G ood Day Temple Israel Family,
I hope this article finds you well. The Summer is upon us, and despite the joy of sun, rain, and maybe a little free time to play, recent events in Central Florida and our world have likely captivated our at-tention. Your Temple Israel Leadership Team is putting together a Safety and Security Committee, and your participation is welcome. We have also en-gaged in conversation local Security services, local Law Enforcement, and we are evaluating our internal policies to best safeguard our Congregational Fam-ily.
We are embarking on a new relationship with our friends at Temple Shir Sha-lom in Oviedo. Beginning June 24, Temple Shir Shalom will be sharing our facility for services either on a Friday evening or Saturday morning. We will be making friends, enjoying our time together, and let’s show our hospitality and kindness to our friends at TSS. Along with our new Shared Space Agree-ment, we have collaborated with Temple Shir Shalom through our Religious School. Beginning in August, Temple Israel will house MAGAL, The Meitin Alliance for Growth & Learning, a Collaborative Religious School of Temple Israel and Temple Shir Shalom. Rabbi Neely and Cantor Kim Singer will oversee the school with wonderful teachers at their side.
Many thanks to our Lay Leaders, including Terri Fine Stenzler, for leading services while Rabbi takes his Summer vacation. Our Fridays and Saturdays will continue as normal, with a little twist in presentation, but with no com-promise in our message, and our spirituality.
Beginning July 5, 2016, Lea Ahlers will begin as our new Office Administra-tor. Lea brings a wealth of management experience and we look forward to her contribution to Temple Israel. Please stop by the office to welcome Lea, who hails from Montreal, where she had a significant role in Jewish Organiza-tional life.
Finally, a simple wish. I wish you all health, and happiness. I look forward to seeing you at Shul, whether in services, or in activities. If you have any ques-tions, we can answer them for you. If you have something in your life worthy of mention, please mention it. Until we see each other again.

Sisterhood News

A s Sisterhood embarks on its 2016-17 year, we all look forward to engaging each member by developing interactions where relationships are of highest
importance. Programming can get people in the door, but when we invest in inviting, establishing and cultivating positive connections, we can’t help but have another suc-
cessful year.
As I find myself with the word “president” after my name, I am quick to point out that “president” is preceded by two very important letters – a “c” and an “o” – which, of course, means I’m not in this alone. I am fortunate to have the best co-president ever, Cathy Swerdlow, a dear friend who represents the essence of what Sisterhood is all about and who has a special knack to make all our educational ef-forts seem like back-porch conversations rather than formal presentations. This is an advantage in being involved in an informal community of loving sisters that depends on positive relationships and the gifts of its members to continue moving forward.
Our 2016-17 officers are uniquely equipped with talent and motivation to offer their sis-ters, their congregational family and their en-tire community at large meaningful activities while, at the same time, always supporting Klal Yisrael. Our Sisterhood is a place of extraordinary community, the very thing most of us want. Each person brings her particular needs, history, skills and passions – things that are essential to our life together – to the whole. Smaller groups such as ours can move and experiment more readily than larger groups. We can move a program outdoors or down the street in a moment’s notice. We can change how we do something for a season to see whether another approach might be more meaningful, we can change our meeting time with surprising swiftness and, perhaps most importantly, we can talk about and explain, dis-cuss and even argue with each other, and then break bread together in harmony.
Please watch for information about our first event of the year. I look forward to working with each of you to make this year our very best yet. Sisterhood is a great place to be!

As Orlando continues on its healing journey, the Jewish community is taking up Mayor Buddy Dyer's June 19th call to continue showing compassion and unity "30 days from now."
Drawing from the Jewish tradition of Sh'loshim, which marks the passage of the first 30 days of mourning, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federa-tion of Greater Orlando is organizing a communal event in
support of and in solidarity with the LGBT and Hispanic communities. On Sunday, July 10, which on the Jewish calendar marks the start of the 30th day since the Pulse massacre, we invite you to join us at Congregation Ohev Shalom in Maitland at 7:30 pm to share a tradition, stand together, and draw strength from our combined commitment to our Central Florida community. Temple Israel’s Adult Education committee presents a lecture by Rabbi Joshua Neely on July 24, 2016 in the Roth Social Hall at 4:00 pm.
The topic is “I Want to Believe: How to Grow Belief.” Rambam writes that belief comes last not first. It is not the price of admission to a meaningful life but the result of our experiences, our stud-ies and, most importantly, our choices.
Judaism is a network of activities designed to help us learn to believe. However, the first step is ours: do we want to believe? Many of us see belief as being blind and dumb. Many portray “true belief ” as being unquestioning submission to authority and a rejection of reason. Judaism does not work like that and the beliefs to which it leads us are inspiring, ennobling and empowering. Rabbi Neely will discuss the belief-goals of our tradition, why they matter, how to get there and why that journey is the most important thing. We hope you can join us for the important and inspiring talk.
I Want to Believe
Latino ShabbatLatino ShabbatLatino Shabbat Join us for another Latino Shabbat on Saturday, July 16 & Saturday, August 13 at 10:30 am in the Savage Family Chapel. The service will be conducted in Spanish and Hebrew using a siddur in both languages. It will begin immediately after the Torah service; It will include a D'var Torah in Spanish. After the discussion on the Parasha of the week and the Musaf service, a kiddush with Latin flavor will be served in the Roth Social Hall. The service is open to the entire Jewish community of Orlando.

An experiential workshop to help open up the channels of spirit that connect us to
God. Led by Rabbi Joshua Neely, this will include meditation, guided imagery,
breathing exercises and more. Held in the Savage Family Chapel at 9:30 am.
Continue your Shabbat experience with Rabbi Neely for the Torah service in the Rein Sanctuary.

Tot Shabbat is a joyful and engaging program geared toward families with young children, ages 5 and
under (older siblings are welcome too). This 30-minute program includes Shabbat themed songs,
dancing, stories, a Torah parade, simple blessings, and Challah and juice too! Tot Shabbat meets at
11:15 am in a bright and cheerful kid-friendly section of our Kindergarten classroom 1. Led by
Nina Fine.
Bring your friends and meet other families with small children as we celebrate Shabbat with the
youngest members of our community! All are welcome, and temple membership is not required. Af-
terward, stay and join our entire congregation for our Shabbat Kiddush Luncheon.

From Our Education VP

A s Mark Kluger announced in his column, our temple and Temple Shir Shalom are forming a collaborative religious school. The following letter provides further details and was sent to
our school families in June: The newly formed community school will be called the Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning, a Collaborative Religious School by Temple Israel and Temple Shir Shalom. The school will be known as MAGAL, the Hebrew word for circle and a symbol of oneness.
Although each congregation has its unique character, we are one in our commitment to provide a strong Jewish edu-cation and identity to our children. Classes will be held at Temple Israel and will continue at the same times as before, Wednesdays from 5pm-6:30pm for 3rd-7th grade and Sundays from 9am-12:30pm for Pre-K – 7th grade. We are so happy that our children will have twice as many Jewish students with whom to connect.
Another change coming to our school this year is the desire for fiscal responsibility and the push for the school to cover its costs with tuition fees. In the last several years, the Temple Israel religious school has been heavily subsi-dized by the congregation.
This coming year, MAGAL provides us a fresh start to balance our school budget going forward. Therefore, tuition for the 2016-2017 school year will be $375 for Pre-K-2nd grade and $525 for 3rd-7th grade. This represents the ac-tual cost of providing the quality of education we want for our children. We know that this is a significant amount but no student will be turned away because of inability to cover tuition. Please speak to our bookkeeper about payment plans. If you find the new tuition schedule to be insurmountable, scholarships are available from the congregation.
FAQ’s Q – Are TI and TSS merging? A: No. Just the religious schools are merging. Both congregations cherish their own unique identities and fully in-tend to preserve their independence. Q – But TI is Conservative and TSS is Reform. How will that work? A: The curriculum is truly very similar. While there are some prayer differences, any specifically Conservative prayers will be reserved for Wednesday classes, as TSS has historically met only on Sundays. TSS students are encouraged to attend Wednesday classes but will not be required to do so. Q – How many students will there be? How many classrooms? A: We are expecting to double the size of our school, as both synagogues currently have similar enrollment. While your returned registration forms will be needed for final numbers, we expect to have three classrooms: Pre-K -2nd, 3rd
-5th, and 6th-7th. Q – Who will run the school? A: Rabbi Neely and Cantor Kim will run the school jointly, aided by the education committee comprised of the edu-cation board member of each synagogue Kris Crane and Dale Mester, and two additional congregants from each syna-gogue.
Save the Dates: Sunday, July 24th 11am – Teachers and Madrichim will be setting up and organizing the MAGAL classrooms. Wed & Thurs, August 3 & 4 – Passport to Hebrew – watch for more info. Sunday, August 7th 11am-1:30pm – Summer Sunday at the JCC – come meet your new classmates while playing in the pool and enjoying a free lunch. Wednesday, August 17th 5pm-6:30pm – Informal Meet & Greet for teachers and students at MAGAL classrooms. Sunday, August 21st 9am-12:30pm – Parents are encouraged to stay with their children and join in the fun activities on our first day of school at MAGAL!

I Am The Face of Temple Israel
Elliott Davis
My family
was born in Montreal, Canada in 1951. I immigrated to Florida in
1992 with my late wife, Marlene and my son Mark. We originally
settled in S. Florida, and after 2 moves between Orlando and S.
Florida, I moved back to the Longwood area, where I plan to
stay. I started dating my bashert, Judy, in November, 2012 and
we were married in February, 2015. Mark lives in Lake Nona
with his wife Erica and their 3 beautiful children (our grandkids)
– 9 year old Kyle, 7 year old Sarah and 6 year old Jayden. Judy’s
daughter, Michelle, lives in Miami Beach and her son, Daniel,
lives in New York City with his wife Shoshana and their 9 month
old daughter (our granddaughter) Adina.
Things I do in life
I have spent my entire career as an accountant. I worked in both
public accounting offices and private industries in Montreal, and
have worked in the hospitality industry since moving to Florida. I
have 2 Bachelor’s degrees – Business Administration and Hospi-
tality Management. I am presently a Sr. Budget Analyst for a local
resort. Prior to this position, I spent 18 years as a construction
accountant /manager. I also owned and managed a small busi-
ness – “Elliott to the Rescue”, which assisted seniors with travel,
errands and home repairs. I was their “Gitta Neshuma”.
Things I love to do in my spare time
Judy and I are avid road bike enthusiasts. We cycle most week-
ends with various groups. I also am a big time sports fan. My
favorite sport? You guessed it, hockey. My favorite team –
Montreal Canadiens (Go Habs Go)!! I also follow major league
baseball (Washington Nationals) and college football (Florida
Gators – Go Gators)!! I played hockey for most of my youth and
started playing softball at age 35. I have always been a pitcher
and played for the Temple Israel softball team in the JCC league.
I enjoy travel and my bucket list of where Judy and I plan to visit
once I retire is growing. And you will never see me without my
iPhone in hand. Listening to TunedIn radio, looking up trivia on
Google and occasionally using it as a telephone.
My favorite sayings
When someone asks me – Is it heavy? I answer – “Only when
you lift it”!! I also like to use the words “MAGNIFICENT”
and “FANTASTIC” when describing my life with Judy.

I Am The Face of Temple Israel My family
I grew up in Orlando in a family of strong
Jewish values. My mother was born in Or-
lando to the Family of Wittenstein-Shader
while my father was a holocaust escapee
from Germany. I am married to Valerie with
three sons, Alex, Philip and Aaron who have
gifted us five granddaughters to date. Valerie
and I live in Maitland and plan our next visit
to family.
Things I do in life
My life is that of a dentist volunteer. I so en-
joy our community and do as much as I can
to improve our society, locally to interna-
tionally.
Things I love to do in my spare time
My spare time involves volunteering in the
community, watching my garden grow and
learning of the joys of life, the gifts that I
cherish.
My favorite sayings
My favorite sayings frequently are songs of
the Shabbat services and the Psalms. I whit-
tle when I work, I sculpt all day, and family
comes first, only I can make myself happier.

The Temple Israel Cemetery Corporation requests
that they be notified of any event that is scheduled to
take place at the Temple Israel Cemetery such as an
unveiling. This request is made so that the cemetery is
made presentable, so that the grave site has been
cleaned of fallen debris, to coordinate any unusual
activities from being scheduled at the same time such
as tree trimming and to make sure the irrigation sys-
tem has been turned off. This request is made so that
potential conflicts are prevented.

Prayer Book/Torah Commentary Dedications
The dedication of a prayer book (siddur) or Torah Commentary (chumash) is a uniquely appropriate way to make a gift of
tzedakah that benefits the congregation for years to come. Your dedicated siddur or chumash will be utilized by the entire
congregation. A book plate with your specific dedication will be placed in the book prior to its addition into the congre-
gation circulation and an acknowledgement card will be sent. The appropriate minimum contribution for each sacred
book is as follows:

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses, and without generous dona-
tions we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent
a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many members who have the ability
and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership
category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity
of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustainability and growth of Temple Israel.
In appreciation of this increased-dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple
Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a res-
ervation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seating area at all of the High
Holiday services.
The following giving levels are suggested:
Benefactors $15,000 and up
Pillars $10,000 to $14,999
Defenders $7,800 to $9,999
Guardians $5,300 to $7,799
Protectors $3,300 to $5,299
Preservers $2,400 to $3,299
Kindlers $2,000 to $2,399
