Personal questions are seen as a way to show ones con-cern for another. In no way does the person mean to benosy. AnswerD would be the best answer.

AnswerA would damage the other persons kibun. If thelie in answer Cwere found out, you would be viewed fa-vorably. Answer B may be viewed as a joke, but it may beseen as a lack of humility.

Situation 5

On your birthday, a former Korean student drops byyour house with a small gift. What do you do?

A. Invite him in, thank him for a gift, and offer himsomething to drink.

B. Invite him in, open the gift in his presence, and askhim to stay for the next meal.

C. Tell him you appreciate the thought, but that you can-not accept such a gift. This is done to prevent the obli-gation of any favors.

Comments:

Koreans consider therelationship betweenteacher and student to belifelong. It is not unusualfor a student to give histeacher a gift, even whenthe teacher is no longerteaching him.

Answer A is the best answer. Answer B is impolite because

after the gift is opened the giver might be embarrassed athow small it is. Returning the gift, as in answer C, wouldbe rude and unnecessary. One of the first things I noticed

when I got to Korea was the fashion.Koreans are very fashionable. Every-where I looked was like a fashion show.

There are so many different combina-tions in terms of color, skirts, jeans, andblouses and other pieces. People here aremore daring when it comes to the will-ingness to try new and creative coordina-tion. Women in particular are very goodat hiding flaws and imperfectionshighlighting what they perceive is goodabout their bodies.

I suppose it is because Koreansare very conscious about beauty andphysical appearance. Plastic surgery isquite common among women here. Ac-cording to some of my Korean friends,people here would tend to judge a per-sons character based on appearance. Myown experience with Koreans is thatthey are very high on first impressions.Here, first impressions last. And the firstimpression or feeling they get from aperson during the first meeting is oftenvery difficult to change. A lot of Kore-

ans are face readers that is, they couldtell a lot about your personality based onyour facial features. Its like palm read-ing only they use the face instead of the

hands.

I think it is interesting to notethat the traditional Korean costume, thehanbok, totally hides the shape of awomans body. That leaves only the faceexposed. And so, the emphasis when itcomes to gauging beauty is also, firstand foremost, the face. The body is onlysecondary.

How does it compare to Filipinoculture? Well, I think that our traditionalfemale Filipino attire, the Baro at Saya,conceals the body but flatters it at thesame time. I think it adds mystery andelegance to the female body. I may bewrong but my own experience also tellsme that for pinoys, the body is a veryimportant and perhaps a primary consid-eration when it comes to beauty.

The current standard fashion, iscourse, the jeans and t-shirt. Its allike a uniform among pinoys for casattire. In the Philippines, almost eve

one wears jeans and t-shirt. OPENING

114.For most people, faith simply

means believing in God. ChristianFaith is believing in the God revealedby Jesus Christ. Catholic ChristianFaith means believing that Christreveals God to us in and through theCatholic Church, the body of Christ,united in the Holy Spirit. Believinghere means realizing that God iscalling us to share His divine life

__that is His pagpapakilala to us.Faith is our personal response asdisciples of Christ of accepting himas Lord and Savior. It is ourPlease come in! to Christ who

stands at the door and knocks (Rv3:20) (PCP II 64). But how do wecome to know the way to respond toHim? What is this response we callfaith?

115.We use faith today to meandifferent things. Sometimes it meansour total response to Gods revela-tion. It is to know, to love, to followC h r i s t i n t h e C h u r c h h efounded (PCP II 36). Or we can usefaith to mean the virtue (believing)as distinct from hoping and loving.

Faith in this sense means our per-sonal knowledge of God in Christ,expressed in particular beliefs inspecific truths by which we adhere toChrist. In this chapter we take faith tomean our whole life in Christ, butwith primary focus on personallyknowing Christ as our Truth. Themoral activity of love will be the focusof Part II of this Catechism, Christ

our Way, while our Christian hopewill be developed especially in PartIII, Christ our Life.

CONTEXT116.The Philippines is noted for

being the only Christian country in Asia. Christian Faith is one of thedistinguishing characteristics of ourpeople. Yet today it is common tohear Filipino Catholics acknowledg-ing how little they know of theirChristian Faith. Many admit they taketheir Christian Faith for granted. Itenters their lives mostly throughreligious ceremonies attached tofamily celebrations such as baptisms,marriages, funerals, and houseblessings. It is a faith of traditionalpious practices, and sometimes evenof superstitions, drawn from ourFilipino social, religious, and culturalenvironment. Such a faith is danger-ously open to proselytizing by otherreligious sects of all kinds, or cor-rupted by the attractions of worldlysecularism (cf. Mt 13:4-9, 18-23).

117.PCP II describes this situa-tion:

For most of our people today the

faith is centered on the practice ofrites of popular piety. Not on theWord of God, doctrines, sacramentalworship (beyond baptism and matri-mony). Not on community. Not onbuilding up our world unto the imageof the Kingdom. And we say it isbecause the unchurched, the vastmajority of our people, greatly lackknowledge of and formation in thefaith (PCP II 13).

Often this is called Folk Catholi-cism.

118.Today many Filipino Catho-lics yearn for a more mature Catholicfaith and prayer life. But certain divi-sive trends and attitudes are alsowidespread. Some preach Christiandoctrine in such a fundamentalistway that they ignore the wider de-mands of Christian charity and ser-vice. Others so stress active ideo-logical commitment to justice and

the poor as to practically

deny all value to prayer and worship.Finally, still others faith is marked byan individualistic piety, often accom-panied by an exaggerated bahala nafatalism. These excesses or distor-

tions give a false picture of authenticCatholic Faith. They also show howimportant it is to understand whatCatholic Faith really is, and how itshould operate in our daily lives.

EXPOSITION

I. FAITH IN HUMAN RELATIONS

119.Faith in its broadest sense isa central reality in Filipino life. It is aneveryday natural factor in all ourhuman relationships and daily ac-tions. For example, in accepting theword of others, we already show ourfaith (paniniwala) in them. We readilyobey the directions of those over us,at home, at work, in our communities(pagsunod). We even entrust our-selves and our welfare to others:doctors, teachers, judges, civic lead-ers, not to mention cooks, jeepneydrivers, etc. Without such basic hu-man faith which includes believingacceptance, obedient action andpersonal entrusting, human lifewould be impossible. Faith as ahuman reality, therefore, is central to

our daily lives.120.For Filipinos, this can be

seen most clearly in our family lifeand friendships. We grow up, nur-tured and supported by the trust,love and fidelity of our family. Wemature through a process of formingpersonal friendships, first as children,then as teenagers, finally as adults.But in each case, there is a gradualrevelation of our own inner self to ourfriend, and a free acceptance of ourfriends self-revelation. If this friend-

ship is to grow and mature, it mustinclude a turning toward the other,a conversion. We acknowledge ourneed and trust in the others friend-ship by listening to and identifyingwith our friend.

121.Filipinos do all this spontane-ously, naturally, but not without diffi-culty. Sometimes we turn away, orrefuse to listen, or are rejected by theother. But genuine friendships create

mutual loving knowledge of eachother. In them we experience some-thing that liberates us from our ownnarrowness, and opens us to fullerlife and love. We realize that friend-

ship freely offered us by another,also demands our free response. It isa response that is never just one act,but a long process of growing inti-macy with our friend. Inevitably,others among our families and asso-ciates are eventually involved. Espe-cially God.

II. FAITH IN GOD

122.Faith in God is grounded inGods own revelation through hiswords and deeds in salvation history.It is confirmed by the many reasons

for believing that have been workedout throughout the centuries, re-sponding to the biblical challenge:Always be ready to give an explana-tion to anyone who asks you for areason for your hope (1 Pt 3:15).

A.Characteristics of ChristianFaith

Total and Absolute

123.Already the Old Testamentcontrasted faith in man in whomthere is no salvation with faith in the

Lord who made heaven and earth . . .who shall reign forever (cf. Ps146:3,5-6,10; Jer 17:5-8). Only Faithin God calls for a total and absoluteadherence (cf. CCC 150). Christhimself provides, especially in hisPassion, Death and Resurrection,the best example of this total andabsolute commitment to God.

Trinitarian

124.For us Christians, Faith is ouradherence to the Triune God re-vealed through Jesus Christ our Lord.

It is our friendship with Christ andthrough Christ with the Father, intheir Holy Spirit. Through Christswitness to his Father in his teaching,preaching, miracles, and especiallyin his Passion, Death and Resurrec-tion, we come to believe in Christ ourSavior, in the Father, and in the HolySpirit sent into our hearts. Our Faithas Catholics, then, consists in ourpersonal conviction and belief in God

Karunungan:

Walang sinuman sa atin ang hindi nakakaranas ng problema, pagdurusa, sakit at mabibigat napasanin sa buhay. Madalas ay kaagad tayong nagrereklamo kapag hindi na natin ito makayananat nagtatanong: Bakit ba ako pa? Maging ang Panginoong Hesus ay inaasahan na ang darat-

ing Niyang paghihirap, pagkamatay at muling pagkabuhay. Kanyang sinabi na kailangangmagtiis ng marami ang Anak ng Tao. Itatakwil Siya ng matatanda ng bayan, ng mga punong-pari at ng mga guro ng batas. Papatayin Siya at muling babangon sa ikatlong araw. Itinakda rinNiya na ang sinumang naghahangad sumunod sa Kanya ay kailangang maging handang hara-pin ang sariling paghihirap, pagkamatay at muling pagkabuhay. Ang pagsunod sa Panginoonay pagsunod sa daan ng krus. Magiging tunay na mga alagad lamang tayo kung kalilimutannatin ang ating sariling kapakanan at papasanin natin ang ating krus.

Araw-araw ay pinapasan natin ang ating krus na nagdudulot sa atin ng ibat ibang uri ng sakitat pagdurusa. Mayroong mga nagrereklamo dahil sa bigat ng kanilang trabaho. Ang iba naman

ay dumarating sa pagkakataong wala nang sapat na makakain ang kanilang pamilya. May ibanaman na bagamat sagana sa materyal na bagay, subalit uhaw naman sa pagmamahal at atensi-yon. Panglima, labanan ang takot. Walang tao anghindi nakakaramdam ng takot. Bawat isa ay maykanya-kanyang takot sa anumang aspeto ng buhay.Ang tao ay nagkakaiba hindi sa laki o liit ng takotna dala natin sa ating sarili, kung hindi sa paraankung paano natin ginagamit ito. Maging ang mgabayani ay may takot na dala sa kanilang mga sarili,subalit sa kabila nito, ginawa pa din nila angkanilang naisin, ito ang dahilan kung bakit silakinilala at hinangaan.

Minsan subukan nating gawin ang mga bagay

na sa tingin natin ay makakatulong sa atin sa hina-harap kahit na may takot tayong gawin ito.Madalas ay mas natatakot tayo sa maliit na kahihi-yang idudulot sa atin ng isang bagay kapag ginawanatin ito at hindi tayo magtagumpay, sa halip namanghinayang tayo sa mas malaking biyaya nanag-aabang sa atin kung sakaling gawin natin itoat magtagumpay tayo. Labanan ang takot at asahannating mas marami tayong magagawa sa atingbuhay.

Panghuli, mahalaga ang direksyon at plano sabuhay. Kung wala tayo nito, para tayong nagla-

lakad sa disyerto na nakapiring ang mata. Masmadali nating maaabot ang ating mga pangarapkung isasalin natin ito sa plano, nakasulat at de-talyado...sa ganitong paraan, mas madali natingmararating ang ating mga pangarap sa buhay dahilnakikita natin ang mga mahahalagang bagay nadapat nating gawin. Magkakaroon tayo ng focus atdireksyon, mabibigyan natin ng kahalagahan angmga bagay na importante at hindi importante sabuhay natin. Sa ganitong paraan, mababawasanang mga ginagawa nating hindi tumutugma sa naisnating marating. Lahat ng gagawin mo sa buhayay naka-focus sa mga bagay na makakatulong saiyong mga plano at mabubuting pangarap sa bu-hay. Ang oras ang pinakamahalagang kakampi ng

tao upang magtagumpay, kung mababawasan natinang mga gawaing hindi importante sa ating mgapangarap, mas madali tayong makakarating saating nais puntahan.

Hanggat hindi tayo nagigingsponsable sa sarili nating mga desisyon, hnatin makikita na kaya nating baguhin ang asitwasyon at kinalalagyan sa kasalukuyan khindi ka man kuntento dito.

Madaming panahon na ang nawala, marapagkakataon na ang nasayang, bawat araw naiba tayong bansa ay isang araw na wala din taytabi ng ating mga mahal sa buhay. At kadalasanangyayari ito dahil lamang sa maling panwala....kasi bulok ang gobyerno, kasi ipinangakaming mahirap, kasi magastos ang mga anakkasi yung kapitbahay namin, kasi ang abu saykasi..kasi...ang daming kasi. Nakakita na ba kng taong umasenso dahil marami siyang KASbuhay?

Ang El Shaddai

Naiinis ako sa kapitbahay ko satuwing magpapatugtog sya ng mgaawiting papuri para kay El Shaddai.Halos nabibingi ako at parangnakakatamad silang pagmasdan sakanilang pag indak. Lagi nila iyongginagawa. At ako naman hindi komaintindihan kung ano ba talaga angpinapupurihan nila. Minsan nanonoodpa sila ng palabas sa TV ni BrotherMike. Wow parang nasa loud speakerna yung volume. Ito ay isa sa mgabagay na naalala ko sa PIlipinas.

Sa ikalawang pababalik ko sa Ko-rea, nakituloy ako sa Philippine Center.Tuwing gabi ay nagkakaroon ng misa.Kabilang ako sa mga dumadalo sabanal na pagtitipon. At gabi ng Huwe-

bes, ikinagulat ko ang pagkakaroon ngpagpupuri sa El Shaddai. Hindi nagingmalinaw sa akin kung ano ba angtunay na kahulugan nito at bakit kailan-gan nila magkaroon ng dalawang

pananampalataya. Kay Kristo sa Kato-liko at Yahweh para sa El Shaddai

Isa ako sa lumahok sa Santacruzanat sa kadahilanang wala naman akongkasintahan. Kinausap ko ang isa sakaibigan ko na gumagawa rin ng tuladito sa Sambayanan. Isa sa mgakondisyon niya ay mag attend munaako sa El Shaddai. Siyempre sumagotako ng matinding hindi. Hanggang saipinaliwanag niya kung ano ba angtunay na kahulugan ng El Shaddai.

Ang El Shaddai pala ay isangparaan upang maipahayag natin angating tunay na pananampalatayangmga Katoliko. Sa unang araw ko doon,napaiyak agad ako. Nahihiya manakong kumanta at itaas pa ang aking

kamay. Dinamdam kong maigi angpresensiya ng Panginoon. Napaka-sarap ng panahong iyon, parangkausap ko si Lord. Naramdaman ko naparang katabi ko lang siya at kami ay

nagu-usap.Bagamat saglit na panahon lamang

ang naiaalay ko sa kadahilanang akoay abala sa mga gawain sa Hyehwa.Pinilit kong magkaroon ng panahonpara sa isa pang pagkakataon.Nakitipon ako sa pagsama sama nilatuwing Sabado. At ang gabing iyon angsimula ng paglal im ng akingpananampalataya. Ang pagsakripisyopara sa pagmamahal para sa kanya.

Abala tayo sa ating mga gawain. Samga organisasyon, sa panonood ngtele-serye, sa pakikipag kwentuhan, sapag internet, at marami pang iba. Oo athindi naman pwede natin ipalit lahapara sa ating panalangin. Sa araw nanabuksan ang puso ko sa El Shaddai,

Nearly 4,000 firms violate labor standar ds - DOLE

MANILA, Philippines - Nearly 4,000 commercial establishmentsinspected nationwide are violating core labor standards and social wel-fare benefits, an agency of the the Department of Labor and Employment(DOLE) said Thursday.

According to a report by the Bureau of Working Condition (BWC),about 44.5 percent or some 3,804 out of 8,555 establishments inspectedwere violators of labor standards and benefits.

Of the total, 1,406 firms were discovered to have been remiss in giv-ing the prescribed minimum wage while 954 companies were not payingtheir workers' Pagibig, SSS, and PhilHealth contributions.

During the inspection, the inspectors found that some 4,751 of the8,555 establishments so far covered by the nationwide inspection blitzwere generally compliant on labor standards, registering a total compli-ance rate of 55.53 percent. At the same time, more than two-thirds of theestablishments inspected or 5,821 of 8,555 establishments were foundcompliant on core labor standards, posting a compliance rate of 68.04percent, with compliance on the minimum wage reaching 83.57%(7,149).

On the other hand, the compliance on social welfare benefits stood at88.85% (7,601 establishments), with that on PhilHealth, SSS and PagI-big, respectively, reaching 93.61% (8,008), 93.35% (7,986), and 90.40%(7,734).

The BWC said that plant site corrections on the violations and defi-ciencies involving core labor standards and social welfare benefits wereimmediately instituted on 610 establishments, resulting in total fieldrestitutions amounting to P8,834,426.80, benefiting 10,421 workers.

In total, BWC said some 3,581 cases on labor standards violationswere handled, of which 1,444 have been disposed, resulting in awards orsettlements amounting to P37,432,358.01, benefiting 18,059 workersnationwide. - GMANews.TV

labor, more than half a million overseas Filipino workers were deployedin more than 190 countries in the first five months of 2008, the Labordepartment said.

This, as it noted that global OFW remittances have reached $5.4 bil-lion (more than P240.89 billion) in the first four months of 2008.

In a press statement posted on the Department of Labor and Employ-ment (DOLE) website on Friday, Labor Sec. Marianito Roque said this ismore than 12 percent higher than the deployment figures during the sameperiod last year.

Roque cited the latest preliminary report of the Philippine OverseasEmployment Administration (POEA) that some 516,466 documented

OFWs have been globally deployed from January to May this year,boosted by an 8.6 percent increment in new hires from 142,618 in thesame period last year, to 154,841 from January to May this year.

"The 516,466 OFWs deployed from January to May 2008 represents asubstantial growth of 12.4 percent (+57,052), from the total 459,414OFWs deployed in the same period in 2007," Roque said.

Roque noted that the number of OFWs deployed during the first fivemonths of the year alone, now represents some 51.6 percent, or morethan half, of the total goal to deploy one million documented OFWsworldwide in 2008. He added the continued growth and strength ofglobal OFW deployment reflects the distinct global preference for Fili-pino workers.

In the statement, Roque said the strength of global OFW deployment sig-nificantly figures in the substantial rise in global OFW remittances, which areprojected to approach or surpass $15 billion. Roque cited the Bangko Sentralng Pilipinas' (BSP) report saying the growth in the number of deployed OFWsreinforced remittance flows, alongside the "upbeat prospects" in the globalmarket for sustained OFW opportunities.

The BSP report mentioned that the number of OFWs globally deployedgrew by 14 percent from 350,520 in the same period last year to 399,638 dur-ing the first four months this year. BSP also noted that the prospects forglobal OFW deployment remain upbeat due to the Philippines' efficient de-ployment system, reinforced by the country's continuing bilateral cooperationfor OFW employment opportunities with emerging markets like Canada andother host countries.

The BSP report added the Philippines had also been cited as the "Best Prac-tice Country" by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRDKorea) due to the efficiency of the OFW deployment system and the processimprovements. - GMANews.TV

Gov't helps over 2,000 typhoon-hit families of OFWs

MANILA, Philippines - Over 2,000 families of overseas Filipino workers(OFWs) in the hardest hit areas of typhoon "Frank" received relief goods andmedicines from the Department of Labor (DoLE) on Tuesday.

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said the Overseas Workers Welfare Ad-ministration (OWWA) led the distribution of relief goods and medicines to theaffected OFWs families in Iloilo and Antique.

In a statement on the DoLE website, Roque said DoLE-Region 6 office inIloilo City also distributed relief goods to displaced workers in Aklan andAntique and to affected sugar workers in the region.

Roque said the relief goods and medicines worth some P700,000 camefrom OWWA funds and the socio-economic program fund for sugar workersand their dependents.

He said the provision of relief assistance to the affected workers and their

families was part of the DoLE's efforts to help them regain their productivecapability.

He said that while the relief assistance was immediately extended to theaffected workers, the DoLE also promptly established efforts to provide amore permanent solution to the economic devastation brought about by Ty-phoon Frank to displaced workers in the Visayas.

On Tuesday, DoLE entered into an agreement initially with 15 local gov-ernment units (LGUs) in Iloilo for the implementation of its emergency em-ployment and livelihood assistance program for workers displaced by thetyphoon.

Under the agreement, the LGUs will provide the DoLE their proposals oninfrastructure projects under which the displaced workers may be employed.Upon evaluation of the projects, the DoLE will release to the LGUs the fundsneeded.

Earlier, Roque ordered the release of P33 million fund for the employmentassistance and livelihood restoration of displaced workers in Regions 6, 7, and8. He said the hiring of the displaced workers for these projects will becoursed through the Provincial and Municipal Public Employment ServiceOffices (PESOs).

At the same time, he added, the DOLE will mobilize its accredited co-partners (ACPs) in the implementation of a follow-through program aimed atrestoring the livelihood of the affected workers and their families. This is inline with President Arroyo's call for long-term measures towards generatingemployment opportunities for workers who have been temporarily or perma-nently displaced due to typhoon Frank, Roque said. - with reports from FidelJimenez, GMANews.TV
