At a recent meeng, the Dance Ontario Commissioning Commiee ( Jesse Dell, Tina Nicolaidis, Lola Ryan, Ofilio Sinbadinho, Jennifer Watkins) selected Riley Sims and Shameka Blake to present new works at DanceWeekend’18. Shameka Blake, a graduate of George Brown College, will create Child Sol- dier, a work set in a small remote village in Kenya, where a guerilla unit violently kidnaps a child; destroying his home and killing his family. As he is groomed into the life of a child soldier, he resists conforming to this foreign culture of brutality. Ulmately his fight is in vain and he joins the ranks as yet another child soldier. In collaboraon wih Krump choreographer and dancer Amadeus “Primal” Marquez, award winning dancer/choreographer Shameka will bring an urban take on a serious polical issue. Riley Sims of Social Growl Dance will present Old New Borrowed Blue, a visceral, eccentric, animalisc and emoonally srring contemporary dance piece, performed by four female dancers: Clarke Blair, Wing Sheung Chan, Ana Groppler and Jolyane Langlois. A graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and recipient of SummerWorks’ Risk and Innovaon Award, Riley is Dance Maers’ Residency and Commission Arst of 2016-17.
