No doubt, we are all being negatively impacted to a lesser or greater extent and I hope you are managing to cope. Please don't hesitate to call on fellow members of the Club if there is any help you need. Our first Board meeting of the Rotary year is on Tuesday, 14 July. This is where we would normally set out our stall for what we will do in the year ahead; however, this year is anything but normal! With no income in the near future and major restrictions on what we are phys- ically able to do, we will be focusing on how we best manage the serious impacts to the Club. I'll provide an update at our weekly Thursday meeting. We have Alison and Kieron giving their new member talk then, too. These are often the most interesting talks of the year (no pressure, guys) so one not to be missed. In honour of Bastille Day, we will give the whole meeting a French theme so please try to join in with appro- priate backgrounds / props / outfits! President’s Message

    Hi All,

At our meeting last week, a number of members told us of their sig-nificant challenges arising from the return to Stage 3 restrictions, and our thoughts are with them.

With no income in the near future and major restrictions on what we are phys-ically able to do, we will be focusing on how we best manage the serious impacts to the Club. I'll provide an update at our weekly Thursday meeting.

We have Alison and Kieron giving their new member talk then, too. These are often the most interesting talks of the year (no pressure, guys) so one not to be missed. In honour of Bastille Day, we will give the whole meeting a French theme so please try to join in with appro-priate backgrounds / props / outfits! Hope to see you then,

    Fundraising Committee Update

    Farmers Market Update

With another lockdown upon us, the earliest date for the Black Rock Farmers Market will be Saturday, 12 September. The Beaumaris Primary School Oval ‘refurbishment’ is tracking ahead of schedule so, hopefully, we can restart Beaumaris Farmers Market soon subject to COVID-19.

COVID-19 Plan – we will continue to work with Regional Farm-ers Markets to prepare and submit a COVID-19 Plan to Bayside City Council to obtain a permit for the Black Rock Farmers Mar-ket.

Marketing – once a date is confirmed, we will ramp up our so-cial media activity with a blitz two to three weeks beforehand. We would like to use images of members on our website, social media and in the Neighbourhood Watch leaflet and will request your permission by email shortly.

    Golf Day Update

Pre-planning – the Committee continues to action sponsors, prizes and background activities, prior to ramping up detailed planning towards the end of October.

    Secretary Notes

The Centenary of Rotary in Australia will be celebrated on 21 January 2021. There will be a baton relay as part of the cele-brations. There will be more publicity about this in future com-munications.

Alma Reynolds the District Governor has said that the dates for the Conference will be 1 / 2 March 2021. They are planning for both a face to face and a Digital Conference. A definite decision about the medium will be made by 1 February 2021.

In my Zoom visits to other clubs I have found that Glen Waver-ley Rotary has produced a one-day food package, of food you can eat straight away. It is intended for the homeless, as well as being used by other relief agencies. The Police have cur-rently requested some of the packs.

    Indigenous Committee Report:

2021 Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA) and other projects

    ALPA Project

ALPA, an indigenous owned and operated CoOp, owns 9 remote community stores and manages another 20 across the Kimberley to Cape York region. ALPA has been operating successfully in the retail and food distribution business for over 40 years with 95% of its staff being Aboriginal.

The ALPA Project is one of the options outlined to last year’s Board and refined this year following further discussions with ALPA and Darwin Rotary Club.

The purpose of this Project is to expand opportunities from purely retail (stores) to administration, buying and financial support for its stores. These roles are largely undertaken in Darwin where the work-force is predominantly non-Aboriginal.

The Project entails employing two young (school leavers) Aboriginal people in their Darwin HQ. ALPA would hire and guarantee place-ments after appropriate training, with the two placements rotating through various ALPA Head Office functions (e.g. Purchasing, HR, IT, Operations and Training) to assist the network of stores and suppliers (mainly Metcash) across the top end of the Northern Territory.

To secure the two placements, Darwin Rotary Club, in collaboration with District 9810 Clubs (led by Beaumaris Rotary Club), aims to raise $30k during 2020/21, with ALPA fulfilling any shortfall. Post the first year, ALPA would continue to employ the successful individuals (if mutually agreeable), as part of its 1200 people workforce. Subject to success of this Project, it is hoped that future placements for young aboriginals can be secured.

Currently, subject to Board approval (following Darwin Rotary Club and District being on board), we are contributing $12k, with a similar amount being contributed by other District Clubs.

Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS), Indigenous Art and Trachoma support

This year, support will continue for MITS, based in Richmond, with a contribution of circa $3k.

With Bob McArthur’s lead, we are hoping the sale of Indigenous art-work, through Club-related events, will prove to be a good fundraiser this year.

The ‘End Trachoma’ fundraiser also targets Indigenous support, given the prevalence of this condition in some remote communities. The Committee will want to play its part in this as well.

    This Week’s Speaker

Speaker: Lisa Grant Topic: Bayside Community Hub (BCH) Success Lisa was born in the Kingston/Bayside area and is now happily living in the suburb of Beaumaris with her husband and 3 children.

With a Bachelor of Information Technology from Swin-burne University, and 20 years working in the IT industry, Lisa has forged a path from Programmer through to Program Manager, working in Australia, Asia, and the UK. Lisa has also followed her passion for supporting small businesses with post-graduate qualifications in Business Management and Business Coaching, and a number of years of running her own small business and supporting others. She has recently worked extensively in Social Me-dia and Social Media Marketing and can provide a wealth of current knowledge within these areas of expertise. She knows how daunting it is to start your own business, and to suddenly need expertise in marketing, sales, finance, law and more, and can help you to overcome some of those hurdles with your own small business.

Before starting her family in 2006, Lisa spent 6 months doing volunteer work in Africa, and it was there that her love of supporting the local community began. She no-ticed that, despite all of the hardships faced by the people she was helping, the community bonded together to help each other through “thick and thin” in a way she had never experienced before.

BCH provides Lisa with the perfect opportunity to continue exploring her passion to help both the community and

small businesses. Lisa hopes that the support provided through Bayside Community Hub can help the Bay-side Community to thrive and prosper!
