Author Stephen Covey tells about an expedition where several people were furiously hacking their way through a thick jungle — machete in hand. At one point, someone climbed a tree and said, “Wait a minute, wrong jungle!” The people on the ground kept right on hacking. “Who cares, we’re making good time.”

When you are hacking your way through work deadlines, family activities, relational issues, financial pressures, and physical problems, you don’t have time to stop and look up. It’s a jungle out there. You must keep flailing away, even if you’ve lost track of your direction.

Whenever life feels like that, you’ve lost something crucial to the expedition: balance. Somehow the pace of life has overtaken the grace of life. In the quest to get things done, everything has been reduced to a job, and you catch yourself saying under your breath, “It just doesn’t feel fun anymore.”

That’s when it’s time to climb a tree. Erin Callan went on a climb when she realized her job had taken over her life. A former CFO at Lehman Brothers, Callan described her jungle in a New York Times op-ed.

I didn’t start out with the goal of devoting all of myself to my job. It crept in overtime.Eachyearthatwentby,slightmodificationsbecamethenewnormal. First, I spent a half-hour on Sunday organizing my email, to-do list, and calendar to make Monday morning easier. Then I was working a few hours on Sunday, then all day. My boundaries slipped away until work was all that was left.

At some point, we all need to put the machete down, rise above our current situation, and take a broad view. Our lives were never meant to be reduced to our jobs or a series of tasks. God created us to be playful, creative, loving, and purposeful. These attributes flourish when spread across a variety of areas — spiritual, physical, intellectual, and relational. If all we do is hack away, we lose the beautiful balance God designed for our lives.

If you or someone you know feels overworked, over-stimulated, or over-committed, you’re going to love the message series this July. Together, let’s climb a tree and discover the right jungle.

With Grace,

Prayer Retreat at the Chiara CenterSATURDAY, JULY 16, AT 1:00-4:30pm

This is an opportunity for solitude, to calm your spirit and satisfy your soul. There are no special qualifications or minimum age required, only the desire to have a conversation with God. You may want to walk the beautiful grounds or sit quietly in a peaceful setting. If you’ve been trying to hear from God about a topic in your life, this just might be the opportunity you need. We will gather for a brief orientation at 1:00pm and come together again for a quick recap before 4:30pm. There is no cost. A free will offering will be received. The Chiara Center is located at 4875 LaVerna Road on the northeast side of Springfield. For more information, contact Sharon Sweeney at [email protected] or 793-9760 x131.

GENEROSITYDuring Adventure Bible Camp, we had a friendly

competition to see whether the boys or the

girls would bring in the most money for the

Clean Water Project (the boys won!). The kids

collected $2,478.23! That means nearly 2,500

people will have clean water because of the

generosity of our children! In addition, they

collected items

for health kits to

be handed out at

the Body & Soul

Wellness Fair

and put the kits

together with

their families

at the end

of ABC.

Renewing The SoulForthelastfewyears, ourchurchleadershiphasofferedmea two-week study break in the summer. It provides a set-aside timetoread, reflect, pray, andprepareforthecomingministryyear. Those weeks have been a soul saver. However, after nearly 9 years of serving this incredible congregation, I have sensed the need for a longer time away to experience a deeper renewal. OurStaffParishRelationsCommitteeandourAdministrativeBoard have graciously approved a two-month Renewal Leave. The leave will begin on Sunday, July 17 and will end on Tuesday, September 20. Duringthistime,Iwillbeoutoftheofficeandawayfromemail, although I will be back for the Global Leadership Summit we are hosting this year on August 11-12. A number of people are considering how they can step up to help things run smoothly. We are very blessed to have so many dedicated servant leaders. Please know how deeply grateful I am for the gift of this Renewal Leave and for those who have graciously agreed to carry a larger load to make it possible. Gratefully Yours,

I LL INOIS GREAT R IVERS ANNUAL CONFERENCE RECAP“The Fields are Ripe for the Harvest” was the theme for the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference on June 8-11, 2016 at the Peoria Civic Center. This year’s conference celebrated the 46 years of ministry of Bishop Jonathan D. Keaton, who will be retiring Aug. 31 after 20 years as bishop in the North Central Jurisdiction and 4 years in our Conference.

As part of the celebration of Keaton’s ministry, the conference is completing a $1 million “Making Dreams Possible Scholarship” campaign for Africa University, which has been named the Bishop Jonathan and Mrs. Beverly Keaton Endowment funded by the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. With full endowment, eight scholarships will be given to AU students annually into perpetuity. Through generous offerings at Annual Conference, the campaign is just $71,000 shy of its goal.

The Conference also overwhelmingly approved a $2.5 million campaign to endow the spiritual life programs of the conference’s five child-serving ministries – The Baby Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham Children’s Home, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House and the United Methodist Children’s Home. The campaign will run from Jan. 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2019. The five agencies have had to rely upon benevolent giving as the Illinois General Assembly has failed to pass a budget since July 2014, causing many agencies to lay off personnel as they await payment from the state.

The conference laity collected $4,943 for the John Kofi Asmah School in Liberia. The school, located in West Point section of Monrovia, was built by IGRC laity and annual offerings have been taken to furnish the building since its opening in 2011.

Other special offerings included $5,938 for the 2017 Holy Land Pilgrimage for this year’s newly-ordained pastors and $7,164 for the Tom Brown Scholarship at Wiley College.

Four elders were ordained and one associate member was approved. Eight provisional elders and one provisional deacon were commissioned. One deaconess was consecrated through United Methodist Women.

A total of 33 pastors with a combined service of 959.75 years retired. Membership of the 839 UM churches in the southern three-fourths of Illinois stands at 127,052 in 2015, down 2,535 from 2014. Worship attendance stands at 57,620, down 1,580. Church school attendance stands at 18,121, down 431. Professions or reaffirmations of faith for 2015 is 1,948, up 33.

NEW FACILITIES MANAGER

Please welcome Dennie Canny as Springfield First’s part-time Facilities Manager! He will be working closely with Lana Salomonson, Executive Director, to keep the facility in tip-top shape. He and his wife Margie have been members at SFUMC since 1998. They usually attend the Saturday evening service.

Dennie’s daughter Rachel and her husband John Coleman are members here too, along with their daughter Haddie. Dennie’s son Ryan and his wife Michelle live in St. Peter’s, Missouri. Dennie is a retired high school principal from Rochester. He also has been a principal at Litchfield High School. He has a master’s degree in educational administration from UIS. He enjoys golfing, Cardinal baseball (Lana is trying to convert him to be a Cubs fan), and spending time with his granddaughter.
