• Miguel de Cervantes
Saavedra was born in Alcalá
de Henares, Spain, on
September 29, 1547.
• He studied in Madrid and
went on to become a soldier
in Italy.
• In 1571 he was wounded at
the battle of Lepanto, losing
the use of his left hand.
• He suffered for five years as
a captive of the Turks before
returning to Spain in 1580.
Culture Note: Cervantes
• Cervantes began writing
novels and plays and in 1605
he published the first part of
his great masterpiece, the
Ingenious Hidalgo Don
Quixote de la Mancha.
• The book tells the story of an
absent-minded knight and his
somewhat more sensible
squire, Sancho.
