Juilliard Dance Choreographic Honors Edition 2018
Welcome to Juilliard Dance Choreographic Honors 2018!
It has been my great privilege to attend and introduce each of the eight workshop showings of our students’ choreography this school year. Our students have challenged themselves as creators, muses, and collaborators in an effort to find artistic growth.
The dances you will see tonight were all selected from these workshops, and the faculty and I want to recognize that there is an enormous amount of additional talent, exploration, and discovery from choreographers throughout our student body that we simply could not fit onto the stage this weekend. We aim to support all of our students in their journey to find their artistic voices, and we applaud their individual and collective work this year.
Thank you for your ongoing encouragement of our many imaginative choreographic voices as they continue to refine and develop what they have to say.
Enjoy.

About the Designers
Ted Sullivan (Lighting Design)
Ted Sullivan has worked on and off Broadway and toured extensively in the U.S and internationally. He has designed lighting for shows that have been seen at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Hartford Stage, among others; for revivals of works choreographed by Agnes de Mille, Jirí Kylián, and George Balanchine; and for dance companies including Doug Varone and Dancers, American Ballet Theatre, and the Limón Dance Company. His work has also been seen at leading theaters worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera House, Taiwan’s Chiang Kai-Shek National Theatre, Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower and Terrace Theaters. In addition to lighting theater, opera, and dance, he also works in architectural lighting and has received two Lumen awards.
Márion Talán (Costume Design)
Currently wardrobe supervisor at Juilliard, Márion Talán’s recent designs for dance include Bryan Arias’s a rather lovely thing at Jacobs Pillow (2016); Caleb Teicher’s Small and Tall at Jacobs Pillow (2016) and Meet Ella at the Gibney Dance Center (2016); and Liz Gerring’s Glaciers at the Joyce Theater (2015). Additional work includes Talksikan for Ballet X (2015) and Fold by Fold for Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet (2013). For Juilliard’s Dance Division she has created costumes for Composers and Choreographers, the Senior Graduation Concert, Ohad Naharin’s Secus for Juilliard Dances Repertory 2012 and From Max and Three for New Dances: Edition 2009, and a new version of Jerome Robbins’s Opus Jazz for Juilliard Dances Repertory 2010, among others. About Juilliard Dance
Juilliard Dance aims to create true contemporary dancers—trained equally in classical ballet and modern dance. Established in 1951 by William Schuman during his tenure as president of The Juilliard School, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, Juilliard became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques.
Each year 24 new dancers are accepted into the four-year BFA program. In addition to the daily ballet and modern technique classes, every dancer participates in classical and contemporary partnering, dance composition, anatomy, acting, dance history, stagecraft, production, music theory, repertory, and elements of performing. Dancers are encouraged to present their own choreographed works in informal concerts and workshop presentations. Each fall every class has the opportunity to work with established choreographers in premieres as part of the New Dances performances. Recent commissions include works by Bryan Arias, Roy Assaf, Gentian Doda, John Heginbotham, Matthew Neenan, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Pam Tanowitz. Spring performances give dancers the opportunity to perform in established works from repertory. Recent repertory performances include works by Pina Bausch, Merce Cunnngham, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Martha Graham, Jirí Kylián, José Limón, Mark Morris, Crystal Pite, Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, and Paul Taylor.
Juilliard Dance alumni include, among many others, the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, Lar Lubovitch, Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, BJM_Danse, L.A. Dance Project, Limon Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Ballett des Saarlandisches Staatstheater, Kidd Pivot, and Batsheva Dance Company, among many others, as well as in several Broadway productions.
The Juilliard Dance Division, the proud recipient of the 2015 Capezio Award, is the first educational institution to receive the honor. (juilliard.edu/dance)

oJuilliard Scholarship Fund
To make a gift to the Juilliard Scholarship Fund, please call (212) 799-5000, ext. 278, or visit giving.juilliard.edu/scholarship.
The Juilliard School is home to more than 800 dancers, actors, and musicians, over 90 percent of whom are eligible for financial aid. With your help, we can offer the scholarship support that makes a world of difference—to them and to the global future of dance, drama, and music.
Behind every Juilliard artist is all of Juilliard—including you.
