The Learning Center for Families

July-August 2011

In June, the TLC Board of Directors selected from among many applications,

the winners to forward to the Utah Head Start Association for their

Parent, Staff and Community awards.

Beating the Odds honors that parent who has overcome great challenges in their

life. Desiree Ashley is our winner. Last month she graduated from high school

despite many setbacks in her life. We are so proud of Desiree!

Educator of the Year pays tribute to the an Early Head Start teacher who has

gone the extra mile. Loralee Candland, who has only worked at TLC for two

years, won this prestigious award.

Family Service Worker of the Year is a Head Start award that pays tribute to

those who do service coordination for the family. This year, Kris Evans, from our

Colorado City site, won in this category.

Father of the Year spotlights how important Dads are in the lives of their

children. David Pickett, father of three and President of our Policy Council, took

the honors.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. David’s daughter, McKenzie Pickett,

won Lil’ Charmer. This award spotlights what is special about our children.

With so many deserving parents, the Parent of the Year award is very

competitive. But our standout winner was Charlyse Hammon.

Humanitarian of the Year spotlights our partnerships in the community. Many

of you have taken advantage of the free dental services offered by the Dixie

State College Dental Hygiene program. Veronica Fely, the program coordinator,

won the award. She and Kris Evans also won at the state level and they will be

honored at the state conference October 14th at the South Towne Expo.

Bug Bites. Although some bites are fairly harmless- if not annoying- others can be quite painful and/or dangerous. Be extra vigilant about your little one. Even though it's hot, keeping your tot loosely covered with longer sleeves, long pants and socks will keep the bugs off and can prevent them from snacking on your child.

UV rays. Summer time is sunburn time. Be sure to dot on lots of sunscreen. Don't forget the tops of your child's ears and the back of his/her neck.

Baby's eyes. If you will be out a long period of time or in the water, sunglasses and a hat are good for protecting baby's eyes. Early and frequent exposure to the sun can cause early cataract development.

The car. Watch out! That car seat may be hot! Buckling your little one in, even after a short trip to the store can be real tricky. The metal on the buckle heats up very quickly and can cause a serious burn if it touches your child's skin. Also- it's a no brainer folks- DO NOT leave your child alone in the car while you hop out "just for a second". Not even with the car's air conditioning running. You never know what can happen in just that little bit of time.

With just a bit of extra care, you and your youngster will both enjoy all the fun that summer brings!

Meet John and Ginger West. The Wests just returned from an all expense paid trip to Washington ,

DC where they were the guests of the Early Head Start National Resource Center flown in to address the

over 3,000 attendees at their recent Birth to Three Institute. John and Ginger were selected as one of

three families from amongst the over 140,000 families who are enrolled in EHS programs in the 50 United

States as well as US Territories.

John and Ginger were asked to share their story because EHS-NRC believes it exemplifies the

power of Early Head Start to connect families with resources that continue to improve their lives long

after their enrollment in EHS. Their story also highlights the remarkable journey the Wests have made

from enrollment to transition.

The Wests brought the crowd to tears recounting their challenges and hardships when their first

child was born with Down syndrome. Ginger told how one night she was consumed with darkness and

texted her Learning Consultant, Heidi Cooper, at 2:00 am. “She

texted right back! Who does that?” she asked the crowd as tears

streamed down her face, “My hat goes off to all of you who do this

work. You have no idea the impact it makes”.

The Wests received a 5 minute standing ovation for their

remarkable story of how they overcame many obstacles in their

journey to self sufficiency. Way to go!

Ginger John
