When cool fall weath-er drives us inside, we often start to feel the urge to redecorate our homes. Before spend-ing your money on interior paint and new couch cushions, take some time to consider the trends in home-décor colours for 2011-2012. Choosing a new colour scheme is the most inexpen-sive way of transform-ing your home, but if you don’t choose wisely your home will soon have an outdated look.
Over the last few years, neutral colours have been popular for interiors, especially browns, beiges, and ligh ter tones of grey. These days, however, more colourful shades are moving in, such as dark reds, various shades of blues and greens, as well as rich earth tones, including gold and clay. Sunny yellows are also making a noticeable splash. Another trend is towards the use of blocks of colour on walls. This consists of creating square, rectangular, or round shapes on the walls, usually with the aim of highlighting a spe-cifi c architectural ele-ment.
Do your research: good paint stores have take-home pam-phlets containing the latest creative ideas. Remember that you should never use more than three dif-ferent colours in one room. When planning your paint décor, keep in mind the “60-30-10” rule: the dominant colour should take up 60 percent of painted surfaces, the second-ary colour, 30 percent, and the accent colour, 10 percent.

This year, bathrooms are expanding and taking on an XXL personality. That translates into extra-long counters, furnishings with long, clean lines, super-large sinks, spa-size baths, and showers with king-size bases and immense shower heads that provide cascades of warmth and relaxation.
The focal point of any bathroom is the bathtub — it sets the tone more than any other feature. Whether sporting the modern lines of contemporary design or the clawed feet of an antique model, bathtubs are the symbol of comfort. Mineral cast baths are modern reproductions of the clawed tub and are covered in polyester gel for a more comfortable feel. In keeping with the outsize trend, island or built-in bathtubs are getting bigger than ever before.
Showers are also increasing in size, many of them adopting an open design without door and four walls. For structurally conventional shower stalls, designers are throwing modesty to the wind as they choose doors and walls that are totally transparent. These tempered glass walls result in an increased impression of space and light and allow the inner design of the shower room to receive attention.
Bathroom sinks are also very much in the spotlight, adopting different shapes, materials, and patterns. Some hand-hewn models are treasures to behold. Richly decorated bowls are real eye-catchers, while the beauty of some sculpted models heightens the style of the bathroom.
