Our Challenge

Dear friends,

In our first reading from the Book of Genesis, we hear Abraham praying on behalf of the residents of Sodom. It’s of some comfort when it seems that God is

not answering my prayers—at least not in the way I want---to know that He didn’t answer Abraham’s entreaties favorably either. Speaking to the earliest

Christians in Colossae in modern-day Turkey in our second reading this weekend, St. Paul reminds us that the context of all our prayers is the saving grace revealed in

Christ’s death on the cross. In other words, we are empowered to pray as the friends of God, not as his enemies. Jesus gave his disciples a model prayer to teach them how to pray, which we call the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father. Among other things, that prayer instructs us to focus our attention on God before we draw attention to our own needs. The priorities of God’s kingdom take

precedence over all of our own concerns. There are many different forms of prayer. While prayer of petition is certainly valid, the higher form of prayer is when we are in relationship with God. It might be likened to the conversations we have with our closest friends. Prayer is not a matter of our calling to get God’s attention, but our finally listening to the call of God. He already knows us better than we know ourselves, and already knows all that we really need. Henri Nouwen has written, “The movement from illusion to prayer is hard to make since it leads us from false certainties to true uncertainties, from an easy support system to a risky surrender, and from the many ‘safe’ gods to the God whose love has no limits.” (Reaching Out)

Have a good week!

Love and prayers, Father Randy

MASS INTENTIONS

Word of Life July 28, 2019 “O God, you are faithful, and you never abandon those who hope

in you. I know that my

redemption from sin and death has been purchased at the cost of your Son’s blood. In return for this priceless gift, I resolve today to renew my trust Order | Full Prayer

in your unfailing mercy.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Trust in God’s Mercy” Prayer

MASS CELEBRANT SCHEDULE JULY 28, 2019

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we

have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming

lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and

disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of

time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved

Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, that we are spared from the calamities common to this area. Animated with a true spirit of gratitude, may we walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder (1895-1981), Second Bishop of Lafayette .
