July 27, 201417th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew’s community, like ours, featured varying personalities who had arrived by dramati-cally differing paths. For some, the Kingdom is a surprise discovery, “a treasure buried in a field;” for others, a prized acquisition secured after a painstaking search, “a pearl of great price.” We even have a third group Matthew didn’t know, “cradle Catholics.” No wonder Jesus’ image of “a net thrown into the sea” rings true. So today’s Gospel repeats last Sunday’s caution. If we’ve for-gotten we’re in that mixed haul and instead fancy ourselves qualified or empowered to separate its contents into “Good” and “Bad,” Jesus warns, judgment postponed, separation deferred, until “the end of the age,” and even then, not by us: “the angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous.”
What if God dared offer us Solomon’s choice? We’d say, “Bring on the bling! A long, happy life for me! A shorter life for this ‘special’ list I’ve been compiling for years.” Too harsh? Or too true? What do we treasure? “An understanding heart to distinguish right from wrong”? We have before us a living treasure: God’s word, which can shape us to the image of our Elder Brother; and that Word made flesh in Jesus’ Body and Blood.
“Do you understand all these things?” Jesus asks. We may never understand all, but we can bring wisdom “new and old” (Jesus’ Torah/Mo-ses’ Torah) to bear on life’s dilemmas. And con-sider the great wealth already ours: “predestined, called, justified, glorified.”
Question of the WeekIn a world divided by economics and educa-
tion, by social status and political opinions, even sadly by race and religion, what can I do this week to bring people together?

PRAYER FOR WISDOMAlmighty God, you know the perils that surround me, and how easy it would be for me to slip and fall. Give me the wisdom that I need to do Your bidding, and avoid the snares that are set before me.
My path is dark before me. Send Your Holy Spirit to fill me with your light, and to guide me.
Help me do Your will, and to do what is best for me and those who depend on me.
Grant me the grace of wisdom. Make me wise enough to choose truth over falsehood, that I may not be deceived to my own undoing, and to the harm of others. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

NEW LECTORS NEEDED! We need some new lectors to serve in the ministry of the Word.
If you can read to a group of people, we need your help to proclaim God’s holy Word at weekend masses. Lectors typically serve no more than once per month. If we get enough new lectors we could possibly extend that interval of service. Deacon Pat Stokely will be conducting a lector training/refresher class right after summer for all our new and current lectors.
If you would like to serve in this capacity or just learn more, please email Mark Nowakowski at [email protected] or call at 267-972-1045.

We will be hosting another blood drive in December. We are looking for someone to help lead this effort, if you are interested in leading or helping, please contact the parish office. Tasks include coordinating parish advertising, making phone calls, helping the day of the drive. We are happy for any time you can give.

Religious Education at St. Basil the Great ParishThe Religious Education program at St. Basil the Great
Parish exists to provide sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation as well as ongoing faith formation for children who have received these sacraments. It strives to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ in the context of the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The program presents the four fundamental themes of the Catechism of the Catholic Church – Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer – in such a way that the children of our parish begin to understand how to live the Gospel. Classes are held weekly on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. from Sept. to May and open to all parish children in kindergarten through grade 7 who attend public or non-Catholic private school.
A message to parents of our Confirmation can-didates (who are not students at SBG School)

We have not yet received word on a date for the sacrament from the Bishop; you will be notified when we learn what it is. Please remember to complete a PREP registration form for your child and pay the appropriate tuition by August 15 to avoid late fees. Thank you for your cooperation!

Saint John Vianney, Patron of PriestsFeast Day - August 4
A novena is a special form of prayer, where on nine suc-cessive days, a prayer is said for some special occasion or in-tention. The practice of saying novenas is scripturally based, modeled after the nine days of consecutive prayer that the apostles, Blessed Mother, and other followers of Jesus prayed together in the upper room between Jesus’ ascension into heaven and the decent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Prayed in communion with the saints, novenas often petition the intercession of specially selected saints (our exemplary role models in faithful living). Let us pray together with St. John Vianney, Patron of Priests, for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. May the Lord of the harvest send many to work in His vineyard!
Novena: Sunday, July 27, to Monday, August 4Dear Saint John Vianney, your childhood dream was
to be a priest, to win souls for God. You endured years of toil and humiliation to attain the priesthood. You became a priest truly after God’s own heart, outstanding in humility and poverty, prayer and mortification. Total-ly devoted to the service of God’s people. The Church has exalted you as model and patron saint of all Parish Priest, trusting that your example and prayers will help them to live up to the high dignity of their vocation to be faithful servants of God’s people, to be perfect imita-tors of Christ the Savior Who came not to be served but to serve, to give His Life in ransom for many.
Pray that God may give to His Church today many more priests after His own heart. Pray for all the priests under your patronage, that they may be worthy represen-tatives of Christ the Good Shepherd. May they whole-heartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; be examples of humility and poverty; shining models of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of God’s Grace in the sacra-ments. May their loving devotion to Jesus in the Eucha-rist and to Mary His Mother be the Twin Fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry. Amen.
