Loss of kakari-musubi
係り結び doesn’t exist in most dialects of today.
係り結び with 連体形 was lost in the Muromachi period, as a result of the loss of the 終止/ 連体 distinction. (It became the norm to conclude the sentence with 連体形 .)
係り結び with 已然形 (and こそ ) survived longer, and is still present in some dialects.

( 鹿児島県種子島 )‘ 君だから ( こそ ) 、お金を貸したのだ’

Functions of kakari-musubi
What do ぞ・なむ・こそ (& や ) attach to? What are the exact functions of ぞ・なむ・こそ ?
Hypothesis: A bound particle attaches to the focus of the sentence. (cf)
Focus is the part of an utterance (sentence) that is: important / of high communicative interest conveys “new information” (in English) is often accompanied by the greatest phonologi
cal prominence (heavy stress) The part that is not a focus is called background.

1. pitch movements within the focus phrase are emphasized (optional)
2. pitch movements within the phrases following the focus phrase are suppressed (obligatory)
3. there is a rise at the end of the focus phrase (obligatory)

連体形終止 itself can serve as a maker of:(i) question, (ii) exclamation, (iii) explanation, etc.
ぞ・なむ・や・か clarifies the function of 連体形終止 .
The functions of 連体形終止 (& ぞ・なむ・や・か ) were largely replaced by expressions like ノ , ノダ , コトダ , etc.
「みな鎧 (armor) の袖 (sleeves) をぞ濡らしける」 ( 平家 )‘ みな、鎧のそでを濡らしたのでした’
「その竹の中に、もと光る竹なむ一筋ありける」(竹取)‘ その竹の中に、根元の光る竹が一本あったのでした’

物語の進行の中で重要な意味を持つ出来事の発生( 新日本語文法選書 4: p.254)
How is the location of a kakari-particle determined?
Hypothesis:(i) preferably, the focus
(ii) if impossible (thetic sentence, verb focus), on any item
(iii) the factor of “rhythm” may be relevant.
Kakari-musubi with こそ
こそ has two functions: (i) concession, and
(ii) emphasis. Both uses survive in modern Japanese, altho
ugh they lack the corresponding 已然形終止 (conclusion with a izen-form)
(concession) 中垣こそあれ、一つ家のやうなれば
‘ 中垣 (partition wall) はあるけれど、一つの家のようなので’
昔こそ難波ゐなかといわれけめいま都引き都びにける‘昔は「難波は田舎だ」、と言われただろうが、今は都が移って、すっかり都らしくなった’
打率こそ悪いが、 1発はある。 ‘(Speaking of Nakamura,) his batting average
is low, but he hits homers.’ 立場の違いこそあれど、この男とのつきあ
いは長い。‘He and I have been friends for a long time,
although we have different standpoints’
(emphasis) 「物のあはれは秋こそまされ」 ( 伊勢 )
‘It is autumn that is the most graceful’ 「なほこそ国のほうは見やらるれ」 ( 土佐 )
‘ それでも故郷の方に目が行くよ’
これこそ僕が求めていたものだ。‘This is just what I wanted’
僕こそおわびを申し上げなければなりません。‘It is I, not you, that must apologize.’
The emphatic use of こそ
Unlike the cases of ぞ & なむ , it seems reasonable to say こそ has a function of emphasis.
The item followed by こそ is a focus, as can be confirmed by phonological diagnoses.
こそ in its emphatic use seems to (i) indicate a focus, and (ii) add a nuance of contrast (“X, but not other things”).
The concessive use of こそ
The concessive use of こそ is closely related to the original function of the izen-form (the subjunctive mood).
An izen-form occurs in an adverbial clause.
(reason, condition; because, when)
風吹きしかば、舟出さざりき‘風ガ吹イタノデ、舟ヲ出サナカッタ’
水清ければ、魚住まず。‘水ガキレイダト、魚ガ住マナイ’
柿食へば鐘が鳴るなり法隆寺‘as I eat a persimmon / the bell starts ringing / at Horyuji Temple’
… 天伝ふ 入日さしぬれ ますらをと思へる吾も 敷栲の 衣の袖は 通りて濡れぬ … (万葉集 :135)
‘ 日がさしてきて、一人前の男と自分では思っていたが、涙で袖が濡れてしまった’ ‘When the sun started shining, I couldn’t help
crying (although I always thought I was a
masurao)’
(concession; although) 武士は食わねど高楊枝。
‘武士ハ、食事ヲシテイナクテモ、楊枝ヲ使ウ’
ふみを書きてやれども、かへりごともせず。‘手紙ヲ書イテ送ルガ、返事モシナイ’
中垣こそあれ、一つ家のやうなれば‘ 中垣 (partition wall) はあるけれど、一つの家のようなので’
An izen-kei form has the ‘when, because’-meaning, when it occurs on its own or when it is
followed by ば the ‘although’-meaning, when it is followed by ど / ども or it occurs
with こそ
(‘when, because’) 日入りぬれ、泣きぬ
‘The sun having started shining, I cried’ 日入りぬれば、泣きぬ
‘As the sun started shining, I cried’(‘although’) 日入りぬれど、泣きぬ
日こそ入りぬれ、泣きぬ‘Although the sun started shining, I cried’
When こそ is used in a concessive context, it is not necessarily attached to a focus.
(e.g., 「中垣こそあれ、一つ家のやうなれば …」 )
The relation between the two uses
The concessive use appears to be prior to the emphatic use.
こそ in its concessive use tends to be attached to a contrasted item; this may have lead to the second, emphatic use, where こそ is attached to a focused item.
わが宿の萩の下葉は秋風もいまだ吹かねばかくぞ
もみてる ‘ 家の萩の葉には、秋風もまだ吹いていないのに、こんなに色がついた’‘The leaves of my hagi tree already changed
their color, although there’s no autumn breeze
yet’
(万葉集 :1628)
Topic: (the part of the sentence/utterance that refers to) what the sentence is about.
In other words: X is a topic of sentence Y iff Y is relevant to and increases the hearer’s knowledge of (the referent of) X.
