T HE J IB S HEET MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER www.sailingcenter.org JULY 2009 VOLUME 12, NUMBER 4 S omethings you can always count on to mark a traditional Milwaukee Community Sailing Center (MCSC) summer and that includes the annual events such as the Full Moon Sails, Quarterbarrel Regatta, Volunteer Instructor Appreciation Night, Lobster Boil AND classes throughout the season. This summer is no different. Sailing Center members can look forward to each of these events. Full Moon Sail. Thursday, August 6. Dinner 6 p.m. Boats are boarded by 7. Under the light of a full moon, a limited number of MCSC members and guests will be treated to an evening sail. Sign up now. Space is limited. Potluck supper before the sail; everyone brings a dish to pass. Quarterbarrel Regatta. Sunday, August 9. MCSC regattas are always casual, friendly and fun, but can get competitive as well with full Ensign, 470 and Handicapped PHRF fleets including Soling and J24s. The 26th Annual Quarterbarrel starts with a 9:30 a.m. skippers’ meeting. The Quarterbarrel is MCSC’s Race of the Year! Any heavy air rated skipper may sign out Sailing Center boats on a first-paid, first-reserved bases. There will be separate Ensign, 470 and PHRF starts. Entry fee is only $20 in advance, and $25 the day of the race, so sign up early. This is the race to the infamous green bell buoy -- more than 10 miles from “home.” Trophies will be awarded to each division with at least four boats entered prior to August 5. Show your stuff at this fun race and earn the right to add your name to the trophy and ring the bell! Call today. Volunteer Instructor Appreciation Night. Thursday, August 27. 6 p.m. This event honors the backbone of MCSC programs -- the volunteer instructors. Free eats, gifts and recognition. All new members are also encouraged to attend. Each new member and volunteer may bring a guest. Reserve your space today. The Grandmama of all MCSC Special Events -- The Annual Lobster Boil is set for Friday, August 28. (The date breaks with tradition and will be the weekend BEFORE Labor Day this year.) Because of the ongoing construction, space for the Lobster Boil is very limited this year. Please make your reservations early! Just 300 reservations are available. Date : Friday, August 28. Time : 6 - 9:30 p.m. Passed hors d’oeuvres served from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Details: Lobster caught off the coast of Maine in the morning and in our pots in the evening. All the trimmings -- potatoes, corn, drawn butter. Wine and beer available for purchase. Cost : $65 per person - table of 10 $600 (All 10 reservations must be made and paid for at one time to qualify for table discount). BUY YOUR RAFFLE TICKET FOR GREAT PRIZES. Each year the Lobster Boil Raffle gives you a chance to win great prizes. This year tickets are $5 a piece, or five tickets for $20. A custom designed yard sculpture -- perfect for sailors is first prize, second prize--two tickets to the Sailors Ball and the third prize is a custom designed basket of goodies.
