Most websites are like houses. You build what you want when you want it. If you want to add an extension, conservatory or a new door, you can tack it on. Adding these requires either planning ahead or major works at the time.

Joomla! is like a wooden house frame. You start with the basic structure and make additions as you go.

There are three things which make Joomla! a powerful system:

1. Components – Provide functionality like a shopping cart, photo gallery, blog etc…

2. Modules – Allow the output of a Component to be placed anywhere on the site like a Latest News module on the front page. Think of them as windows to the Component.

3. Plugins – Affect the output, extend the functionality of Components. Can be used to dynamically replace text, hide articles from unregistered users and add security functions.

Joomla! is especially good for user management. A component called Community Builder is great for member profiles and can be customised and extended greatly.

You can change the template to give it a completely different look with just a couple of clicks or add new features in by uploading the required extension.
