To Our Guests:Welcome to Cityview. We are glad that you’re here.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.
For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger.
Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).
Community Life:Before the ServiceEach week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary.
Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP
Let him who until now has had the privilege of living a common Christian life with other Christians praise God’s grace from the bottom of his heart. Let him thank God on his knees and declare: It is grace, nothing but grace, that we are allowed to live in community with Christian brethren.
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The Christian community is the beginning and sign of God’s coming world – and no more so than when we eat together. Our meals are a foretaste of the future messianic banquet. Our meals reveal the identity of Jesus. Our meals are a proclamation and demonstration of God’s good news.

God Calls Us
Call to Worship* — from Psalm 146Praise the Lord!
Our souls praise you, O Lord. We will sing praises to you as long as we live.We hope and trust in you, O God, who created the world and everything it.
You were a faithful God to your people and you remain unchanging and faithful.
You uphold those of us who are weighed down with the cares of this world. You feed those who are hungry with the bread of life.
You set prisoners free with the assurance that their sins are forgiven. You give sight of understanding to those who are blind in their sin.
You are a father to the orphaned and a comforter to the widowed. You lift up those who are bowed down, and you love those who are righteous.

Prayer of Approach — from 1 Corinthians 12Lord Jesus, you are our living head. Teach us to be your body here on earth— your hands, your feet, your eyes, and your compassionate heart. Lord, send the impulses of your love into the sinews of this church. May your will and thoughts direct us. Let your hands, through our hands, supply food for our neighbors’ hunger. Let children come and hear your voice, as they cling to you. Without you as our head, Lord, we are lifeless We wait for your power, your Word, your instruction. Fill us with your life and love, Jesus.
Amen.

Hymn of Confession Lord I Believe
Isaac Wardell & Joseph Pensak
Silent Confession
God Cleanses Us
Call to Confession — Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined.
Prayer of Confession Gracious God, you know what kind of people we are. We judge others harshly and fail to see our own sin. We look with suspicion and fear, and neglect to show hospitality to strangers. We treasure things that are worthless and squander your precious gifts. We withhold the grace and love that you give us so freely. Forgive us. Pour out your grace upon us and heal us of our brokenness. Amen.

Assurance of Grace* — from John 8:12Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” This is the good news.
Thanks be to God!Brothers and sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
We do.
Passing of the Peace — from John 13:34Hear the teaching of Christ: “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” The peace of Christ be with you all.
And also with you!

New Testament Reading — 1 Corinthians 10: 23-31
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
God Speaks To Us
Old Testament Reading — Isaiah 551 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live;and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.6 “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.12 “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace;the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;and it shall make a name for the LORD, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of
conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? 31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Invitation to the Lord’s Table Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration
The Lord be with you.And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ CreedChristian, what do you believe?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Sermon — A Meal of Hope: Meals with JesusLuke Miedema, Campus Minister, RUF Northwestern
Sermon Text — Luke 9:10-17 10 On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have
no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
13
Words of InstitutionWe break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;
Therefore, let us keep the feast.
Distribution of the Bread and the Cup
Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.

FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING: THEOLOGY AT THE COMMONS We invite you to join us this summer to grow in our worship of God through a new opportunity, Faith Seeking Understanding: Theology at the Commons. “Theology at the Commons” offers regular opportunities at Cityview for engaged dialogue about matters of theology and culture.
• Faith and Science: Are They Compatible? Wednesday July 29th, 8:00pm
• Faith and Sexual Ethics: What does the Bible say? Wednesday September 2nd, 8:00pm
OUTREACH TEAM SUNDAY LUNCH - JULY 19 join the Outreach Team in Garfield Park for a special Sunday lunch at Inspiration Kitchen, a wonderful west side restaurant with a mission of providing help for individuals to gain valuable skills and experience that lead to employment in the food service industry. You will not be disappointed. Rides can be arranged as this is not within walking distance.
SUMMER COMMUNITY GROUP - THURSDAYS, 7:00 PM, CITYVIEW COMMONS - 841 W. MONROE Throughout the summer we’ll have one community group meeting regularly at the Commons on Thursday evenings. The group will focus on a 6-week study called The Explicit Gospel. Contact Danny Kim ([email protected]) for more information.
DISCOVER CITYVIEW: MISSION & VALUES NIGHT - SATURDAY, JULY 25, 5:00 - 8:30 PM, CITYVIEW COMMONS - 841 W. MONROE For those interested in membership at Cityview, this is a night to discuss the church’s mission and values and to get answers to any questions prior to formal membership. For more information and to RSVP, contact [email protected].
