MAD Academy WokingKids, music and masses of movement – it’s a winning combination! Children love to be physical and let off steam. So it’s not surprising that in MAD Academy’s high energy music and movement classes, everyone, from babies to preschool children (and their parents!), get active and have fun. As well as funky songs, instruments, and musical games, classes are packed with specially choreographed dance routines and exciting props designed to develop motor skills.’ With increasingly sedentary lifestyles, MAD Academy classes are a great way to promote active habits from the very start. ‘Our approach is energetic and free-spirited, which children relish – it’s like a party every week!’ For more information call Annette on 01252 517670 or visit the website at www.madacademy.com. Annette will be offering free taster classes in August at the following venues; Addlestone Community Centre, Cornerstone Centre West Byfleet, St Mary’s Church Byfleet and The Sea Cadet Centre Goldsworth Park, Woking. As food prices continue to rise around the world, it’s a sobering thought to know that UK families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food.We also know that cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time or your kids don’t always want to eat what you’ve cooked for them.
So to help you waste less, Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign provides helpful tips on how to save more and waste less, but for the food waste you can’t avoid, you can use your kerbside food waste collection service. By collecting food separately from general waste it can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way and turned into fertiliser for use on farms.
Taking just one small step to reduce food
environment and save you money too. We hope our tips will inspire you to take that step.
It pays to plan Before you do your next big shop, check what you have left, be creative and make a meal planner for the week, so you only buy what you need.
Perfect portions Weighing and measuring food is the best way to cook perfect portions. To help, use mugs, spoons, spaghetti measures or weighing scales so that you can work out just the right amount of food to cook for your family.
Lovely leftovers If you’ve cooked too much, cool your leftovers as soon as possible, store in the fridge and eat within 2 days, or freeze them for another time. You could try to use the leftovers for another meal; take a look at what you already have in your kitchen to help.
Store food properly Correct storage means your food could live for extra days, weeks or even months. Keep the fridge below 5°C and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.
Use by These dates are for safety and must be followed correctly; don’t use any food after the end of the ‘use by’ date, even if
it after this date could put your health at risk. To extend the life of food beyond this date, freeze it before the date, defrost when needed and use within 24 hours.
Best before These dates refer to quality not to food safety; foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after this date (except for eggs), but they may no longer be at their best.
What a wasteResearch indicates that Surrey residents produce about 80,000 tonnes of food waste every year, with treatment and disposal costs in the region of £6.7 million. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage that goes to waste when we throw away good food.
For advice on planning your shopping, portion control, recipe ideas and more, visitwww.lovefoodsurrey.com where you can also sign up to our regular e-newsletter.

2012 is proving to be a very eventful year. The Queen has celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, London is hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we at White Lodge Centre are proudly celebrating our 50th anniversary!
Although we received charitable status in 1962, White Lodge Centre’s history dates back to the early 1950’s when a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy set up a small treatment centre in Worplesdon Village Hall, Surrey. Today we support over 2,000 disabled people and all of their families and carers in Surrey and the surrounding area from our dedicated site in Chertsey.
Aside from our annual calendar of fundraising events, we are hosting specific 50th anniversary celebration events. These include a family fun day on 24th June where all families and staff who have been involved with White Lodge Centre over the years are warmly invited to join in the celebrations, and a celebration of White Lodge Centre concert which is being held at St James’ Church in Weybridge on 2nd November.

Safe Treatments for Baby & Mum-2-BeNicholas J Oram qualified in 1994 with a BSc in Chiropractic and is the owner of Sunbury Chiropractic Centre. He also works alongside Drs Christine Gardiner and Mumuksh Patel at the Glebe Street G.P. Surgery in Chiswick.
Chiropractic and cranial treatment is a very gentle and safe treatment which can be given to pregnant Mums up to the day of delivery for conditions e.g. back ache. Treatment for a newborn from as young as a day old involves gentle massage and muscular releases together with cranial work so gentle that when babies arrive asleep, they often don’t wake up during the treatment.
Nick has a great deal of personal experience having treated all of his three young children, the first of whom was a forceps delivery and needed regular care through infancy and the younger two for general health and well being.

Kiddiwinks Child Care has been providing high quality full and part day-care for children aged from 3 months to 5 years for over 14 years. The nursery is conveniently situated mid-way between Woking and West Byfleet stations and has on-site parking. We operate a biometric door access system for parents to facilitate drop off and pick up times.
The nursery is open 7.30am to 6.00pm for 51 weeks of the year to meet the needs of working parents. We also offer morning and afternoon sessions, and the Early Years Free Entitlement sessions for children aged 3 and over each term-time morning. Please contact us to check current availability.
As well as a genuine love of children, all our staff have a child care qualification, plus first aid and child protection training. Several staff have been with us for many years looking after 2nd/3rd children from the same families.
Our meals are freshly prepared and cooked on the premises daily. We provide a well-balanced menu for breakfast, lunch and tea, as well as healthy snacks and drinks.
The children spend time outside each day in one of our garden areas. Inside and out, they take part in a wide range of activities planned to meet each child’s individual needs and interests, as required by the Early Years Foundation Stage.

A private company proposes a gasification incinerator in a Greenbelt area just off Byfleet Road with an 80 ft chimney.
As long as you are downwind of this incinerator, you risk inhaling carcinogenic emissions. The fumes billowing out of the 80 foot high chimney stack are just the tip of this poisonous iceberg.
These fumes will emit a cocktail of highly dangerous toxins including dioxins and heavy metals. These poisonous particles are highly damaging to health with proven links to cancers like leukemia.
Act now if you want to stop this incinerator being built by visiting
The summer holidays are on the way…..offering children a great time to relax and have a break from the routines of schoolwork, perhaps also to spend time with friends and family, to visit new places, to discover or rediscover interests, to try out all sorts of activities. Of course parents want their children to have a rest from school and to enjoy doing other things, but they may also harbour a concern that children should be undertaking something more formal. And after six weeks away from school, it is possible to have slipped back in learning – ask any primary teacher. But how can you make sure that your child is still learning without alienating them and producing stress all round? Well, it is possible to combine the two in a way that is stress-free and actually enjoyable!
One of the most valuable things you can do is to focus on reading. For some children, the prospect of endless days when they can read and read without interruption is so enticing. However, this is not the case for others – they may be struggling with reading and so avoid it if they can, or they may have so many other things they need to be doing that it is not high on their list of priorities. If this is the case, offer time when you can read together, and mean ‘together’! Don’t be afraid of encouraging your child’s choice of reading matter…..a football magazine, a comic, a book that has been read before and may seem easy. This is still reading after all and the ultimate objective is to get them choosing to read and enjoying the experience. Perhaps you can read a page or section alternately with your child, or if they are reluctant, forego any expectation and let them chip in when they fancy. Even if they are not ‘reading’ at all, you can both enjoy the experience of sharing a book – you reading and them looking! Whilst on the subject of you reading, letting them see you read for all manner of purposes, including pleasure of course, is a subtle but valuable way of driving home the message that reading is great and is useful throughout life.
So many other activities can involve reading and/or writing; how about planning a cooking session? Organising a menu or dish, researching a recipe, writing a shopping list, searching out the ingredients in the shop, following the recipe in the kitchen……so many opportunities for reading (and for maths!) And to end up eating the result – what an ideal way to discover the benefits of reading!
Written by recently retired headteacher of a Surrey Primary School, now volunteering for Familyline charity.
Keep them reading in the summer

KEEP YOUR FAMILY ACTIVE THIS SUMMERIf you are looking for ways to spend more time with the family and keep active this summer, then look no further than the wide range of activities on offer at your local leisure centre.
Both centres run family focussed activities throughout the summer, from a family swim to learning a new sport, so there is something for all the family to enjoy, whatever their age or ability. In the pool, there are a range of different swim sessions and activities that are designed to keep the whole family active whilst enjoying the water, such as fun inflatable sessions. Swimming is also one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy as it uses most of the muscles in your body and exercises the most important of them all, your heart. Swimming is easier on your joints too, so it offers a great alternative to a workout in the gym or a high impact exercise class.Everyone Active also runs an award-winning swimming lesson programme for children as young as 5 months old. Swimming is a fantastic, healthy and fun activity which can be enjoyed by all ages for its numerous health and well-being benefits and children should be encouraged to learn this essential life skill from as early as possible in life. Don’t let your child be at risk near water, get your children into swimming and help them to feel confident in and around water. If you would rather take part in activity out of the water, there is a wide range of activities available, including sports sessions, group exercise classes such as Zumba and Body Pump and the modern fitness suites.Next time you are in Staines or Sunbury call in to the leisure centre to find out what is on offer.
