The aptly named “Red Eye” Regatta is first on the sailing calendar and was held June. Not only is the water still a bit chilly but the first races of the season requires a re-acquaintance with the boat like remembering how to set it up properly, and the muscle memory of how to stay on the thing during racing action. This did not deter many as we saw the largest catamaran fleet in some time (7 boats!) take to the racecourse, a fantastic turnout. Strong winds forced even the most ardent sailors (no names mentioned…Ken) to stay on shore on the 2nd race day but what a great way to start the season, lets build the fleet back to its 80’s/90’s heyday. Please note that Laser and Opti sailors are always welcome on race weekends, we are more than happy to set a course for you.

Windsurfing Open House: The Victoria Beach Yacht Club will be hosting its First Annual Wind Surf Open House on Saturday July 12th from 11 AM - 4 PM with lessons, demonstrations, and a race in the afternoon (the race is open to all levels of ability or anyone who thinks they can be King of Lake Winnipeg!). Victoria Beach is also home to Former Windsurfer Olympian Murray McCaig and his likewise successful brother Kelly and sister Amy who will be on hand at the Open House. Everyone is welcome. Come on out it will be a fun day!

Sailors Derby: One of our favourite events of the year, the Annual VB Sailors Derby will be held July 13th at noon, all are welcome, it kicks off with a BBQ on the hottest deck in VB followed by a cruise around the bay to various checkpoints. Food, boats as well as prizes for winners are all included. This is a great chance to hop on a boat with an experienced sailor and come along for the ride, or take out the old Laser with the kids.

Also, Junior Racing is happens every Saturday and Sunday, young sailors come and race on a real course supervised by certified instructors. Boats are provided for all who have taken sailing lessons with us in the past. Meet at the club at 9am, some dates are subject to change so text/call Ryan to make sure it is on: 204-291-1775.

Council NewsWith the upcoming Council election you have

the opportunity to cast your vote and have a say in how your municipality is governed. The Advance Poll is this Tuesday, July 15th at two locations, the East Beaches Senior Scene at 3 Ateah Road and at the Municipal Office at 303-960 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. Both polls are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Mail-In ballots are available by contacting the Municipal Office toll free from VB at 1-800-513-3839 or the regular office number is 1-204-774-4263. The office email address is [email protected]. Our website is updated regularly and the address is www.rmofvictoriabeach.ca. Our upcoming Council Meeting is at the East Beaches Senior Scene on Tuesday, July 22 at 7 p.m. If you wish to make a presentation as a delegation you must register with the office 7 days in advance.

Tax and water notices should have been received by all taxpayers by now. If you have not received yours please contact the Municipal Office (see contact information above). Has your address changed or has ownership changed and our office has not been made aware? Please contact the office as soon as possible as your taxes are due in the Municipal Office at 303-960 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg no later than Thursday, July 31st, 2014.

The Financial Plan insert that arrived with your tax bill made note of two large capital projects. The Shoreline Project shows a cost of $5,000,000 and the Public Works Building with a cost of $1,000,000. Both of these costs are high estimates at this point as we still do not have final plans or project costs to base them on. In order to be able to borrow funds for large projects such as these they must be in the Financial Plan. Further, in order to borrow funds, we must do a borrowing by-law and publish a notice of any borrowing in the local newspaper. We hope to have plans finalized and costs detailed for both of these projects soon.

The need for a new Public Works Building has been discussed by this Council and the previous Council. It has continued to be sidelined by other large issues such as the shoreline, our long overdue Development Plan and amalgamation.

We have reached a point of no return where our Public Works Building is concerned. This 40+ year old structure is made out of deteriorating cinder blocks; with no insulation, inefficient and costly heat and air conditioning equipment; no ventilation for equipment repairs; a flat roof that holds more snow and rain than it should ever bear; no washroom or lunch facilities; the middle section has a dirt floor that fills up with rain and snow melt and few pieces of our equipment can be worked on inside whether the temperature is -30 or +30 degrees. Council agreed to move forward with the plans to build a new Public Works Building and the tender package is currently being worked on. This building cannot be repaired or added onto for health, safety and liability reasons. The men and women who work twelve months a year out of this building keeping our municipality running deserve to have a safe, effective and healthy place to work.

Thanks to everyone who has bagged their leaves. With your support of this on-going program Public Works has been able to divert 60 tonnes of leaves from the landfill and recycle them as fill for Tim Flook’s property on Highway #59. Please continue to separate your bagged leaves from garbage bags and small brush for pick up. Public Works also reminds everyone that the garbage bins are for bagged, household garbage only not items that should be taken to the landfill and disposed of properly.

Kathy Brydon deserves a huge thank you for the efforts that she and her husband John put into organizing the Doctor’s Cottage and Clinic on the July long weekend. Kathy shopped for medical supplies and then spent approximately 2 days of her long weekend sorting, shelving and cleaning up. The Medical Clinic at VB is open Sunday and Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 am and again from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The phone number is 204-756-6305. Thanks to Dr. Joan Swain as she completes her shift at the Clinic and welcome to Dr. Garth Campbell who is here from July 13-20.

Thanks for a Job Well Done!On behalf of all the residents of Victoria Beach who are happy

to know that the Victoria Beach Summer Medical Clinic has reopened, I would like to thank those members of the committee who worked hard to make it happen.

I don’t know what part each committee member played in this process, but I do know that in particular, sincere thanks should go to Kathy Brydon, who was very “hands-on” in working to meet the committee objective. Kathy contacted, talked to, and met with doctors. She inventoried the clinic and obtained lists of necessary medical supplies, purchased supplies and stocked the clinic shelves. With volunteer help, she cleaned the doctors’ cottage and clinic extensively, personally laundered linens, and overall, made a special effort to ensure that the cottage and clinic were properly equipped and ready for the summer residents.

Although we hope that meeting the summer doctors is not a necessity for all of us, we would like to extend a warm Victoria Beach welcome to them all.

We appreciate a job well done, and to all who listened to the wishes of the community and made the clinic reopening a reality, thank-you very much!

An attitude of gratitude. It’s something I think most of us continually strive for. To be thankful for the abundance in our lives and to show our gratitude by sharing our gifts with others. At VB, we believe this grateful attitude is often reflected in the countless hours volunteers spend organizing and running special events. For many of them, it may be their way of giving back to the community which has given them, and their families, so much over the years. For newcomers, it may simply be a recognition of all the good work that goes on here and a desire to see it continue. Whatever the reason, we want to express our gratitude to the following people who have contributed, in some way, to the tennis experience during the last two weeks.

Firstly, a big shout out to Gary Wingate at Blue Water Lawn Services for making his power washer available to us during his busy spring season. Access to this machine is instrumental in removing 12 months of grit and grime from our courts and getting them ready for play each year.

Tam Scott, the Club’s maintenance man, quietly goes about watering flowers, cutting grass, cleaning, and maintaining facilities. If you see him in his orange vest, be sure to thank him for providing us with such a beautiful place to relax and play.

Thank you to Pine Greenhouse for donating the flowers for Boris’s barrels and to Michelle Brownell for planting them.

Thanks to Anne Mahon for her generous donation of ten cans of tennis balls. These are much appreciated and will be put to good use during lessons, GVS, and drill sessions.

And finally, many thanks to Nancy Sarchuk and Mike Lodewyks for running a fun-filled afternoon of activities at the annual Girls’ Tennis Day. It’s great to see so many new faces at the courts. And who knows, there may be another Eugenie Bouchard among them!

The number of kids coming out to lessons, clinics, special events, and just to play, seems to grow every year. With this in mind, and the Jr. Tournament just around the bend, we are including an excerpt from Steve Wilkinson’s book, Let Love Serve, on how parents can be a positive influence on their tennis-playing children. Steve was inducted into both the NCAA/ITA Tennis Hall of Fame and the USPTA Hall of Fame this year along with Nick Bollettieri and Vic Braden and he has coached more winning matches than any other coach in NCAA history. His memoir, which focuses on his philosophy of tennis and life, is available for loan at the VB library.

Guidelines for tennis parents (taken from Let Love Serve by Steve Wilkinson)

Following are some guidelines to help parents avoid the pitfalls that create pressure on their children and drive them away from tennis and other sports that they would otherwise enjoy.

1) Be a cheerleader. Keep track of the best points and describe them in detail after the competition. This is most important when your child loses. Losers tend to forget the good points, but they need to be celebrated. They are the building blocks for future performances. If you say “nice job” after a poor, losing performance, your child will dismiss your praise as disingenuous. However, every match has positive elements that should be emphasized.

2) emphasize full effort. The child who continues to try, even when defeat is imminent, is a winner. The child who refuses to quit, even when normal performance skills are lacking, is a champion. The child who has practised faithfully for a contest, especially when sacrifices had to be made, deserves to be praised.

3) Praise good sportsmanship. Again, notice specific things the child has done or said. If the opponent has been a poor sport, and your child has responded with trust and forgiveness, the accomplishment is noteworthy. Good sportsmanship comes more easily when the opponents are good sports and is more challenging when they are not.

4) De-emphasize winning and playing well. These are not within your child’s control. Every competitor wants to win and play well, but this is impossible. For every winner, there is a loser. Humans cannot be at their best every time. When your child focuses on winning or playing well, fear surfaces more frequently. He or she will become nervous and tense, and not play in a confident, relaxed manner.

5) Stress the actions your child can control. When your child comes back from a competition that you did not observe, ask first about his or her success with the Three Crowns (positive attitude, full effort, good sportsmanship). If instead, “Who won?” is your first question, you communicate a primary interest in winning.

6) Avoid coaching your child. Do not tell him or her how their play could have been better. If you do, anxiety and fear of not pleasing you is increased. Leave the coaching duties to the coach. Your primary responsibility is cheerleading and continual positive moral support.

7) Do not brag about your child’s wins. This puts pressure on him or her to win in order to earn your continued pride. If you brag, you model an egotistical approach that is at odds with the humility that should accompany wins.

8) Cheer for opponents’ good shots. Pay compliments to their parents. Even if they and their children are poor sports, find ways to genuinely praise them. Never make excuses. Always give full credit to opponents, no matter how undeserved you think their victory might be.

9) Avoid criticizing mistakes. Opponents, teammates, coaches, tournament directors, officials, other parents, your child, and even you make mistakes. Often, they influence the outcome of competitions. Realize that gracious acceptance of mistakes, including your own, is a necessary part of both competition and life.

10) Take your child home if he or she is a poor sport. This is one time that parents should intervene. Bjorn Borg’s parents took Bjorn’s rackets away for almost a year when he misbehaved, and he became a great sportsman. John McEnroe’s parents did not.

Just a reminder that children need only a wristband, and not a shoe tag, to participate in VB tennis lessons, Rogers Rookie tournaments, and pro lessons. All children must have a shoe tag to play on court or take part in the Junior Tournament.

Paperbacks, hard covers, magazines, oh my! Fun at the VB book sale!

This Sunday we held our annual Victoria Beach Library Book Sale. It was a fun-filled afternoon and we sold many books! We raised almost $1 100 and this money will go towards the purchase of new books and library operating costs. The unsold books were picked up by Kathy Brydon who is part of the Prison Library Commission and the remaining books will be graciously transported to a Winnipeg fire hall by the Poulton family for donation to the upcoming Children’s Hospital book sale

It was as hot as a pressure cooker in the Clubhouse on Saturday, our set-up day, but everyone worked hard to help make our book sale a success! Hello VB kids!Here’s the plan for week three at the beach!The movies this week will be:July 15 - Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (PG 95 mins)July 17 - Disney Teen Beach Movie (PG 110 mins) The bike hike will be to Wanasing Beach.A couple of friendly reminders about bike hikes: all riders must

have helmets, water, sunscreen, a bathing suit, towel and a snack if they like. We meet at the clubhouse and leave at 10:00 sharp on Wednesdays. We are usually back at the clubhouse by 11:45. Parents are always welcome.

The craft this week will be DRY-DYe, something new: similar to Tie-Dye but without the mess. We will be selling a limited number of white t-shirts for $5. Please bring exact change.

Please remember to join us for golf lessons at the field on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10-10:45. We have clubs for everyone! At the end of lessons we always have a couple of contests for all ages-longest drive and closest to the pin. Winners get free popcorn and drink at the movies!

Wow! Was this year’s Beach Events not bigger than ever?!!

Despite the wind and major lightning event the night before, we got some great sun and a bigger-than-ever turnout for Beach Events on Sunday, July 6th. The kids (and adults) had a blast!!

We saw lots of new faces and lots of wonderfully familiar ones too! It’s cool to see some kids a wee bit older now and taking on the role of volunteer at the game stations for the younger ones. Awesome job guys!

On your marks! Sports Day will take place at the sports field and will start at 10:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday, July 19th. There will be no shortage of fun to be had with sprints, potato sack races, the family relay and the world famous slow bike race. Dress for the events as we will also have the water balloon bum break and an egg toss. Who is going to make the cover of the Herald this year with the biggest dive across the finish line, the best balloon break, or maybe the best egg face?

After two rainy, cold days we are off to a great start to the swim program! There have already been just under 200 swimmers registered. Thanks to all the swimmers for giving it their best shot and swimming in this chilly water! We have purchased a thermometer and will be recording the water temperature on the whiteboards for those interested.

Just a reminder that our 200m open swim is on July 12th at 1:00pm. We encourage swimmers of all ages to come out to participate and cheer on their friends. We will have noodles, lifejackets, and flutter boards available for those who wish to swim with them. Lifeguards will also be on the pier and in the water during the race.

Registration will continue throughout the summer from 9:30 to 10:30 at top of the swim dock. Don’t forget about adult lap swim from 10:30-11:00 at the swim dock! Just make sure to bring down your wristband.

The VB Master Tennis Tournament is back again -- it is a FUN competition open to all skill sets, so start practicing and come on out! It will be held on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday July 20 and is for players 40 and older. (If you turn 40 by December 31, 2014, you qualify.)

Please note: You must have a Club Membership ($50) and a tennis shoe tag ($15) for each family member wishing to play.

Registration is $5.00 per event, maximum is 3 events per player. Entry sheets will be posted at the courts on Saturday, July 12, and will remain there until Thursday, July 17. No entries after this time, please.

The draw will be posted at 7pm, Friday, July 18. In event of inclement weather, it will be up to the entrants to check with the conveners for re-scheduled draw times. The “default rule” will be in place, so if you are late (15 minutes after the posted game time), you or your team will be defaulted. Please return any trophies to the courts on Saturday, July 19—thank you.

ViOlATORS COMPlAiNiNG ABOUT ViOlATORS When I was in the Traffic Division in the Winnipeg Police I

received a phone call from a distraught woman complaining about a 3 way stop sign in Charleswood that no one stops at. I informed and assured her that we would look into this for her starting today. Two hours later my partner and I were parked near the stop sign and, sure enough, within 2 minutes our first violator blew through the intersection at approx. 20 kph. When we stopped her she stated that not only did she live on the street but she was the one who started the petition for the stop sign and was in fact the woman I had spoken to earlier on in the day. Needless to say, she was miffed when she received a ticket.

Similarly, a petition was signed by many regarding speeders on David Road and, lo and behold, who do we stop for speeding but someone whose name we recognize as being on the petition.

When asked about the petition, he stated that “yes”, it was in fact his name that appeared on the petition.

Moral of the story, if you are going to complain about something (dogs not on a leash), it is best that you are not out walking your dog off-leash as well. Remember that when you point a finger at someone else there are 3 pointing back at you.

BiCYCleS I have received complaints about cyclists riding on the road

and occupying more of the road than some motorists may deem acceptable. I am one of those cyclists and can assure you that when the “ 8 at the gate” crew go out riding we try to be as respectful to the motorists as we can. Please remember that with the thinner tires, we do not like to ride on gravel and sometimes have to ride around gravel patches ( David Rd at PTH 59 ). Also, the paved shoulder is covered with gravel and all forms of flotsam and jetsam from cars and trucks, some of which has blown off of a truck with an unsecured load. If we are riding 2 abreast and having a “sociable”, we always will yell “car back“ and pull into single file to let the vehicle go by. Please show us the same respect when we are out cycling with our mates and getting a little exercise at the same time. Thank You.

Faith Bible Camp, located at the northern tip of our peninsula, held an open house to commemorate its 60th anniversary on Saturday June 28th. If, like me, you have only ever ridden by its entrance on your way to Sandy Bay beach, you may be unaware of what a remarkable operation it is.

The camp is run entirely by volunteers and offers traditional children’s camps as well as young adult,family, and over 55 camps. Many of the volunteer staff attended the camp as children and now their children and in some cases their grandchildren go to Faith Bible camp.

The camp facilities are equally remarkable. The accommodation cabins for both campers and the volunteer support staff have been newly built or renovated in the past few years. The cedar sided cabins have pine interior siding and include ceiling fans and indoor plumbing which I am sure is appreciated by the 55+ campers in particular. The dining hall and chapel buildings are the last buildings remaining from when the camp moved from Elk Island in 1970.

Peter Paulson’s grandson, Ron Hampton, led the commemoration ceremony. After a short slideshow illustrating the history of the camp, he thanked the numerous VB people and businesses who have supported the camp over its 60 years. A special presentation was made to Chuck and Brad Einfeld and their spouses; Einfeld’s Bakery has been supplying bread to the camp for the entire 60 years. Einfeld’s bread is served at every meal which probably helps

Get Your Swim On!

Another day of gruelling warm-ups, punishing drills, heat exhaustion, blisters, tears and...just kidding! It was, as usual, a great all-girl afternoon with plenty of action for our up-and-coming tennis stars.

A high five to all the girls for their enthusiastic turnout and upbeat attitude. This is what makes Girls’ Tennis Day so worthwhile year after year.

An immense thank you to Mike Lodewyks for stepping in at the last minute as our pro. Not only did he save the day, but also added a fresh dynamic to this year’s event. Lots of great ideas on a go-forward basis too.

Thanks also to court attendants Julia and Sophia as well as Jane, Michelle, Angie, Wendy and Jill who backed me up. I couldn’t have done this without you.

A nod of appreciation goes to Babolat Canada for contributing the take- home souvenirs this year and “un gros merci” to the charming Anne Attia at the Club de Tennis Ile des Soeurs for helping that to happen.

My final word is to each and every girl who came out this year. I so encourage all of you to take Mike up on his challenge: find a friend (maybe someone from GTD?), a brother, sister, parent or neighbour and get down to the courts for a few more “hits” this summer. See you there!

Sandy beaches, winding dirt roads free of cars, starry nights sans city lights and a strong sense of community are just a few of the things that have stayed the same at Victoria Beach since the resort community’s beginnings in the early 1900s.

After two-and-a-half years of researching and writing, historians Gregory Thomas and Sheila Grover have printed and pressed 100 Summers on Lake Winnipeg: A resort history of Victoria Beach. Through personal narratives, photos, maps and words, this beautifully designed hard-cover coffee-table book chronicles the resort community since its development by the Victoria Beach Company 1913, through to the Depression-era years and World Wars all the way to the present day.

The book was inspired Victoria Beach’s 100-year anniversary and the need to record a disappearing history, as well as misinformation surrounding the origins of the community.

“There’s just too many generations that have passed, and the stability from the original generation is lost – we don’t know that story anymore,” Grover says. “We had to go back to written sources. Although, we had three or four really old people to point us in the right direction and fill in colour.”

When Thomas and Grover reached out to the community for photos and stories, the enthusiastic response was a testament to people’s desire that the history of Victoria Beach’s resort community be told.

“We had two summers working on it, so we put the word out and people would come to us and say, ‘I don’t know if this is very good, here’s my photo of ...’ and we’d open it up and go wow!” Grover says. “Complete strangers would give us access to diaries, letters, photographs, memorabilia. So it allowed us to flush it out because our big sources were the Herald and all the documentation and records from the RM of VB office.”

Grover has been spending her summers at Victoria Beach for as long as she can remember. Her family’s cottage has seen three generations grow up in the summer resort town on the south-eastern shores of Lake Winnipeg.

“When I was a kid we were down there and my mom had no car, and she had all these kids, and boy oh boy, you didn’t go anywhere,” Grover says about her childhood

summers at the lake. “But that’s all you knew anyways so it wasn’t like you were going ‘how long till we get can get out of here,’ it was just like, ‘this is where we are and this is where we’ll stay.’”

In some ways Victoria Beach has stood still in the face of modernization. However, the effects of contemporary society can be seen — touch screens light up people’s faces in the afterglow of a day at the beach

and blue-green algae sometimes keeps swimmers out of the water. This book acts as a reminder that change is inevitable, but that an aware and active group of people can push forward their vision and create change for present and future generations.

“There is a bedrock personality to the community, you have to buy in and say, good, I want to leave my car; for the most part, I want to unplug; I want to lead a simpler life, presumably closer to nature,” Grover says. “I think that most people can recognize it as something they value.”

Hello all,It was a slow start to the season due to the rainy weather, but it

has still been a great couple of weeks regardless! So far GVS has been a hit, as expected. I hope everyone continues to come out and have a good time! The first Rogers Rookie Tournament was also huge success. We had 54 participants between the ages of 5 and 11. For all the teens out there, I strongly recommend you come out to Junior Night Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30. Junior Night is for teens of all skill levels, so even if you are new to tennis we encourage you to participate. We will be playing games like GVS, King’s court and Around the World. And for the beginners I will be giving tips and instruction. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more of you in the coming weeks!
