up racing in 8 different classes. As anybody who has put on a big regatta knows, this is a big undertaking (especially given the remoteness of the site) only 24 days to go until the first start. As Dennis says……“See you in the dirt”

CALIFORNIA – To quote Chris Deaver, “the Stockton YC was overrun with SCYC members” for the Delta Ditch regatta this month. Many members switched boats and raced up the Sacramento river including; Chris Deaver on the J90 Ragtime; Mark and Holly Shipper, Todd Bredehoft with Matthew Coale, on their boat Stretch, 3rd in their fleet; Tyler Karaszewski on his J-70 Spitfire; Zhenya Kirueshkin-Stepanoff on his boat Insolent Minx; and Ian Klitza on the express 27 Get Happy, whose team finished 1st in class. On their Moore’s were; Nancy Rinkardt and Mike Evans on Tonopah Low with Dave Hopkins and Craig Mac-beth; Sean McBurney on Paddy Wagon; Sydnie Moore on Nobody’s Girl; Scott Nelson on Lowly Worm with Brent Rhune, Joe Crum and John Curren; Bruce Donald on Cadenza; and David Pease on Tranya. On the SC 27’s, Craig Smith on Don Quixote, 2nd in class; Magdalena Naef on Magic with Mark Voropay, 3rd in class; Jon Kim on Your X with Gary Schwher; Evan Diola on Mistress Quickly with Jot Fisher-Smith; Brian Piazza on Dynaflow with Liz Kroft and Rachael Domezio; and Mike Irish with on Shibumi. I’m sure I didn’t get every member who raced….but send me their names and we’ll get ‘em in next time! Brent Rhune had a second stop in Long Beach this month, where he was racing on the Farr 40 Skian Dhu. While they finished in mid pack, racing in Long Beach is always a fun time. If you have info on where club members are racing, please feel free to pass along details to [email protected].

Vice Commodore’s Report

Ahoy sailors and sailor-ettes! It’s been another busy month! I’m sure you’ve noticed we are continu-ing to work through our 2014 house projects and the Club is looking pretty good, thanks to the efforts of many. We are continuing to work through our 2014 house projects. The oak trees have been given a little haircut, and we’ve replaced their lighting. The tram has been down for annual inspection and maintenance (though it will be back in service by the time you read this) and we took advantage of this “down time” to clear out the jungle that had grown up under the tracks (a big thanks to Martin Valdivia). More thanks to Bret Gripenstraw and friends for a new paint job on our boat hoist! And also to Matthew Coale for some impromptu hedge trimming at the bottom of the stairs. Next up on our to-do list will be a good scrub and seal for the upper deck (we’ll be organizing a volunteer squad), our continuing effort to spruce up the down-stairs room, and (<gulp>) some preliminary musings regarding a long overdue kitchen remodel. On a more serious note, you’ve probably noticed that our rainfall levels are approaching Saharan levels, so please keep up the good work on limiting water use at our Club. We wouldn’t want to run out of ice cubes at the bar now, would we? Moving right along, our annual Club “roster and handbook” will be out very soon, and it’s not too late to let Greg know about any changes to your official

information (such as trading in your San-tana 22 for a Cigarette Boat named “Get Outta Da Way” or of-ficially changing your name to “Binky”). For those of you interested in meeting sailors from other nearby clubs, the Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Association (“PICYA”) is having a mini-summit at the Elkhorn Yacht Club on Saturday, July 26. There may be a few more visitors than

usual around our Club for that Friday dinner or over the weekend, so please make it a point to extend a warm welcome to all. Further information about the summit is available at www.picya.org. And then there’s my own cruise. Somehow, despite some “iffy” weather, the utter lack of water in the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway, a busted alternator, a midnight crawl through the shallows around Atlantic City in the dead of night, our little ship “Syren” success-fully made it from Annapolis to New York City. It was a great experience, and I thank my able crew, our own George Kennedy, without whose lookout duties (“you see that ferry boat, right?”) and indispensable moral support we never would have made it. Next stop: Long Island Sound, the Vineyard, and points north.

So the summer is in its full glory, and if you haven’t been by the Club lately, you are really missing it. Morning, noon and night, it’s the best place to be, and we are all so very fortunate to live in such a beau-tiful place. Come on down and enjoy our wonderful Club.

The Crab Feed on June 7 was a rousing suc-cess. Ninety people, plus volunteers has a great time. The food was delicious, and there was plenty of it. This could not happen without the following vol-unteers. Lauren Linkemyer, Mark Ellis, Barbara Booth, Rick Linkemyer, Fred Molnar, Chris Lash, Becky, Dana & Steve Shoemaker, Don Lea, Sharon Reeves, Mark Langer, Mary Larkin-Berlinski, Ste-fan Berlinski, Lois Van Buren, Jim Ransom, Trudy Ransom, Ashley Zannanovich, Charles Murray, Hilda Murray, Greg Haws, and finally but not least Jennifer Whall. I think there was another. My apolo-gies for not getting the name written down. We hope to see all at the lobster feed in the fall. On Father’s Day we were treated to a scrump-tious buffet by KISS Catering. The attendance was very good. We missed all those who could not come. Judging from the laughter and conversation a good time was had by all. July 12 will be the 5th Annual Rib Cook-Off. So dust of your BBQ gloves and be a contestant or make a reservation and taste all the winners. Judges still needed. On Sunday July 27 there will be an informal potluck dinner. Bring a dish to share and your family and friends for a casual night of fun and good compa-

ny. Not sure what to bring? Anything but the kitchen sink we just want you. On August 2 there will be our annual Luau with music, dancing and delectable foods. Sign up early for this one. August 7th is the 20th Annual Golf Tournament at Boulder Creek. Everyone says this is a fun and chal-lenging event so don’t let the 20th slip by without being a participant. Not very good? No worries, the “blind bogey” scoring system is in effect to level out the play-ing field. Mark your calendars now!

Junior Spaghetti Feed & 90/10 Raffle

The third time’s a Charm!Planning the Spaghetti Feed, for the third year,

was truly a charm! Lots of key people, who had vol-unteered in previous years, stepped up again, and with gusto! Linda Moore and I spent a foggy Aptos morning recruiting new members of the Junior Program to help out. The good news? Lots of new Junior Families agreed to participate!

The Thursday before the Feed, Linda and I went shopping for great quantities of non-perishable ingredients from Costco. Thankfully we got some help from my son Morgan Miller, because it took strong arms and a good back to get those heavy ingredients to the Activities Room.

At 8 am on the day of the event, Pasta Cook extraordinaire, Royce Fletcher, met Ron Salado to pass on the knowledge of cooking pasta perfectly. The Sauce and Salad team arrived before 10 am to begin their task. On the Sauce team was Dick McCartney

and his son Luke. They worked together all day and into the evening, creating the perfect sauce for 100 guests, including a vegetarian version. On the Salad team were

Julie Edwards,James Arnerich, Tai Li Harrill, Andrea Miller (kneeling), Luke McCartney, Bob Barker

and Mary McKinnon Tara

Barbara Lawrence, David Pease and his wife Mimi Herrera-Pease. Long time kitchen staffer Julie Edwards scooped spaghetti all night long! That’s one hot job, really! James Arnerich and Tai Li Harrill found them-selves on the evening Salad staff. They were meticulous in making sure each serving looked delicious AND included a sprig of broccoli. The whole crew was in the kitchen all day, and through the evening too. I truly ap-preciate the dedication and hard work they contributed to make the Spaghetti Feed a success.

Even my car benefited from running errands on the day of the event! Can you imagine how wonder-ful 32 loaves of Gayle’s garlic francese bread smells? It was a warm day, there is still a delicious lingering scent…. Thank you Beers Family! Toasting bread for the third year in a row, (and perhaps more than that)--a big Thank You goes to Bob Barker for tirelessly insur-ing perfection! What a tasty job! The early afternoon set-up crew arrived around 4pm to help turn SCYC into a colorful Italian restaurant. Straw Chianti bottles, flowers and red placemats livened up the room.

The Clubhouse was a hive of conversation and excitement as the One Design Racers recapped their day and sampled garlic bread bites. Many thanks to De Schuyler, Barbara Booth and Chris Hoffman for making sure the sailors knew about our event and so they could enjoy the evening with us.

Kim Arnerich sold dinner tickets and directed the Junior serving team including Morgan Miller, Charlotte Lenz, Spencer Carson, Julian Martinez, Talia Rozenbaum, Chloe and JT Long, Alyssa Meyer, Sam Nelson and many more.

Kristen Lenz was the organizing driver behind the 90/10 Raffle again this year—for which we are very grateful. This is the fifth year that we have been includ-ing a 90/10 raffle with our Spaghetti Feed. We are thrilled that this year was even more successful than in

the past, thanks to the fantastic efforts of junior sailors for selling tickets. We sold over 1,000 tickets this year and raised $2,700 for the Junior Board. Staff Commo-dore Charlie Roskosz was (literally) shoulder-tapped to draw the winning ticket—Lee Faraola’s, purchased from his son, Lee (who also sold the most tickets of all the Juniors). A huge thank you to everyone who bought tickets to support our junior program!

I hope you enjoyed the entertainment and a delicious meal! Until next year,

Best regards, Andrea MillerCo-Scholastic Director and Spaghetti Feed Chairperson

Cruising News On June 14th we had a great dock party followed up with a beautiful full moon sail. The winds were light but not too light and the skies clear making for a great event. Coming up is our 4th of July set of events which are as follows: Stillwater Cove – Sat., June 28 – Mon., June 30th Steve Smardan and I are sailing to Stillwater Cove. The idea is to Sail over on Saturday, Hang out all day Sunday and Sail to Monterey on Monday. My hope is to: Go out to a nice dinner, Go for a walk into Carmel, Have a bonfire at the beach and lots more!!!!! If you are interested in joining please contact Steve at ‘[email protected]’ Monterey - Monday June 30th – Sunday July 6th. Several boats are sailing to Monterey between June 30th and July 6th. We are having a cocktail party on Diver Down on Thursday evening July 3rd. 4th of July Raft Up – In Santa Cruz In addition to the Massive Monterey Migration (described above) we are also having a 4th of July raft up. Onward will be the anchor boat. So there will be plenty of space for folks to hang out and a head available!! On-

ward is planning on shoving off at 6:30. So the raft up will be from 7:00 – 10:00. The Idea is to have a raft up before sunset, and hang out and watch all the crazy fireworks on the beach. We will anchor on the board-walk side of the wharf pretty close (but not too close) to the wharf and the swim buoys. If you are interested in any of this please let me know, and we will see how we can best get you plugged in!!!!! We also have our upcoming July Full Moon Sail on Saturday July 12 and our famous Wharf to Wharf Raft up in Capitola on Saturday July 26th. The Wharf to Wharf Raft up in Capitola is a pre Wharf to Wharf 10K Race party with one goal being that people can leave their boats in Capitola the night before. Then after running the Wharf to Wharf 10K on Sunday people can sail back to Santa Cruz and avoid all the lines for busses etc. The Raft up is in Capitola on July 26th from 1:00 – 5:00. If you are running the Wharf to Wharf 10K race and would like a ride via boat back to Santa Cruz let me know. Jason [email protected] Director

RBOC Supporting Federal Bills to Designate Delta National Heritage Area

RBOC in conjunction with our federal gov-ernment relations partners at BoatUS is supporting pending federal legislation S.228 (Feinstein) and H.R. 1004 (Garamendi) – The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area Establishment Act. This legislation would designate the Sacramento-San Joa-quin Delta as the first National Heritage Area (NHA) in the State of California. RBOC representatives had been involved in the public process to develop the Delta Protection Commission’s NHA Feasibility Study and applaud the Commission for the extensive public involvement and engagement efforts which had been undertaken. RBOC firmly believes that this project is closely aligned with our principles to protect and enhance the recreation and boating interests of Cali-fornia including the Delta. Recreational Boaters of California gives full support for the NHA designation and looks forward to future collaborative planning and implementation.

My Wife’s First Bareboat Charter

I had been on a bareboat charter and wanted to share the experience with my wife. The problem was: my wife hates bashing to weather. After exploring the options, we decided on a charter from St Vincent to Union Island during the Christmas Holiday. This was a one way charter to avoid pounding into the waves. We made the mistake of flying LIAT airlines to get to the Grenadines, with our first stop in Barbados for a one night layover on our way to St Vincent. We didn’t know, but were soon to find out what LIAT stood for. There were two meanings; LIAT= Leave Island Any Time and LIAT= Luggage In Another Terminal. At the terminal the next morning on the way from Barbados to St Vincent, we were horrified to find the workers on strike and riots at the airport. We finally made it to St Vincent and settled into the Caribbean rhythm. We checked into the motel and waited for the second definition of LIAT. The luggage finally arrived a day later. Meanwhile we sat through the chart brief-ing and were assigned our boat: Pelican Pete a Jenneau 36. In the briefing they advised us that the dinghy motor had to be loaded onto the boat each night to inhibit thieves. Alas, even as our luggage had arrived and we were ready to go, Pelican Pete needed a new radio. We patiently waited while it was installed.

We finally set off for Admiralty Bay in Bequia. As we entered the bay we found that the ARC had just arrived from Europe. There was a veritable flotilla of boats in Ad-miralty Bay. We found a place to anchor among the 200 or so other boats. We deployed anchor, and backed down on it. When I dove on the anchor, I was horrified to find that the Bruce had one corner hung on a rock. We set the anchor again and found sand this time. We had a great time in Admiralty Bay, shopping in the market and enjoying Christmas in the tropics: Steel

band performers playing with Santa Hats on. We had a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner at Mac’s Pizza enjoying their specialty: Lobster pizza. You couldn’t see the sauce for the lobster on the pizza. We took a day trip to the other side of the island and enjoyed the ambiance at the Friendship Bay resort. The next day we weighed anchor and set for the island of Mustique. There is a shoal just in front of the harbor that manages to snag many a boat. Some-how we missed it even though it was poorly marked and enjoyed an evening and lunch at Basils restaurant. Our next stop after the Grenadines was the is-land of Mayreau. We were early to arrive and set our hook in the middle of Saline Bay. Right after we set anchor, a boat arrived and the boat boys asked “How many do you want?” We looked and the bottom of their boat was covered with live lobsters. We bought three and put them on ice. We motored in and walked up the hill to find more ice, but instead found “Den-nis’s Hideaway”. This is a delightful place with a bar overlooking Union Island. There was also a pool that for a small fee you could take a swim. We finally got our ice and returned to our boat for a lobster barbecue dinner. Early the next morning we set off for the

Grenadines. We enjoyed exploring the Island and snor-keling with the Turtles. After spending a relaxing day enjoying the Grenadines, we set off for our evening des-tination: Chisholm Cay on Union Island. We arrived late in the evening to find a full anchorage. There were pe-riodic winds blowing down from the hills gusting to 30 knots so we needed a good place to set a proper anchor. After multiple attempts to set anchor, we settled on a

Page 10: July 2014 edited - Santa Cruz Yacht Clubclub.scyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/July-2014.pdf · 2014. 7. 7. · 3 JulY 2014 Santa Cruz YaCht Club Spinnaker Sheet usual around our

spot further from the other boats. You could see through the crystal clear water to see patches of sand surrounded by sea grass. We set the anchor and backed down on it hard. When I dove on it, I couldn’t believe the Bruce only had one corner tucked into the sand. It was getting dark quickly, so I went to the boat and got the secondary anchor, a Fortress and set it right over the Bruce, where I knew there was sand. I tightened the rode and backed down again. By this time it was dark. I took LOP’s on several lights and boats in the bay to make certain we were not drifting in the still intermittent 30 knot winds. I also set waypoints to Clinton Harbor in case our two anchors failed. The anchors held through the night and we set for Clinton Harbor the next morning. Clinton Harbor is a delightful place. I was sur-prised that everyone there tied up Mediterranean style, stern to the pier. I did not want to attempt this with the three fenders we had and a full pier. We accepted the offer for a mooring ball in the harbor. This was perfect except we were awakened at 5am the next morning as a squall blew through, two French boats on one mooring ball drifted onto us and insisted that we were drifting onto them.... even though the wind was to their back! After dealing with this ordeal we loaded our luggage into the Dingy and schlepped it all to the airport for the flight back to St Vincent. As I looked out the airplane window, I was pleased we were not beating to weather in the nasty squall that had settled on the area. The weather was so bad at the St Vincent airport that the pilots had to circle while the squall passed. It was a white knuckle ride, but not nearly as bad as it would have been sailing back. My wife was sold on chartering. In one week, we never raised the main, only unfurling the jib for off wind sailing. She was so enamored that a couple of years later when we went to Australia, she suggested a bare-boat charter in the Whitsunday Islands.
