It was a hot August day—although what day of the week it was I couldn’t tell you—as I stepped off the plane into the bustling

airport. My eyes, still blurry with sleep, struggled to read signs in a language I had only studied for six months and my ears strained to hear a familiar voice amid all the chatter floating about. I grabbed my bags and headed outside to the busy curb, where a van waited to pick me and about 50 of my classmates up and take us from Aeroporto di Fiumicino in Rome to Florence, Italy.

On the way there, we passed rolling hills blooming with golden sunflowers and col-orful villas with lines of clothing swaying in the gentle breeze as they languidly hung from balconies. Then I saw it. Like a weary traveler in the desert just finding water, my eyes eagerly drank up the lapping blue water of the River Arno, with its graceful bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, looming overhead. Following this sight, everyone on the bus rushed to the windows as the grand Duomo came into view. We were home, at least our home for the time.

The van made a few sharp turns over the cobbled streets, leading us away from the city center to a quieter, more residential area. I was so enamored with the views of the rivers and villas that I hardly noticed we had stopped. After piling out of the van and grabbing my two huge suitcases, I stood back and took a good look at the heavy brown doors of the old villa on Viale Milton and the people surrounding me. This place, Florence, Italy, would be my home for the next year, and these 50 people would become my family. I was ready to begin the journey.

In this issue we take the road less traveled, from a whimsical woodland resort in Oak Creek Canyon to the cascading Havasu and Mooney Falls to the pristine beaches and powdered slopes of California. Also, special to this issue, is our first travel-inspired fash-ion shoot, “Great Escape.”

I hope this summer takes you many wonderful places!

Whether you are new to the scene and are still unsure of what you might want, or have been in it for years and are looking to upgrade, Scottsdale RV is ready to help with an average of around 80 units on-site. Truly a one-stop-shop, they also work with a wide array of banks and credit unions to offer competitive financing options, and are well-versed in shipping across the country or even overseas.

“We have something for everyone, from somebody who wants to spend $10K on a nice, solid travel trailer, up to somebody who wants to spend $200K on something top-of-the-line,” says Rick, who him-self has been known to pick-up an incoming client from Sky Harbor or even deliver an RV to a client and do a six-hour walk-through of the unit at their own home.

Scottsdale RV

Summertime means summer vacation, and for many people the best way to relax and unwind is to venture into the great out-

doors. For those who like to bring along some of the comforts of home while camping in style, Scottsdale RV has been there to help for the past 10 years.

Owned by Ryan Beckmann and Rick Crankshaw, Scottsdale RV has established itself as one of the premier RV dealerships in the Valley, as well as one of the most convenient to get to.

“We picked Scottsdale for its centralized location to be able to serve the entire Valley,” explains Rick. “We are the only RV dealership conve-niently located to be able to serve everyone, unless you are willing to drive way out east or up to the northwest Valley. We also do a lot of out-of-state business, and being this close to the airport is also a big help for business.”

Scottsdale RV was originally founded as an independent dealer of previously owned RVs, though over the last few years they’ve elected to offer a wide selection of new models as well. They are proud to represent Work and Play Toy Haulers, of which they are the number one dealer on the West Coast, as well as a diverse line of Coachmen RVs, one of the most successful names in the RV industry since 1964.

“With Coachmen, it’s really just about their quality, their con-sistency, their level of customer service, and really their continued reputation in this business,” explains Rick.

With over 30 years in the RV industry, the Scottsdale team is not just in the business of selling RVs, but as avid RV-ers themselves,

GARLAND’S LODGE AT OAK CREEK CANYON OFFERS A HISTORICAL GETAWAY

When you drive north of Sedona on highway 89A, you will partake in one of the most beautiful and scenic drives in the country. Oak Creek Canyon is known for its

incredible canyon views, hiking trails and fantastic autumn colors. However, very few know that tucked away on the creek is a historic resort that has managed to remain serene and private since it first opened in 1928 as Todd’s Lodge.

The original 10-acre homestead was known as Crookneck Flat in the early 1900s. In 1908, Jesse Howard purchased the land and built the first log cabin, which later became the resort’s kitchen and dining room. The early settlers brought with them an irrigation system and planted fruit trees, which are still harvested today. In 1928, Frank and Catherine Todd purchased the lodge, where they entertained many guests visiting from Flagstaff, as well as miners from Jerome. The lodge soon earned a glowing reputation for being a treasured getaway.

After 44 years, the Todds sold the resort to Bill and Georgiana Garland. The Garlands took on the endeavor as a family project, creating the ambience we know today. They remodeled many of the older cabins and built five additional cabins, totaling 17. They also created delicious meals using the eggs, vegetables, fruit and herbs from their organic gardens. Road Trip (CONTINUED)

Two years ago, after 42 years of love, hard work and dedication, the Garlands sold the resort. The new owners, from Scottsdale, are committed to continuing the legacy of this wonderful wilderness sanctuary. The resident roosters and chickens are still being kept, Mario oversees the gardens, Rob tends to the trees and Chef Brian Widmer continues to prepare outstanding farm-to-table meals for guests.

“Nothing can compare to the freshness of the produce we get from the gar-den,” explains Chef Brian, who has been with the Lodge since 2013, bringing with him much culinary experience from the East Coast and Bay area. “I want our guests to be completely satisfied when they leave the restaurant. I want them to eat something that they cannot get anywhere else.”

The grounds are surrounded by huge pine trees with echoes of the babbling creek meandering through. Beautiful flowers and luscious greenery are every-where. A stroll around the property uncovers a wooden walking bridge, a chicken coop, a greenhouse, a wonderful fruit orchard, a yoga pavilion, a clay tennis court, a massage cabin and a few designated areas with benches and picnic tables. Each whimsical cabin has a charm of its own, and the all-inclu-sive rate includes tea at 4 p.m., cocktails at 6 p.m., a gourmet dinner at 7 p.m., and delicious made-to-order breakfasts the next day.

Dinners at the lodge are scrumptious, with selections such as sun-dried tomato focaccia, creamy white bean soup with spinach and a mixed green salad for starters; pan-seared parmesan-crusted wild Alaskan halibut with arugula pesto served with ivory and Beluga lentil pilaf, snap peas and baby carrots for an entrée; and home-made strawberry rhubarb pie ala mode for dessert. Compliments to Chef Brian for continuing the resort’s reputation of creating fantastic, memorable meals.

General Manager, Chris Bosselmann, sums up the Garland’s experience simply stating, “This is a place where you can leave the city behind. It won’t take long for you to feel relaxed by the soothing sounds of the creek, the comfortable, private cabins and the excellent, legendary cuisine.

THE CALIFORNIADouble

I immediately got goose bumps all over my body. For those who don’t know, the California Double is an athletic adventure that can only be completed in a few places on earth – surfing

and skiing in the same day. Having been a resident of Southern California for roughly three years, I was envious every time I heard the California Double mentioned, so when I had the opportunity to take part in one I was thrilled!

Myself, along with a handful of media members whose surfing and skiing skills varied from low to intermediate, met in Huntington Beach early one morning. We approached the welcom-ing tents adorned with the logos of the event sponsors, Chevy and Fox Head Sports Inc. While waiting for Hobgood to finish taking photos, everyone shivered their way into wetsuits and picked out a surfboard from the provided lot. The waves were only moderately big that day, at times overhead, but the rip currents and wind made conditions difficult for all but Mr. Hobgood.

I grabbed my board and headed toward the water, pausing a few moments to wait for a set of waves to finish, then quickly paddled out before the next set started closing in on the shore. It took a few moments before I saw a wave that I thought I had enough of a shoulder to ride, but my patience paid off as a promising one started to build. I spun around toward shore and paddled quickly. The wave had a lot of energy. I dropped in heading to my left, hunched over, one hand guiding my outside rail. I performed a few turns up and down the face of the wave and ascended one last time, kicking out at the last second to avoid being buried in a frothy salt-laden wash cycle. With a grin on my face and a racing pulse, I had completed phase one of the California Double.

From Huntington Beach, we drove northeast for two hours toward Snow Summit in the San Bernardino Mountains. The beach gradually gave way to desert topography then pine-populated mountains. We crawled up the switchback roads to an elevation of 6,965 feet, and upon arriving were greeted by the warm sun and a cool breeze. I was more concerned with this portion of the Double as I had never skied before. I picked up my rental gear and struggled to put it on. Luckily, a seasoned vet spotted me wrestling with it and showed me how to put on my boots so that they would be comfortable. I exited the locker room, the gentleman’s earlier comment, “This is a gear-centric sport,” echoing in my head with each awkward, wobbly step I took. Moving with the grace of a toddler, I went over to meet my instructor, Laurie, for a lesson. She approached me and was excited to help me “conquer” skiing, confident that she would be able to help me ski down the mountain...at least once.

We set to the task of learning how to propel forward and make a controlled stop. I pressed on, unashamed of my rigid stance and timidness. After a few short conveyor belt rides and slow descents, Laurie instructed me to head for the ski lift. I entered and exited the lift just fine, following Laurie’s instructions exactly. We made two slow multi-stop runs to the bottom as Laurie gave me pointers from nearby. The park was about to close, so we took one last ride on the lift to the top of the slope. This time Laurie felt confident in my abilities not to kill myself, and exclaimed, “Follow me down this time!” On my final run of the day, I zipped down that bunny slope, triumphantly towering over small children, slowly weaving my way back and forth down the mountain with a grin on my face. Phase two complete!

We sat on the beach as pro-surfer Damien Hobgood stood in front of us with a welcoming grin. The waves behind him were tumultuous, a stark contrast to his demeanor, as he welcomed and invited everyone to complete the California Double.

Hidden away in the Grand Canyon are two breathtaking water-falls. Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls, a pair of tropical-look-ing cascades, are located in a side canyon on the Southern

Rim of the Grand Canyon within the Havasupai Indian Reservation.Marjorie Magnusson, Public Relations Manager and Calendar

Editor for the Arizona Office of Tourism, says although there are several waterfalls within the Grand Canyon, the exceptional beauty of Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls make them stand out.

“I think two of the reasons people are so taken with the falls are because of their sudden appearance and their color. As you hike in, you are still seeing the Grand Canyon walls surrounding you with all their peaches and pinks, red rocks and the layers of time. Then suddenly, the falls appear from the rocks and the color of the water strikes your senses,” she says.

“The water falls into the most vivid blue-green pools you could ever imagine. They are not just a pretty blue-green pool; they are the color of turquoise. They look supernatural. It’s a sight you will never forget.”

While both Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls offer awe-inspiring scenery and a chance to play in the cool water, Magnusson says get-ting there is definitely challenging, and not for everyone.

To reach the falls requires a 10-mile hike through a long, dusty desert-like canyon—then the same 10-mile hike back.

“Havasu Falls is the closest to a campground and is surrounded by multiple pools of water. Mooney Falls is farther down the trail, and to get to the base of the falls, you need to climb down into the canyon,” she says.

“There is a chain and a ladder to help you back your way in – one person at a time. But Mooney is the tallest of the falls, so the lure makes it a favor-ite for those who are not afraid of slippery rocks and a little climbing.”

In order to get the opportunity to make the long trek to the falls, Magnusson says people must first contact the Havasupai tribe for permission.

“To hike into Havasupai requires a reservation,” she says, add-ing that people sharing their beautiful photos of the falls on the Internet has increased the number of visitors. “There are a limited number of visitors the tribe can accommodate, so reservations are imperative. You don’t want to hike into the village only to find you have to hike right back out.”

After securing reservations, Magnusson says people who do not hike on a regular basis should train a bit to prepare themselves for the journey. And although getting there can be difficult, the reward of seeing and experiencing the falls makes it well worth it.

“For the more adventurous, you wade or swim,” she says. “You can swim in the beautiful pools of water, climb behind some of the falls, and some will probably even want to jump in or enjoy some leisurely soaking.”

“Once you are there you just drink it all in. There is something about the sights and the sounds that lift the weight of the world from your shoulders.”

EXECUTIVE CHEF GEORGE HARRISON OF MASTRO’S CITY HALL STEAKHOUSE ARTICLE TERESA K. TRAVERSE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Hot Spot

Steakhouses are a dime a dozen in the Phoenix metro area, but Mastro’s manages to stand out. The upscale setting, VIP clients

and impressive food are just some of the reasons diners have flocked to Mastro’s for years. If you need proof, just ask Executive Chef George Harrison. After stints in catering and at hotel restaurants, he’s been with Mastro’s for nine years. Here, Harrison discusses his back-ground, what makes Mastro’s unique and how to cook the perfect steak.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION

FOR PURSUING A CAREER AS A CHEF?

My family. I’ve always been excited about how a good meal can bring people together and create so much joy. A great meal goes hand-in-hand with great memories, and I love bringing that happiness to people.

HOW DID YOU COME TO YOUR CURRENT ROLE AS EXECUTIVE

CHEF OF MASTRO’S CITY HALL?

By climbing up the culinary ranks. I got my start in the hotel restau-rant of the Park View Hilton in Hartford, Connecticut. I was the ban-quet chef at the Arizona Biltmore for 10 years, but grew tired of the hotel scene. I then moved into catering and eventually became executive chef at Mastro’s City Hall. Nine years later, the upbeat, local commu-nity, high profile environment, and VIP guests still keep me excited.

WHAT MAKES YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THE

CULINARY INDUSTRY?

It’s an exciting business and an ever-changing industry. I love mento-ring young chefs who are getting started. From new trends to products, there is always something to learn.

WHAT MAKES THE MENU AT MASTRO’S UNIQUE?

Mastro’s menu of juicy steaks, seafood, decadent side dishes and our dedication to providing all guests with a VIP experience makes us unique. In addition to our acclaimed cuisine, Mastro’s is known for world-class white glove service, an elegant atmosphere and nightly live entertainment. We’re firmly dedicated to ensuring each visit to Mastro’s provides guests with a truly unforgettable dining experience.

WHAT ARE SOME CUSTOMER FAVORITES AT MASTRO’S?

We’re known for sizzling steaks, filets and bone-in ribeye. Another favorite is our signature seafood tower with freshly shucked oysters, chilled Alaskan King crab legs, lobster and giant shrimp cocktail. They are customized to each guest’s preference and are presented in a dramatic

cloud of dry ice so they are eye-catching for the dining room. The lobster mashed potatoes are also among the top favorites. For dessert, our signa-ture warm butter cake is beloved by our guests—served a la mode, it’s the perfect way to end a dining experience at Mastro’s on a sweet note.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL FAVORITE DISHES?

I love a great steak. It’s hard to choose, but I’d have to go with the New York Steak as a favorite.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT STEAK?

Two things make the perfect steak: the cut and sear. It’s best to look for a good cut with lots of marbling – not excessive fat, just marble. It’s also important to sear at a high heat and let the meat speak for itself by adding a simple seasoning – salt and pepper.

Parting Thoughts

The year was 1974. The location was our living room, on a warm and muggy New Jersey day. Having just finished the second

grade, I was ready to settle in for a few carefree months of watching cartoons, running through the sprinklers and visiting the local com-munity pool, when my parents made a major announcement: We were moving to Oregon.

For some reason, the idea of packing up and relocating over 3,000 miles away didn’t faze me too much. In addition to liking the idea of living close to my paternal grandparents in Oregon, I was especially excited about my parents’ plans to get us there: a cross-country road trip.

I remember them showing me the map of our upcoming trip from the east coast to the west coast. While a moving van would take the majority of our possessions, we would pack a few suitcases, some snacks and our beloved family dog into our trusty VW Squareback and head west on our own.

What I didn’t know at the time was that my mom—a native of New York City who hadn’t spent a lot of time riding in cars over the years—had made it clear that she had no intention of subjecting us to endless days of traveling.

So while my dad might have been happy with getting the cross-country trip over within a few marathon days of driving, he acquiesced to my mom’s wishes and agreed to make each day’s drive no longer than around 300 miles.

In early July, we watched as the moving van drove away from our New Jersey apartment building. Then, we finished packing the VW and began the long 10-day drive to our new home.

From the backseat I sat transfixed, amazed by the country’s changing scenery. Although it’s been over 40 years since we made our cross-country drive, I can still picture the verdant landscape of Indiana, remember how hot it was in Illinois, and when we turned our VW north and headed into Wisconsin, how enchanted we were by the capital city of Madison. In fact, we loved Madison so much that we stayed there an extra night, giving my dad a much-needed break from driving.

Our family albums are filled with photos of me smiling with the huge geyser Old Faithful in the background at Yellowstone Park, the stoic faces of four Presidents carved into Mount Rushmore, and a family picnic when we visited relatives in Idaho.

In mid-July, we reached our new home in Oregon. To make sure it was ready for his granddaughter, my grandfather had painted my bedroom light pink and installed a swing set in the backyard.

While many people would understandably want to make a cross-country drive go as quickly as possible, I’m still glad my par-ents decided to stretch it out. By doing so, they turned what could have been a tedious trip into a lifelong memory-filled adventure, complete with dog-friendly motels, trips to National Parks, stops to visit family and the chance to see a lot of what makes our country such a beautiful and interesting place.
