Camera Lenses and Focal LengthThere are 3 main focal ranges in camera lenses:1 Wide angle2 Standard3 Tele-photo

There are 2 main styles of camera lense:1 Zoom – Variable Focal length2 Prime – Fixed focal length

• Optical Zoom = Zooming by moving glass lenses closer or further apart in a lens.

• Digital Zoom – created by expanding each pixel size in an image (same as zooming in with Photoshop magnifier tool)

The Basic Job of the Lens!

• Lens Speed = A fast lens is one capable of opening up to a big aperture. For example, a lens capable of f/1.2 would be considered speedy while one that couldn’t open up to anything bigger than f/8 would be considered slow.

Focal LengthThe distance between the Camera lens and the CCD(camera pixel sensor). We change the focal length in orderTo FOCUS the subject.

2 ways to change the Focal Length:

1 Change the lens (Eg. wide angle to Telephoto)2 Use the Zoom function to extend the focal length of the lens.

• The Focal Length and Depth of Field are determined by the type of lens, focal length and size of lens iris opening (aperture).

• Adjusting the 3 Determiners of Exposure (Finding a Balance)

• Practice Using the 3 Determiners of Exposure!

#5 Using Exposure Compensation Instead of “M”, “AV” or “TV”

• Exposure Compensation allows a photographer to quickly improve a photograph’s EXPOSURE. By pressing the Exposure Compensation button you can use the Exposure Meter to brighten or dim your photo’s overall exposure. Please practice:

• Exposure Compensation | CameraSim
