YEARS 5, 6, 7 & 8 SWIMMING PROGRAMDuring terms one and two, many of our Ilim College students in years 5, 6, 7 and 8 participated in a fantastic swimming program which was thoroughly enjoyed by all participating students. The boy’s program was conducted at Fawkner Leisure Centre and the girl’s at Epping Leisure City which consisted of six sessions.

The swimming program familiarised children with the aquatic environment in which they learnt basic water safety skills and explored various swimming techniques through a wide range of activities in the pool conducted by qualified swimming instructors.

Students enjoyed the swimming program immensely, were very enthusiastic and keen throughout the program, and were congratulated by the instructors at the centre for the improvement they showed in their swimming skills upon completion of the program.

A very big thank you to all staff members that were involved in the program, parents for their support and allowing their children to participate and students for their dedication, fine efforts and positive behaviour.

OUR FUTURE OLYMPIANS - Our Junior boys had fun while learning basic

water safety skills and swimming techniques at Fawkner Leasure Centre.

Grade 6 Students Hard Work AwardTeachers rewarded their hard working grade 6 students on the 12th July last term with a fun filled day where the students enjoyed excit-ing games of bowling. Overall, the day ended with smiles, excitement and memories which will last for many years to come. I commend the students who behaved perfectly and represented our school with great care. Well done grade 6’s and we look forward to having an-other well deserved excursion soon.

For the first time in Ilim College history our young futsal team came Runners-Up in the School Futsal Championship organised by the Futbal Federation of Victoria. The Runners-Up banner was presented to our year 10 futsal team at the end of a gruelling 1 day tournament at Bendigo on the 22nd of June, 2009.

Many schools and colleges from all over Victoria competed in this highly challenging tournament. The team of boys pulled through a very challenging semi final. Despite the unfortunate injuries of two key players and an exceptionally well experienced opposition, the Ilim boys attempted a forward charge and the dominance of the opposition was short lived. And of course, the rest is history.

Our players were presented with their medals and banner at the end of the tournament by a representative of the Football Federation of Victoria.

A key player, Salih Doren, has even received transfer offers from the Premier League coaches after they witnessed him score two goals within the first 30 seconds of Ilim College’s first game. His extraordinary ability to score goals was marked as spectacular.

Winning all their matches with great margins has allowed the Yr 10 boys from Ilim College to advance easily as first in their group. Representing the support from the administrative team of Ilim College was the Secondary Vice Principal Mr Selim Kayikci. Mr. Kayikci supported the boys along on the day. The boys celebrated their success over dinner and shared many exciting moments and they returned home with the happiness of living such a thrilling day.

Ilim College have been invited to compete in the Nation-al Futbal Competition in Sydney. We wish them all the best.

Girls Etiquette Workshops Since last term we have been running self-esteem and body image workshops for Year 8 girls. High school girls are especially targeted by media to look a certain way which is often very confusing. Therefore, within the group session we have been focussing on self-esteem and developing strengths. During this time students learned:

• The definition of self-esteem and how to improve their self-esteem • How our self-esteem effects they way we feel and think about ourselves • Media and body image • What is success? • What their strengths are.

This year Ilim College is working proactively in order to prevent mental health issues in young people and develop their residency. For that reason the school has commenced the You Can Do It! Program for the whole school from prep to Year 12. The purpose of the program is to develop students’ social and emotional well-being. There are 5 keys to success that students will be actively learning about. These are: Resilience, Organisation, Persistence, Confidence and Getting Along.

As an Islamic school we have included an extra key for Imaan. These are essential keys to success not only at school but also in work and home environment. By introducing these skills we endeavour to give our students the best opportunity of achieving their life goals.

This Term we started the Ready Set Go Lessons and covered the key area of success. As parents you can encourage your children in obtaining success by complimenting them i.e. “wow you’re very organised with your homework”, “you are very confident at..... and “MaashAllah your efforts and persistence in memorizing Quraan is exceptional”. Grade 5’s Invention~ Their Own Salah Book ~

During Term Two the Grade five students focused on the importance of prayer and how to pray their prayers. Students looked at different Hadiths and Ayahs from the Holy Quran to understand the importance prayer has in our daily lives. One of the benefits of prayer is the reminder of Allah (S.W.T) throughout the day so we are more mindful to choose those actions (thought, word, and deed) which are pleasing to Allah (S.W.T).

As part of their holiday homework students were asked to make their own Salah books. They were to take pictures of themselves praying, and write next to the picture the name of the Raka’ah and what is recited during that Raka’ah. Students came up with fantastic ideas to present their work and above are some examples of students work. Students found this activity fun and useful as they can keep it as a resource for themselves to refer back to.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Grade five students on the wonderful effort that they have put into their work.

The Welfare/Counselling Department is committed to working closely with parents. Too often I have parents approaching me with similar issues and stresses. Therefore, in order to address some of these issues we have begun to run parenting programs in Turkish and Arabic. The term 2 Turkish Parenting Program was very suc-cessful. The feedback was very positive and parents appreciated speakers from the same cultural background. I would like to thank all those parents who participated especially the fathers.

This term we will be running a Parenting Program in Arabic see the flyer for more information. The program will be run by an experienced Muslim Family Therapist who has worked in the Muslim community for many years.
