I am very grateful to everyone who has helped Artown blossom over the last 20 years. The Artown Board is committed to providing our community with an arts festival that is vibrant, eclectic and thought provoking. We have enhanced our website and a simple downloadable mobile version. When reading this Little Book, you will be amazed by the abundant artistic offerings this July.

We continue to strengthen our relationship with our funders, artists, audience members and venues and we also find new partners who believe in community and the power of the arts. This year we collaborate with the Reno Aces. On July 16 all the Aces players will wear Artown jerseys during Aces in the Arts. The jerseys will be sold to attendees during the game. We will also have 10 plein air painters around the field painting the game. Please come out and join us at Greater Nevada Field.

For the first time in Wingfield Park, the Reno Philharmonic will perform a free patriotic performance on July 4th followed by fireworks as we celebrate America’s Birthday.

We asked our patrons if they like to invest in Artown through small donations which helps keep the experience free. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and this year we have added a texting donation option to our Keep Artown Free campaign.

I’d like to take a moment to recognize two tremendous members of the Artown family who passed away last year. Tim Jones, an Artown, Movies in the Park and Discover the Arts founder passed away suddenly. We are very thankful for all he did for the arts. He will be recognized on July 1 before Movies in the Park. Bill Wallace, Chairman of the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation and Artown advocate also left us too soon. The entire Monday Night Music Series will be dedicated to Bill. These gentlemen were both ever present during the festival and we will miss them in many ways. Our blessings continue to be extended to their families and I know that they will want us all to revel throughout July.

I am very excited to share July with all of you. I hope to meet you, in person, at Artown,

Letter from the

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Artown selected Michelle Lassaline as the 2016 Poster artist. Her visual concept will represent the July 2016 Festival and the non-profit’s twenty-first year. In November, following a call to artists, a panel of art professionals reviewed a total of 32 submissions, finding Lassaline’s proposal fanciful and reflective of Reno’s emerging culture; the 2016 poster will emphasize and portray animals native to the Reno area personified in artistic movements.

Lassaline is a fourth generation Nevadan and a graduate of University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis in painting and performance, and a minor in Art History in spring of 2014. Many of Lassaline’s creations draw from her memories and experiences in Nevada landscape and culture. She says, “The concept [for the 2016 Poster] was inspired by my project for Artown’s 20th Anniversary in 2015, in which I performed weekly as “Coyote,” drawing portraits of the public as their favorite animals. This year’s poster art shows Coyote marching with her fellow Nevadan animals in a festive parade that celebrates the performing and visual arts that thrive in our community.”

For two decades, Artown has invited audiences to embrace multidisciplinary arts by recognizing and promoting artists who excel in their craft. Executive Director of Artown, Beth Macmillan, says, “This is a pinnacle time for Michelle. She has decided to pursue art as a full-time career and has received great exposure from numerous organizations. We commissioned her last year for her mask performance art at

Wingfield Park; she has been featured at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada Museum of Art, The Holland Project, Sierra Arts Foundation, Oats Park Art Center in Fallon, and many others. We are eager to highlight her talent as an icon for the 2016 Festival.”

You can experience Michelle’s work this July at Sierra Arts Gallery on July 7th; children ages 6 – 12 will be mesmerized by her characters on July 12 at McKinley Arts and Culture Center during Discover the Arts.
