ST. MARTHA

Feast day 29 July. From her diligence, we learn not to allow ourselves to be so overcome by daily duties that we ne-glect love; from her profession of faith we learn that life in God

makes us experience wonders that we could not believe possible.

She was from Bethany, a village a few kilometers from Jerusalem. The sister of Lazarus and Mary, she was considered diligent and meticulous; she was certainly one of the first to believe in Jesus. The Lord was often a guest in her home, espe-cially during the time of His preaching in Jerusalem.

Saint Luke in his Gospel, relating one time when Jesus was visiting His friends in Bethany, writes: “As they continued their journey He entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha wel-comed Him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet lis-tening to Him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to Him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.’ The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

The Master helps her to understand that even praiseworthy labor can risk obscur-ing the interior life. It is a warning that causes one to reflect on how important it is to nourish the spirit, to listen to the Word of God, because it is the Word of God that gives meaning to our daily ac-tivities. Nonetheless, on account of her admirable dedication to doing the work necessary to offer a guest a comfortable respite, the Church recognizes Martha as a model of industriousness.

St. Mary Magdalene (Feast day July 22) is

The Gospels agree that Mary was originally a great sinner. Jesus cast seven demons out of her when he met her. After this, she told several women she asso-ciated with and these women also became followers. There is also debate over if Mary Magdalene is the same unnamed women, a sinner, who weeps and washes Jesus' feet with her hair in the Gospel of John. Scholars are skeptical this is the same person. Despite the scholarly dispute over her background, what she did in her subsequent life, after meeting Jesus, is much more significant. She was certainly a sinner whom Jesus saved, giving us an example of how no person is beyond the saving grace of God. During Jesus' ministry, it is believed that Mary Mag-dalene followed him, part of a semi-permanent en-tourage who served Jesus and his Disciples. Mary likely watched the crucifixion from a distance along with the other women who followed Christ dur-ing His ministry. Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection. After the death of Christ, a legend states that she remained among the early Christians. After fourteen years, she was allegedly put into a boat by Jews, along with several other saints of the early Church, and set adrift without sails or oars. The boat landed in southern France, where she spent the remaining years of her life living in solitude, in a cave.

The End.

GOD’S GIFTS

Solomon was distinguished from all other kings in the Old Testament by God’s gifts to him. First, God appeared to him and told him to ask for a gift. Not many kings in Israel were honored by God in this way!

Solomon responded to God so beautifully! He asked for something all right, but it was not something worldly. He did not ask God for riches or long life. Instead, he asked God for wisdom to govern God’s people well.

And so he received God’s first gift, which was the opportunity to ask God for something, in such a way that his asking made him worthy of what God gave him when God answered his prayer.

Because he pleased God by what he asked of God, God gave him the wisdom

READINGS

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time—Year A

Reading I: 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12 Psalm: 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-130 Reading II: Romans 8:28-30 Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52

he asked for. And with that wisdom God gave him even more, namely, the gifts he had not asked for, things worthy of kings. In the text that continues the First Reading, God promised him the very worldly things he hadn’t asked for—namely, riches and long life—in addition to the wisdom he wanted. So Solomon was very great among the kings of the ancient Israel.

And yet what Christ gives to each one of his own people is greater than the gifts God gave Solomon. To each person who opens to Christ, Christ gives the indwelling Holy Spirit.

And with the Holy Spirit, he gives the seven gifts of the Spirit, too. The wisdom Solomon asked for is only the first of these. There are six more: understanding, counsel, knowl-edge, piety, fortitude, and fear of the Lord. There is an inestimable spiritual richness in these gifts, more than Solomon knew to ask for.

Furthermore, anyone who has these has not just long life, like Solomon, but ever-lasting life with the Lord. And even among the sorrows of this life, the consolations of the indwelling Spirit are present too, in the love, joy, and peace that are among the fruits of the Spirit.

And so Christ offers now to each one who will accept it from him something greater than the greatness of Solomon, not just wisdom but all the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, and with them unending life in the kingdom of heaven.

As Christ says in the Gospel reading, this is treasure indeed .

THE FIRST

HUMAN RIGHT

Cardinal Renato

Martino, when serving

as President of the Pon-

tifical Council for Jus-

tice and Peace, said the

following in an inter-

view conducted for

Priests for Life in May,

2004: "The Holy Father speaks of the protection of life as

the fundamental realization and respect for human rights.

Without that realization, without that respect for the right

to life, no other discussion of human rights can continue;

it must be based upon the foundation of human dignity

and the right to life.”
