This month’s culture….A glimpse at NEPAL Did you know… Nepalese Rupee…
Facts about Nepal…
landlocked; strategic location between China and India; contains eight of world's 10 highest peaks, including Mount Everest and
Kanchenjunga - the world's tallest and third tallest - on the borders with China and India respectively
Nepal's capital city is Kathmandu
Nepal highest point: Mount Everest 8,850 m (highest point in the world) Everest in the Nepali language is Sagarmatha which means goddess of the sky and it stands at a staggering 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level.
People in Nepal do not greet one another with a handshake, but rather put their palms together and bow their forehead and say Namaste (directly translated as ‘I salute the God in youˇ). This is the same greeting used throughout India.
Nepal is the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha. Siddhartha Gautam (Buddha) was born in Kapilvastu, Lumbini which lies in Nepal. Lumbini is a sacred place for Buddhists.
A popular and cheap ‘fast food’ is the Momo. Delicious dumplings made from flour and water filled with different fillings like chicken, meat or vegetables either fried or steamed and served with a dipping sauce.
Nepal is home to one of the few places on earth where you can see both the Bengal tiger and the one-horned rhinoceros.
The Annapurna region was voted one of the top 10 best trekking places on earth.
Little Princes written by Conor Grennan is about child trafficking in Nepal and spawned the NGO Next Generation Nepal which reunites children and their families and aids rural communities. A must read and a portion of the proceeds from every book go directly to the cause!
The Sherpas are an ethnic group from mostly the eastern mountainous part of Nepal. Many are employed as porters for mountain expeditions as they do not suffer the effect of altitude and due to their genetics and upbringing. Many groups refer to their porters as Sherpas.
Nepal’s climate: varies from cool summers and severe winters in north to subtropical summers and mild winters in south.
Nepal has the densest concentration of World Heritage Sites. Kathmandu valley alone has 7 World Heritage Cultural sites within a radius of 15 kilometers.
The Nepali flag is the only nation with non-quadrilateral flag. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.

FATHER’S DAY Sunday, 6 September 2015
What do people do? Many Australians celebrate Father’s Day by showing their appreciation for their fathers or father figures. Acts of appreciation are done in different ways and may include (but are not limited to):
A day out in the park, at the movies, at a zoo, or another place of interest.
Handmade or purchased cards.
Presents such as food baskets, chocolates, clothing, equipment for hobbies, or gift vouchers.
Breakfasts, brunches, lunches, or dinners either at home, at a restaurant, or at a café.
Father’s Day charity activities, such as fun runs or purchasing special gifts, to raise money for causes such as services for the visually impaired or research on prostate cancer.
Some families may prefer to visit places of worship together, like churches, synagogues or mosques.
Some fathers and father figures receive adventures or experiences as Father’s Day gifts. They may include a quad bike adventure, swimming with whale sharks, or abseiling. Some magazines and newspapers choose this time of the year to publish positive Father’s Day stories that focus on the challenges that some men faced and achievements that they made to provide the best for children in Australia. Many of these articles are published both in print and online. Television and radio programs may also have Father’s Day specials during this period. Background There are some suggestions that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Father’s Day in Australia occurs on the first Sunday of September. Father’s Day in some countries is on the third Sunday of June, which is close to the June solstice. The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and planned a day to honour fathers early in the 20th century. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910.
And, how are we going to celebrate Father’s Day at Juliana Village this year??...well, we are having a Father’s Day Carnival!
We hope to see you all there!
There will be drinks and snacks, some good ol’ fashioned
games & exciting acts to keep you entertained! If you would like to join us, and we really hope you do, please RSVP to Vicki or Galina in the George’s
Centre, 9541 3405 by Wed, 26th August
