstone, the tourist capital of Zambia, is a strange place. On the one hand it boasts some of the most ex-pensive and exclusive hotels in the country, and on the other there is desperation and poverty as locals dream of what might have been as the tourist coaches drive by of-fering no benefit to a struggling local economy. To try to address this conflict, Pastor John Banda of Calvary Chapel started the Dream Centre, where men and wom-en are trained in tailoring, knitting, computing, plumbing, and carpentry. The Centre has been completely equipped with TWAM tools, and as a result many “Dreams” are being fulfilled and lives transformed.” The story is inspiring and can be read in full in the sum-mer edition of TWAM news. Copies are in the carousel or can be found at [email protected]

Operation Agri is a volunteer led charity supporting over-seas Christian partners, who understand the needs in their communities. They bring self-respect and new hope to some of the world’s poorest families, showing them Chris-tian love and care. They support sustainable development work such as agricultural centres to assist farmers, and irri-gation schemes for rural communities. OA also supports projects that bring lasting improvement to people’s lives, such as basic health clinics, and women’s empowerment groups in urban slums. With strong links to Baptist Church-es in UK, DSBC last supported their annual appeal in 2013, and copies of their quarterly bulletin, “Outreach Abroad” can be found in the carousel in Cross Street.

This year our Harvest Appeal will support Operation Agri’s “Learning for Life in Nepal” appeal, which is expressing Christian Love in Action by supporting locally run projects in earthquake-torn remote mountain communities of Nepal, by helping people to grow crops, keep healthy, educate their children, and improve

Heritage Open Days Sat. 14th – Sun. 15th September 2019

We have once again registered DSBC for Heritage Open Days 2019 when the Church will be open for visitors on Saturday 14th September from 10am – 6pm and Sunday 15th September from 1 – 5pm. If you are able to help as a volunteer steward, say for a 2 hour stint or more, please have a word with me. We will need a minimum of 2 stewards at any time but more would be helpful, so please consider if you could offer to help. On Sunday 15th, Churches Together in St Albans Prayer Walkers will be visiting us at 3.30pm, when they will call in for a short prayer session. HOD’s is a great opportunity to welcome new people to the church and to show them around; in the past, inter-esting and fascinating contacts have been made. Estab-lished in 1994 as England's contribution to the European Heritage Days, HOD’s has since grown into the country's largest heritage festival from 701 events at its launch to over 5,000 today. This year’s festival runs from 13th – 22nd September, and events can be found on the HOD website: www.heritageopendays.org.uk and in a local di-rectory.

Church in the Café These first Sunday afternoon tea events have proved pop-ular and have enabled us to learn more about some of the charities and organisations

we support through planned mission giving, and about topical issues. In May we welcomed Chris Birch-Evans, who heads up STEP, the local Christian Education project who work in most of the district’s secondary schools. In June we heard about The Church and Climate Change from Revd. Dr. David Gregory, former BT pres-ident and senior minister at Croxley Green BC. In July, Helen Gray, director of the Hertfordshire Com-munity Foundation, will be talking about the foundation and St Albans Fund for the Future, which John Peters launched in 2001 when he was mayor of St Albans. More details of this event, which will include a special visit by the St Albans Teddy Bear, can be found else-where in the magazine!

DSBC Archive update 1

A church such as ours has many years of history and we can all play a part in remembering and preserving our history for future members and the wider community. At the start of this year I took over from Brian Branch as the offi-cial Archivist. I would like to thank Brian for leaving the archive collection ac-cessible and catalogued in good order. I see my role, in taking over, to rationalise and keep the ever-growing material to be preserved for the future. I proposed a plan to bring as much of the collection together as possible, and with the approval of the Deacons I identified some storage space and started to make adjustments to try to bring the archive material together in one place rather than spread around the Church in various locations. The space identified was in the Choir Vestry next to the Flower Room and to date I have rearranged the room to make better use of the storage space within and assembled the majority of the archive collection material to be kept there. My next job is to start looking at the contents of the archive and seeing if it can be rationalised to facilitate the storage of the ev-er-increasing supply of material. To this end I would like to invite anyone who may have material associated with the work of the Church, that is suitable for ar-chiving, to arrange with me for it to be added to the collection. We will need further development to keep future archives digital-ly, rather than as hard copy, and also digitalise existing items to cut down on the storage space required to keep them, and at the same time making them more accessible.

I realise the Archive Collection will always be an ongoing project but with your help a much wider spectrum of the Church life can be recorded. You may notice that I am taking photos for the record but as I am not able to attend every event in the Church life I would welcome any photos you may have (please include event details, date and names of people in shot, if possible) As photos can be quite large files please send them on a USB/pen drive/memory stick/SD card etc, that I can transfer to the archive store and return to you (please attach your name/details). I can scan hard copies of photos up to A4 size but the quality is not usually as good as the original digital copy.

Another part of my role is to collate past copies of the Church mag-azine and need to track down a back copy from May 2010. If you have a copy please let me know so I can complete the set for bind-ing.

Thank you for your help with the above. The Church has a land-mark anniversary next year and any fresh material/photos will be gratefully received! I would welcome any comment/suggestions about the future of the archive and look forward to preserving our history.

PASTORAL NEWS We remember the following from our church family that would value our prayers at this time: Denis and Marie Rowson, Jennie Johnson, Krisztina Schreiner & Kay Skelton Let us give thanks for all that God provides for us and take time every day to pray for those that are unwell or coping with the loss of loved ones. In the busy time of summer holidays, come rain or sunshine, may we all find time to rest and be close to God. ‘Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.’ 1 Peter 5 v 7

You are here You silence all my fear

Bless unto me this holiday.

From these wide seas give unto me A larger heart of charity.

May these strong tides wash out my mind

From all that’s bitter and unkind.

With the broad beat of a seabird’s wings Lift my soul to heavenly things.

By the far sights of hills untrod

Call me to undared ventures, God.

Grant that these holidays maybe Your holy days indeed to me.

We were in the top 40 out of 900 churches! So a big well done and thank you to all of you who share in this ministry! Cause for celebration! More next month. Linda Williams

THANK YOU

FROM TIM ALLEN

It was wonderful for us both to be back in St Albans and a great honour to be invited to perform in the Abbey. It is a building

that, together with DSBC, formed me as a musician and a person. To be able to play for Christine's singing and to introduce our daughter, Cecilia, to the Cathe-dral was exciting.

We were very moved by the many familiar faces from Dagnall Street who showed up. Those of you who knew me as a callow youth with long hair, skinny legs and twenty twenty vision were no doubt surprised that I was a little different but I was able to recognise al-most everybody and remember names! Thank you for coming to say hello and recall good times.

We are now back in Little Rock where I am Organist at St Mark's Episcopal Church, a 1400 member church on a 12 acre campus. Christine is a busy performing artist and teacher and Cecilia is a typical American 10 year old. We have made several recordings which are available on iTunes, Amazon and all the major online platforms. I hope that next time we visit we can make it into Dagnall Street!

BUCKINGHAM PALACE GARDEN PARTY

When I was nominated through work to attend a Royal Gar-den Party at Buckingham Palace in May I could hardly be-lieve it and was absolutely delighted. I treated myself to a new hat from John Lewis (promptly named “Hattie”). Be-cause of her shape she came in a box nearly two feet long. I thought she looked very grand. I attended with a work col-league who was celebrating his 60th birthday on the same day. About 8000 people attended the party so there were lots of people to meet. As we approached the Palace we gradually saw more and more people in summer suits and hats all walking in the same direction. The queue to get in was very long but once inside the grounds were wonderful. There was a huge lawn and the terrace and two proficient bands—in our case the Scots Guards and the Parachute regiment—who played al-ternate selections of light classics. There were lots of mili-tary and security personnel but it was as unobtrusive as pos-sible. We visited the tea tent on several occasions during the afternoon and enjoyed the special garden party tea and

finger sandwiches and little cakes. They also had iced coffee and apple juice (but not in the same glass!) We headed in the direction of the terrace shortly before the Royal Family were due to appear although we were some way back in the crowd on the lawn. We were still able to get some good photos with a zoom lens. We sang the National Anthem as the Band played and this was a special moment for me as the Queen was actually present. We didn’t meet the Queen and the other Royals (Duke and Duchess of Cam-bridge and Prince Andrew) but we listened to the bands for a while. We then went for a walk around the lake and through the beautiful gardens, including all the shrubs, azaleas and rhododendrons. A highlight for me was seeing the finger sandwiches and little cakes. The vase was hewn from a single block of Carrara marble, which was origi-nally admired and reserved by a confident Napoleon in readi-ness to commemorate his expected victories. Following his fall after the Napoleonic wars, the vase was presented to the future George IV, and it was embellished with depictions of the Battle of Waterloo.

It was then time to return to the lawn and we chatted to a few more people before the Queen left her tea tent. I caught a glimpse of her as she walked back towards the Palace. Then there was just time for some more refreshments and a sit down in the chairs on the lawn. The bands played the National An-them again at 6pm and we all headed home through the ground floor of the Palace and out through the main entrance and back into the world again. It was a wonderful experience and a great day which I will always remember! Megan Thompson

COPY DATE FOR THE SEPTEMBER MAGAZINE

THURSDAY, 15th AUGUST

June was a bit of a whirlwind for me. I returned from my visit to Dick and Laura in Texas to preparing for the visit of my Austral-ian family, my son, his wife and my grandsons Freddie and Charlie. It was my first encounter with my new grandson, Charlie. What a big lad he is for 5 months. Freddie I nicknamed the ’Hurricane’ as he did everything at 90 miles an hour! We all had a great time visiting friends and family. We even managed to get to Hatfield for Noreen and Ewen’s celebration for the birth of the Church, and we had a few great days out visiting Standalone Farm and the Lavender fields. I had planned a visit to London to the Natural History Museum as Freddie is really into dinosaurs, but we ran out of time. I spent the first couple of days after their visit putting my house back together—I haven’t caught up with all the washing yet! They are now in Thailand celebrating Tom’s, my son, 40th birthday. I have facetimed with them and they are having a great time and the place they are staying in looks beautiful. Looking forward to the next time (I think!!). Happy holidays everyone!
