“Most professionals in Silicon Valley said that making a lot of money was very important to them.

Yet many of them stated that they would work for less, just for the opportunity to work on something that energizes them and helps them grow professionally.”

Growth Mindset and Resilience

Participants step out of their comfort zone into an unfamiliar environment where they work through unexpected obstacles. By reflecting on and learning from both successes and failures, participants build resilience and a growth mindset

Customer-Centric Innovation

Teams use the design thinking process to build empathy for their nonprofit customers, then prototype solutions. Once in-country, their initial assumptions may be challenged by the local environment and available resources, requiring teams to rapidly iterate to develop a solution that is both practical and impactful for their nonprofit customers.

InclusivityParticipants build cultural intelligence by working with a shared sense of purpose with their employee team and the local nonprofit partner. They learn to appreciate the commonalities and differences in their cultures and to leverage each other’s strengths.

Communication and Collaboration

Teams bring together employees from across the organization and around the world, from recent college grads to senior leaders. They are encouraged to practice effective communication and collaboration to rapidly build trust amongst the team and with the nonprofits to make a meaningful impact. Participants leave with a broader perspective of the organization and a strong network.

Decision Making under Ambiguity

Team4Tech’s social impact projects are focused on making sustainable change and improving the quality of education through technology solutions and training. Projects are limited by time, nonprofit resources, and ambiguities in the local environment, so participants practice being adaptable and making real time decisions to maximize impact for their nonprofit customer within these constraints.

Launched in 2012, Adobe’s pro bono program has grown to 50 projects a year with Team4Tech and others.

Biggest challenge: Execution.

Solution: Strategic partnerships can set companies up for success.

• “You don’t have to recreate the wheel. There are examples of high impact corporate pro bono out there. Look at those examples and learn from them…You can accelerate your path to running a successful pro bono program.”

• “With Team4Tech, Adobe sends 10 employees to a developing country for two weeks. They educate schools about how to leverage technology and design for more effective teaching.”

The result: Employee engagement, skill development, community impact

• “Again and again, employees report increased satisfaction with their jobs and with Adobe after participating in the program — and 100% of employees would recommend pro bono to a colleague.”

• “Some have even said that their pro bono project was the highlight of their career. So we know that it’s providing a really positive experience. Employees get to develop new skills, and they feel really good about working for a company that prioritizes community involvement.”

7 Team4Tech projects completed

Project Examples: Nepal & Colombia

• Nonprofit partner’s goal: To help local communities design and retrofit houses and schools to resist disasters such as earthquakes.

• Autodesk’s team helped the nonprofit partner scale by applying design thinking to develop a technology solution that reduced the time to survey and model a home for retrofitting from 4-5 days to 2-3 hours.

“Spending time in an international location provided exposure to customers using Autodesk products in ways that allowed us to understand challenges we don't encounter at home. This opportunity helped us break down barriers internally and work with folks who we would likely never have worked with otherwise.”

Julia Papapietro McFarland, Autodesk participant

“Our employees grow personally and professionally through these projects, and they get to work directly with organizations using technology and design to make a positive impact in their community.”

Kellan Hays, Employee Impact Manager, Autodesk

Autodesk aligns their Team4Tech projects to their leadership development and foundation goals.

Autodesk’s Team4Tech participants are high potential leaders and experts nominated by Autodesk executives. The projects serve as both a recognition of the employee’s potential and an opportunity to develop the leadership skills they want to advance in an impactful way.

The Autodesk Foundation provides grants to nonprofits that use Autodesk software in innovative ways. Autodesk selects nonprofits partners for Team4Tech projects from this portfolio of grantees. These nonprofits benefit from the project team’s expert knowledge. The Autodesk project teams benefit from seeing firsthand how customers use their software and take these customer insights back to their work.

4 Team4Tech projects completed

Project Example: Alaska

• Yukon-Koyukuk Public School District’s goal: To prepare students for college and careers.

• Pure Storage’s team conducted technology workshops for teachers on publishing tools, robotics, and 3D printing. They also helped improve the school’s technology infrastructure.

“Team4Tech’s skilled volunteering programs for technology companies are a great way to build leadership skills while also uplifting young people through education-based initiatives.”

Nicole Johnson, Exec. Director PureGood Foundation

“Employees who have a sense of purpose are higher performers, more productive, and more likely to stay with their employer. A program like this makes employees feel valued and their purpose is linked not only to the work they do but to the most precious gift that can be given – education.”

Alexandra Gartrell, Pure Storage Team4Tech participant

Page 16: Julie Clugage Co-Founder & Executive Director · Team4Tech offers technology companies an opportunity to engage employees with global social impact projects that offer meaningful

Pure Good Foundation was established in 2015 to deepen employee engagement in communities around the world. • "An initial goal of the foundation was to do immersive service. An employee had participated in a Team4Tech project and then

joined Pure Storage. He said, ‘I just did this project with an amazing organization. It really changed my life.’”• "The leadership development sealed the deal. As a fairly new company, we were struggling with leadership development for

our employees. [The Team4Tech leadership development curriculum] would be a great opportunity for our employees.”Now employees raise money at their annual sales conference for the Pure Good Foundation to fund Team4Tech projects.

Some of the benefits we’ve seen are:• "The leadership development...folks who have gone through the program really flourish, whether they’ve changed jobs or not,

they’ve really flourished with what they’re working on. “ • "The incredibly deep connections employees make with each other through the project - across departments, across

geographic regions - are going to benefit the company. “• "Employees have a revived sense of pride about where they work, who they work with, what they do...They come back re-

committed to the work. Even employees who don’t go on the project are proud that their company is behind this.”

• “Millennials value training and development as the most coveted job benefit, over flexible hours, cash bonuses, vacation time, and retirement funding.” Deloitte 2016

• “Employees want meaning in their vocation. In fact, for millennials, it is among the strongest drivers of retention. “ Gallup 2017

Millennials want what Team4Tech delivers

• “The biggest skill that I am still using is communication. We had to be incredibly explicit and clear with what we were asking for and working on throughout that project due to the language/cultural differences and the fact that we had such a tight timeline to accomplish so much. It taught me to think about the situation from the other person/team’s perspective before communicating. I’m currently working on a big, cross-functional project, and I need buy in from our SVP and the VPs of other departments. I used this strategy and approached the project from their view point and built my argument in a way that addressed the questions I thought they were going to have, rather than the questions that I had when I started out (which were pretty different). It allowed me to be much better prepared facing people far above my pay grade!“

• “This entire project made me realize that I haven't been challenged at work in quite the way that I want to be. The number ofobstacles, both foreseen and unpredictable, that we had to work through in 10 days (and including the 7 weeks of prep) far outnumbered those that I've encountered since starting at my organization. I came back and immediately asked to take on larger, more strategic projects and feel more confident and capable to successfully drive and complete them because of what we achieved with Team4Tech.“

• “I definitely feel more empowered to propose ideas and to look for solutions that before this experience, I just didn’t think about or thought they were out of my reach. It helped me to improve my listening skills and to communicate in a better, more assertiveway. It also helped me build my the growth mindset by prototyping and experimenting leads and approaching problems in more agile ways to get to better outcomes. Professionally, growth mindset is a great approach to handle challenges at work, and issomething I´m already putting into practice. “

• "I had never met my fellow cohort members, but have since developed rich relations and find myself consulting with them whenever I am faced with an issue. I have also actively mentored/coached one colleague from the team and she is now at a very good place in her career.”
