Sunday Mornings
“WHEN GOD WANTS YOU TO GO WHERE YOU DON’T WANT TO GO: A STUDY OF JONAH”
For this series, we turn to one of the shortest books in the Bible, Jonah. Jonah is a minor prophet in the Old Testament and his story is taught to us from our earliest days of Sunday School. Many of us might remember that Jonah was swallowed by a great fish and, in a round about way, ends up in Nineveh. So despite his best effort to the contrary, he ends up exactly where God wanted him to go.
How often in life do we have that same kind of experience? As individuals, we run away from God. As churches, we can go in the opposite direction God wants us to go. Time and time again, we discover (sometimes painfully) that we cannot run from God. No matter how far we might go, God’s love and call can find us in any geographical location and in any stage of life. Through this series, we will explore some valuable lessons from the book of Jonah that we can apply to our own lives, church, and community.
July 10 — “Running Away From the Lord” Jonah 1:1-10 & Matthew 28:16-20
July 17 — “Fearing the Lord” Jonah 1:11-17 & Philippians 2: 12-18
July 24 — “Thanking the Lord No Matter What” Jonah 2:1-10 & Philippians 4:4-7
July 31 — “The Blessings From Obedience”Jonah 3:1-10 & Romans 16:17-19
August 7 — “Pouting For the Lord”Jonah 4:1-11 & Philippians 1:27-30

At the May Session meeting, the leadership of the church approved a motion for us to enter into an Assessment and Visioning process withTAG Consulting (www.transformingchurch.net). TAG was recommended to us by Dr. Jim Singleton as his church, First Presbyterian of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is working with TAG and having good results. TAG is also endorsed by Presbyterians For Renewal, one of the renewal groups within the denomination we support.
The reason for entering into this process is two-fold. First, the assessment phase will allow us to accurately gauge the health of our congregation based on over 10,000 assessments TAG has done with churches. The second phase will allow us to launch into strategic planning born from a unified and understood vision. The whole process will take up to and possibly beyond a year. Essentially, we will discover who we are, who God is calling us to be in this Yakima Valley, and how to get from one to the other!
The assessment phase will begin in the month of July with the Transforming Church Index (TCIndex). The TCIndex is an online tool our church is using to gather input from our members and attendees on a variety of topics including: Communication, Outreach, Member Satisfaction, Financial Matters, Children’s and Youth Ministries, and others. Your involvement in this online survey is very important. Please
Instructions on taking the surveyAvailable July10, 2011 to August 15, 2011
1. Log on to the website at http://tagsurvey.org/tci/grid2. Click on the link to your church’s survey: First Presbyterian Church 3. Enter your church’s Password: fpc0711 This password is the same for everyone in your church. Once the survey period has been completed, the password will be changed and you will not be able to log on.4. Answer each question according to the instructions. When you have finished each set of questions, click “Next” at the bottom of the page. You may use the “Previous” and “Next” buttons to navigate pages and change your answers at any point while you are logged on. When you click “Finish” on the last page, your answers will be saved and you cannot change them.5. Each member of a family over the age of 15 should participate individually.
take time between July 10, 2011 and August 15, 2011 to take the survey. You can take it online by following the instructions below; or, if you’d prefer, you can fill out a paper survey by picking one up at the Connection Center and returning it to the church office in a sealed envelope no later than August 1, 2011. Our preference is that members make every effort to participate online. If you don’t have access to a computer, please call the office to schedule time to use one at the church 248-7940. The computers will be available Monday – Thursday and on Sunday.
After the TCIndex is completed on August 15th, we will enter into the next phase which will entail the facilitators of TAG meeting with Focus Groups within the church in an effort to gather further information.
I am greatly excited about this process and we need your input. If you have any questions please call me at 248-7940. May God bless all of us as we discover and discern together!

great, our digestive systems may behave less capriciously on ‘home cooking.’ While we love those holidays, most folks agree that ‘there’s no place like home.’
However you decide to spend your holiday this year, remember that God is with you always and everywhere. Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us that He takes time off to enjoy His time-share and leaves us to fend for ourselves while He is gone. Isn’t it comforting to know that God has not hung a Gone Fishin’ sign on His door? When we go to Him in prayer, we will not hear the message, “I’m sorry, I’m not available right now. Your prayer is very important to me. Just leave a message and I will respond as quickly as I can.” Instead, He’ll be with you in the forest, at the beach, in the mountains, and at the fun parks, too. Where you go, He’ll be with you. Though road side insurance is nice to have, you’ve got something even better available. Twenty-four hour protection, seven days a week, three hundred sixty five days a year. He’s always there for you. Have a happy summer and know that God loves you and is with you always.

Summer Holidays
Those two little words evoke all kinds of images and feelings. Restful forests, beautiful beaches, glorious mountains, and exciting fun parks--- to name a few. Sometimes the words mean that we can have extended visits with family members and friends who live at a distance. While planning our vacations, we look forward to being away from all that is familiar and indulging in activities that are new and unique. Briefly dropping our everyday responsibilities and changing our daily routine is a glorious respite. We revel in our new freedoms. We might stay up later than usual. We may sleep in. We might allow ourselves treats we wouldn’t normally eat -- like cotton candy and fudge. The days may seem to pass all too quickly. As the allotted time draws to a close, the stash of bills in our pocket book has dwindled and the charges on our credit cards have increased. We know it’s time to go home again.
As we return to our ‘normal’ lives, we have mixed feelings. Why couldn’t we just live at the beach? But then our next thought is how welcome our own bed will feel. While Mae West might have said that too much of a good thing is absolutely wonderful, that’s not always true. We may find that we are quite ready to resume our familiar routines. Even though those Coney Islands tasted

Many people in our church support Madison House, and what they are doing in the community. There is always a need for more help. Here are some of the ways you
“God works in mysterious ways!” We have all heard it said. Many of us have experienced those “mysterious” ways for ourselves. I know I have! The last three years have been quite a journey for my family, and full of God’s mysteries. The Lord has been preparing me for this calling into ministry. Specifically music ministry.
He was laying the groundwork to bring my family to Yakima and to FPC for some time (a story I am always up for sharing). Truly amazing!
Since I was in junior high, music has been a huge part of my life. I knew that my gifts were from God, and I have always felt a strong desire to use them for His glory. So, I am writing this letter to let you all know how honored and excited I am to be using these gifts as the new Contemporary Worship Director here at First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. The warm reception I have been shown has been amazing! Thank you all for your kind words, and for welcoming me with open arms. Please continue to be in prayer with me as I lead the worship team each week. Music is one of the great gifts God gave for us as a way to worship Him. I consider it a great joy that I get to worship with you all each week. I look forward to many more. I am also excited to see all the great things the Lord will do through His people at First Presbyterian Church of Yakima this year.
Once again, thank you!

No Way! This year kids will keep learning throughout summer with Bamboogie.
Bamboogie is a Sunday school curriculum that will keep the excitement of VBS going for the
remaining weeks of summer! Through Bible heroes such as Daniel and David, kids will learn
about their bodies from God’s perspective–how each body is the temple of God–and apply
what they learn to their everyday lives.
Join us for seven weeks of Bamboogie Summer KidZone from Sunday, July 10 through Sunday,

Dear First Presbyterian ChurchFor the last century the Western Church has implemented an “attractional” strategy. The main question of the “attractional” church model is: How do we get people to come to our church? The unintended consequence of this question is that churches create religious consumers rather than disciples of Jesus. Thankfully we are seeing the Western Church slowly move towards adopting a “missional” strategy. The main question of the “missional” church model is: How do we live out the mission of the church in community? Jesus made it clear to his disciples what the mission of the church was to be: MAKE DISCIPLES (see Matthew 28).
The 5th Act Community is an attempt to make disciples of Jesus by creating communities outside the walls of our church building. The name “5th Act” is based on the metaphor created by Biblical Scholar NT Wright. Wright asks the question, “What would you do if you found the first four acts of a five-act Shakespearean play?” Wright answers his own question by explaining how one would have to go about studying the first four acts of the play extensively in order to create a fifth act. Wright then extends his metaphor by naming and explaining the first four acts of God’s story: 1. Creation 2. Fall 3. Israel and 4. Jesus. Here is where we come in because the fifth act of God’s grand narrative is THE CHURCH. We have been given the task of partnering with God’s Holy Spirit to live out this act in ways that are faithful to the way of Jesus and relevant to our culture.
The strategy of The 5th Act Community is two-fold. ONE: create missional communities, or groups of people who meet outside of the church building in order to live out the life of Jesus together. TWO: invite people to join discipleship groups with the hope that they will learn how to then lead a discipleship group in the future. Both missional communities and discipleship groups are focused on living out intentional relationships because we live in a culture hungry for authenticity and thirsty for deep human connection. Our hope is to address the hunger and thirst of our culture by giving the body and blood of Christ to people in the form of community. We are grateful to be part of the “3DM Network” (check out www.3Dministries.com for info about this group) where we are receiving training for how to do this kind of community development.
If you have questions about this new ministry, or if you are interested in being a part of what we are trying to do, please contact me by emailing [email protected]. I will be leading “The 5th Act Community” as a part time employee of First Pres Yakima (my other part time job will be teaching tennis lessons at the Yakima Tennis Club). Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, your patience, and your financial support. Jessie and I are so grateful for the ways First Presbyterian has shown us what God’s love can look like when lived out in community.
5 Minutes with Jeff Murray our Director of Student Ministries
You’ve now been at FPC as our Student Director for how long?
I’ve been the youth director since January 3rd, but I’ve been involved with the Student Ministries at FPC since 2004.
How have you seen God at work? The Lord has brought kids around who otherwise wouldn’t have a healthy teen group to offer them support. I’ve seen kids grow up in this program and watched God shape them in new and beautiful ways. It’s been inspiring to see what some kids go on to do after high school because they are motivated by their faith.
This past year our elders decided that it was important for our teenagers to worship with the greater
church body. Why do you think it’s important for students to participate in corporate worship?
The goal of Student Ministries is to raise up life-long members of the body of Christ and in order to help them
participate in the greater congregation, they need a lot of exposure to it rather than being isolated in a “students
only” gathering. It’s good for kids to worship with their families and it’s good for kids who come without their
families to be invited into the larger family. When a kid graduates from high school and there is no longer a high
energy/fun option for church, it becomes irrelevant and incompatible with every day life. I believe this is one of
the primary reasons why most kids do not stay involved in the church when they go off to college.
If our students are encouraged to attend one of our worship services, does that mean we are no longer having Sunday School for the students?Absolutely not. Sunday School is at 11:00a for students in 6th-12th grade. It is a time of having discussions, watching engaging videos and studying scripture while asking the question “What does it mean for us to be part of the church?” There will be separate groups for mid high and high school on Sunday morning and if needed, we even provide transportation home (within reason).
If someone didn’t go to the worship service, could they still follow the
Sunday School topic?Yes. Even if we do talks that follow the sermon series, our own study of the
Scripture passage does not fully rely upon the sermon in the main service.
How do your Wednesday gatherings differ from your Sunday gatherings?Wednesday night is a time of forming a community where any student can belong before they believe. Wednesdays are where we focus the high energy, fun time, and inviting our friends. It’s a time where it’s ok to come in and join us even if you’re not a Christian. Sunday morning is more of a time of discipleship. It’s much less of an outreach and more of a time to ask questions about who Jesus is and how we can better follow Him. The hope is that students who become part of
our community on Wednesday nights would eventually feel comfortable joining with their friends on Sunday mornings.
What are you most excited about this next year?
I’m very excited for our spring break mission trip. Keep your eyes open for the details.
LORD, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine. The land You have given
me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance! I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night
my heart instructs me. I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. No
wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts His praises! My body rests in safety. For You will not
leave my soul among the dead or allow Your godly one to rot in the grave. You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever. Psalm 16: 5-11
Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4
The Westminster Confessions and Catechisms asks “What is
the chief end of man?” and answers that man’s high call is to
“glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”
We are good at enjoying things. We enjoy a good cup of
coffee. We enjoy drinking that coffee with friends. We enjoy
good music. We enjoy a beautiful sunny day. We enjoy
the many blessings our God provides. Do we also make a
regular practice of enjoying God Himself? Do we delight
ourselves in the Lord? Do we enjoy reading God’s Word? Do
we enjoy praying? Do we enjoy sharing the love of Christ
with others?
We must discipline ourselves to pursue the enjoyment
of God. Wake up each morning with this goal in mind for
the day . . . decide to enjoy God! Let every good thing we
experience take our thoughts to God. Every good emotion,
every good story we read or hear, every good song, every
good movie; every good thing in our lives should turn us to
our magnificent LORD and King. When we are not enjoying
the love of our Father we become vulnerable to allowing
the pleasures of this world to be triumphant in our lives.
We pursue the enjoyment of God when we:
Seek satisfaction in Him above all else.
I will honor You as long as I live, lifting up my hands to You
in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest of foods. I will
praise You with songs of joy. Psalm 63: 4-5
Maintain a right relationship with Him. We must regularly
repent of sin in our lives and receive the forgiveness of our
Jesus Christ.
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will
be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; You have
broken me -- now let me rejoice. Psalm 51: 7-8
Acknowledge the truth of our adoption into the family of
God.
See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for He allows
us to be called His children, and we really are! 1John 3:1
Make time for what is important; make time for God.
Honor the LORD in everything you do, and don’t follow your
own desires or talk idly. If you do this, the LORD will be your
delight. Isaiah 58: 13-14
When was the last time you simply enjoyed God’s love for
you?
And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your
hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep
into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the
power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide,
how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May
you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you
will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the
fullness of life and power that comes from God.

A couple and their young son went to church, and
when they came out the parents were complaining
that the service was too long, the preacher was no
good, and the singing was off-key.Finally the little boy said, "I thought it was pretty
good since you only paid them a dime."
An old Washington DC preacher was dying. He sent a message for two lobbyists who attended his church. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room the preacher held out his hands and motioned for them to sit, one on each side of his bed. The preacher grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything. Both the lobbyists were touched and flattered that the preacher would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled; the preacher had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them. They both remembered his many long, uncomfortable sermons about greed, covetousness and avaricious behavior that made them squirm in their seats.
Finally, one said, "Preacher, why did you ask us to come?" The old preacher mustered up his strength, then said weakly, "Jesus died between two crooks; and that's how I want to go."
