Commemoration: Gireesh Karnad
Sias media school conducted a commemorative talk about Gireesh karnad, famous playwright

Interns’ day
SIAS media school organized "over a cup of tea" on 14/6/19 at college canteen. Students
who have done internship training had shared their experiences in various media. Mr.
Akhilnath of journalism department supervised the session. All the students of second year
mass communication were participated
Western Ghats – Trainers Training Work shop
SIAS Media school hosted a two day trainers training workshop on 15 & 16/06/2019 in
collaboration with Malabar Natural History Society Kozhikode, Peaceful Society Goa and
Save western Ghats Movement. Friends of Nature, NGO based at Calicut was the chief
partner of the Program and financially supported by Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department.
Famous speakers like Dr. Kishore Kumar, Mr.Kumar kalanand Mani ( Goa) Chairman,
Indian River Network, MP Chandran and Hamidali Vazhakkad were the present.
English Learning Workshop
SIAS media school and department of commerce jointly organized a workshop on acquiring
listening and speaking skill through CLT for 21 days with the assistance of English
department. Dr Abdul razak P who is a ASAP trainer and lecturer of English department at
SAFI institute of advanced study handled the sessions. Almost 30 students from both
departments participated the 21 days program. An exam was conducted for the students as
part of the workshop. "This sessions were very much helpful and it changed the fear of
English for us" reviewed by the students.
UGC NET COACHING
SIAS media school conducted a session on "how to face UGC NET". This session was
handled by Mr.Sreekumar, HOD of Department of English, SIAS. The coaching class was for
general paper. It was conducted only for the second year JMC student. This session was very
helpful for the students who are were facing the UGC net exam for the first time.
Commemorative talk on Muhammed Morsi
SIAS media school conducted a commemorative talk about Mohammed Morsi, former Egypt
President on 19/06/19 at SIAS Audio visual theatre. This session was handled by Sumayya
Jasmine M, second year JMC student. Almost 20 people attended including students and
teachers. Sumayya depicted a clear life picture of Morsi and politics of Egypt through his
words. Mr. Jamsheel Aboobacker and Akhilnadh HOD and Assistant Professor of mass
communication department respectively shared their thoughts in the later session.
READERS’ DAY
SIAS media school observed readers day with a session "The joy of reading” by Dr. Shonima
Govindhan Asst. Professor, department of microbiology. This session was held over a cup of
tea at college canteen. She shared the experiences of her reading and about the books she
read. Later a discussion was held on the books read by the students.
JULY
Induction day
SIAS media school conducted an induction day program for first year students on 1/7/19. The
whole department and parents of first year students were participated in the program.
Association secretary in charge Sumayya Jasmine welcomed the gathering. Head of the
department Mr. Jamsheel Aboobacker was presided over the program and he gives a brief
idea about the functioning of the department. Mr. Akhilnadh KS Assistant professor
introduced the new syllabus to the students and parents. Mr. Nazrullah khan, Assistant
professor he gave a sense of knowledge about the department history and alumni. Association
secretary Anju CB delivered vote of thanks.
Beginning school
SIAS media school arranged a beginning school for first year students from 2/7/19 to
5/7/19. Experts from different areas like camera handling, English speaking, translation,
reporting and editing , pagination, and web searching etc. handled sessions. The alumni of
department were the guests. Both second year and first year students were participated in the
7 day programme. First session was about photography and videography was handled by Mr.
Shajahan KE and Mr. Naseef Nanath on 2/7/19. This session introduced for understanding
the camera techniques and visual language. Second session was the art and craft of
translation. It was handled by Mr. Sreekumar HOD, Department of English on 3/7/19. Third
session was pagination and InDesign. It was handled by Mr. Akhilnath KS assistant professor
department of mass communication and journalism. It was an afternoon session on 3/7/19.
Fourth session was reporting and editing was handled by Head of the department Mr.
Jamsheel aboobacker and Mr. Nasrulla khan. Fifth session was addressing letters. It was
handled by Dr. Abdul Razak P, Assistant professor of English department. Whole sessions
were very helpful and gave basic knowledge about the core and frontier areas of mass
communication.
SPOTLIGHT RELEASE PROGRAM
Monthly visual productions of June was released on 09 th July at JMC AVT. HOD of
Management department Mr. Shamseer Babu inaugurated the program and screening of the
productions held later. Student coordinator Ms. Sukanya played the role of Curator. Alumni
members and budding film makers of the department Mr. Hussain Faris and Mr. Amir
Pallikkal shared their industry experience. HOD of the department Mr. Jamsheel C was
presided over the function.
‘Basheer The Man’
In association with SIAS NSS Unit the department had conducted the screening of the
documentary “Basheer the Man” directed by MA Rahman at JMC AVT on 05/07/19. The
program was a tribute to great writer Vykom Muhammed Basheer commonly called as
Beypore Sulthan on his 25th death anniversary. A commemorative talk and discussion held
after the screening. Students performed a drama based on the characters of his writings.
CAMPUS NOW RELEASE
Principal Dr. PV Basheer Ahmed released the monthly publication ‘Campus Now’ of the
department at JMC AVT on 12 th June.
FILM WITH FILM MAKER
The department proudly conducted ‘film with film maker’ program on 16th july at JMC AVT.
SIAS Media School Alumnus and national and international award winning film maker Mr.
Zakariya Muhammed was the chief guest. His famous film ‘Sudani from Nigeria’ had
screened in the morning. The interaction with him was an eye opening for the film aspirants
of the department. Department HOD Mr. Jamsheel C honored him for his achievements.
PANEL DISCUSSION
SIAS Media School Conducted a panel discussion on Union and State annual budget with the
assistance of commerce department and in collaboration with Economics department. Mr.
Jamsheel C played the role of moderator and Mr. Shanavas from Commerce Department, Ms.
Ranjini from Economics department and Mr. Amalraj from Journalism department was the
panelists. Students from all three departments actively participated in the discussion. The
program was held at Seminar hall on 17/07/19
RAIN WALK
As part of the orientation program the department has conducted a rain walk through the hills
of Vahzyoor with the guidance of Mr. Hamidali Vazhakkad, famous environmental activist
and the president of Friends of Nature, a Calicut based NGO. It was a program initiated to
inculcate an environment friendly mindset among the students on 08/07/2019.
MEET THE AUTHOR
SIAS Media School and SIAS Readers forum jointly organized the meet author program on
18/07/19 at JMC AVT. Famous young poet Ms. Likhitha Das was the guest. She talked about
her poems and its plots. Readers’ forum conveners Ms. Sreevidhya and Ms. Akhila were
present. Young poet and JMC faculty member Mr. Nazrullah recited the famous poems of the
gues . Mr. Akhilnath and Mr. Jamsheel shared their thoughts. Active participation of the
students especially girls was the main highlight of the program.
MONTHLY FILM FESTIVAL
Monthly film festival in memory of famous cinematographer M J Radhakrishnan was
conducted on 25/07/19 at JMC AVT.
SPOTLIGHT RELEASE
Monthly visual productions launching program conducted on 30/07/19 at JMC AVT. HOD of
Islamic Finance department Mr. Naji Naseem inaugurated the program. 15 productions from
different streams such as short film, documentary, news bulletin, interviews etc. were
released.
August
Academic lecture
Jawed Hussain Ahdal (Media One TV Online) delivered an academic lecture on the topic
‘Effective Browsing for Social Science Research’ on 02/08/2019 at JMC AVT. The program
was a joint venture with Commerce and Islamic Studies departments.
MONTHLY FILM FESTIVAL
Monthly film festival conducted on the topic ‘Kashmir: The continuing Act of Divide and
Rule’ on 26/08/2019 at JMC AVT.
INTERACTION WITH SUBJECT EXPERT
An interactive session held with academic expert Dr. Sudheer S Salam ( Asst. Professor,
Malayalam University Tirur) on 27/08/2019 at conference room. The interaction was helpful
for the students understand the course learning outcome of the subjects.
AMANTRYA
Farewell program for the batch 2017 – 2019 was conducted on 29/08/2019 at JMC AVT.
ONE DAY DIGITAL MEDIA TRAINING WORKSHOP
Journalism and Mass Communication Department of Safi Institute of Advanced Study(SIAS) has conducted a one day workshop programme on digital media marketing. We have a good opportunity to find our career in digital media marketing, said Mr. Muhammad Faiz K.T, Co founder, CEO-Adictues Digital thoughts. The morning session mainly focused on the theory part of digital marketing and afternoon session on its practical application . Mr. Faiz introduced digital marketing, affiliated marketing and social media marketing mainly through facebook and instagram. The strategy behind digital marketing is "where we are, where we want to be and how we do"Mr. Faiz highlighted. Mr. Nazarullah Vazhakkad (assistant proffessor of JMC)presided over the session.
6TH ANNUAL THESIS CONFERENCE
6th Annual Thesis Conference was conducted on 9th and 10th September. Scholars from
various colleges under the University of Calicut presented their thesis. Salma C, 2nd year
student, JMC was the program coordinator. The function was inaugurated by Mr. Abhilash
Mohanan, Senior News editor, Media one and there was an interactive session with him on
the topic 'Media and Marginalized in Kerala Context'. On 10th September SIAS Media School
conducted a talk by Mr. Muhammad Musthafa, (Assi. Prof. Dept of Mcj, Farook college) on
the topic Anatomy of social science research. The young scholar award was bagged by Ms.
Husna K Latheef from Kalppatta Govt college.
WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH
On October 11th 2019, SIAS Media School hosted a workshop by Mr. Muhammad Musthafa,
(Assistant Professor Department of MCJ, Farook college) on the topic Anatomy of social
science research. Under the guidance of renowned guest the session was helpful particularly
for Final Year students who were about to commence their PG Dissertation. The facilitator
of the session holds mastery over the topic and hence comprehensive the session was. The
program officially began with inaugural function by Mr. E P Imbichikoya (Principal, SIAS) and
department faculties including Mr. Jamsheel C (HOD, JMC), Mr. Akhilnath KS (Assistant
Professor) and Mr. Nazarulla P were present at the session. Student representative Mr. Basil
CK thanked the facilitator after the session on behalf of whole department.
INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON DISASTER DOCUMENTATION
On 23rd October 2019, the International Workshop on Disaster Documentation under the
guidance of Dr. Samantha L Montano was held. She was invited being Assistant Professor at
School of Public Administration, USA. The session was planned since series of floods hit
Kerala In the years 2018 and 2019. Department was determined to train and draw student
awareness on Disaster Documentation and its importance. The session was inaugurated by
honourable principal Mr. EP Imbichikoya in which participation of whole student was
ensured.
WORKSHOP ON SCRIPT WRITING
On 4th November 2019, under the guidance of Mr. SUDEVAN PP a one day workshop on
script writing was held at JMC AVT. Sudevan is a notable Independent film maker from
Malayalam Film Industry whose first feature film got awarded with Kerala State Film
Awards. His way of film making is by crowd funding which was propounded by legendary
film maker John Abraham. Sudevan trained students on the basics of script writing and
storytelling. As expected, the workshop was successful in fulfilling the expectations of film
aspirants. Department faculties, interested students from other department also took part
in the workshop.
ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON ‘MUSIC AND RESISTANCE: UNDERSTANDING THE
LOCAL AND GLOBAL BEAT’ WITH RESMI SATEESH
SIAS media School conducted a one-day exclusive workshop on resistance music. The
module is designed to give an overview of the tradition of resistance music in the local
culture and across the globe, with their crucial nuances in consideration. It has been a long-
time dream for Sias media School to organise a workshop and performance on the theme of
Music and Resistance; this was the first step towards the larger dream of a regular annual
event which we want to call MUSIC MUTINY. Amazingly gifted singer and activist Resmi
Satheesh guided the audience through the history of resistance music from the Afro-
American traditions to our own folk songs, screening occasional videos. The afternoon
session was unforgettable as it included power-packed performances by Resmi Satheesh,
rapper-lyricist-actor Haris Saleem, uniquely wonderful Manikantan and many more,
including the budding singers of SIAS Music Club.
WORKSHOP ON ENHANCED DESIGNING SKILLS
SIAS Media School hosted a one day design workshop on 5th March 2020, under the
guidance of our mentor Naseef Nannath .The students were provided with practical classes on
the subject from 10:30am to 4:00pm. InDesign is a professional software that will be a
prominent requirement for students pursuing Journalism when they chose to work at
professional media institutions. Department is fully determined to train students to cope up
with professional environments. Learning and practising for mastery is always engaged
among students.
ANALYSIS OF KERALA STATE BUDGET, 2020
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication on February 11th 2020, hosted a
comprehensive analysis session on the Kerala State Government budget 2017 which was
presented by the then finance minister Dr. Thomas Isaac. The session was inaugurated by
Mr. Abdul Samad C, Assistant professor Department of Computer Science. The discussion
panel was comprised of Mr. Mr. A.K Shanawas (Assistant Professor,Dept. of Commerce), Ms.
Ranjini KM (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Economics) and Mr. Nazarulla P (Assistant
professor, Dept. of MCJ). Ms Zinaba Abdulrasaq, student of second semester MCJ
moderated the discussion in which active participation of students and faculties from
various departments were ensured.
DEBATE ON DELHI ELECTIONS
On February 13th 2019, SIAS JMC Department conducted a discussion on “Delhi election
analysis and changing political scenario”. The debate panel was comprised of Mr. Abdul
Samad C (Department of Computer Science), Mr. Akhilnath KS (Department of JMC) and the
session was moderated by student representative Mr. Vishnuraj (First year JMC). Delhi
election was of greater significance since it can be regarded as revolutionary change in the
political atmosphere of India as a whole. Students were directed to do study and analyze the
contemporary political conditions in detail to share their concerns and findings. A serious
discussion was held with the help of newspapers and other journals reporting Delhi election.

COMMEMORATIVE TALK ON SYED ALI SHAH GEELANI
A comemorative talk by Ms. Devaja Babu (Second Semester JMC) was hosted by SIAS
Media School about Syed Ali shah Geelani, the Kashmiri separate Hurriyat leader. The
session was held at Canteen in which a comprehensive memoir about him was delivered.
Students under the guidance of Mr. Jamsheel C (HOD, Department of JMC) take part in
active discussion and debates. He was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but
later on founded his own party by the name of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. The session was also
notable in criticaly analysing his political stands.
COMMEMORATIVE IRRFAN KHAN AND RISHI KAPOOR
SIAS Media School conducted a Commemorative speech as part of the sudden demise of
Indian actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor started as a child actor, aged three,
in his father’s hugely popular film Shree 420 (1955). But his proper debut came in Raj’s 1970
film Mera Naam Joker, playing the younger version of his father’s leading role. Despite his
status as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, Mr. Irrfan Khan had a reputation for
modesty and integrity and news of his death sent India into mourning, prompting actors, fans
and politicians from across the world to express their sadness at his death.The session was
chaired by Alumni of SIAS, Aswin KV (Assistant Professor,Marian College) on 6th May
through official Facebook Page of SIAS Media School.
JMC DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES IN LOCKDOWN PERIOD
On 20th April 2020, a short film named 'Aaraan' directed by 1st year PG student Thanseem N
K was launched by the renowned film actor Antony Varghese (Pepe) via his Facebook page.
The launching program was much anticipated ever since the teaser was released. The short
film opened to postivive reviews by gaining a good word of mouth from some prominent
persons from Malayalam film industry such as Zakariya, Muhsin Parari, Anees Nadodi etc.
The running time of AARAN is about ten minutes.
FILM APPRECIATION: ‘BABASAHEB AMBEDKAR’
Film appreciation sessions has been a routine academic activity for SIAS Media School from
older times itself. An online film appreciation programme based on the film ‘Babasaheb
Ambedkar’ was held on 23rd April 2020 via online adapting to the present pandemic
situation. Students were directed to watch the film and a discussion session was held at 7pm
with the active participation of students. The movie is repleted with assorted controversial
sequences and Gandhi is portrayed as a customary politician and the movie asserts that he
was against the ideology of Ambedkar’s view of Dalit politics. The movie wraps the whole
life span of Dr. Br Ambedkar from his childhood to conversion to Buddhism and later death.
Critical analysis of film was made possible through the active student participation. The
program was held under the guidance of department faculties.
WEBINAR ON ‘ECONOMIC IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN IN INDIAN ECONOMY’
On May 8, HOD of Economics Department, SIAS Mrs. Ranjini K delivered a Lecture on
‘Economic impact of Lockdown in Indian Economy’ through SIAS Media School Facebook
page. The program was initiated to make students engage in the learning and observing
process. The speaker’s conviction and comprehensive analysis was visionary so that students
can examine themselves and learn economic aspects. The department aimed to make use of
Information Communication Techniques in learning process to cope up with the pandemic
