7 Footnotes should be avoided wherever possible.

8 SI units should be used throughout in the preparation ofmanuscripts.

9 Illustrations: general. All figures, whether line drawings ormicrographs, should be numbered in a single series, in the orderin which they are referred to in the text. Each figure should benumbered separately (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.); where a figure hasseveral parte use capital roman letters (Fig. 1A, IB, etc.). Themaximum printed size for illustrations is 235 mm x175 mm. In general, figures should not exceed in size about one-half of this. Whenever possible, plan illustrations so that, eithersingly or grouped together, they will be the width of a whole page(168 mm) or a single column (81 mm).

10 Line drawings. Original drawings, in black India ink,should be submitted for reproduction, as photographic copiescannot always be used. They should not be more than twicecolumn width.

11 Micrographs should be submitted the same size as they areto appear. Where several micrographs are grouped together theyshould be mounted accurately on mounting board. Irregularlyshaped micrographs should be avoided.

12 Labelling on figures may be inserted by authors provided itconforms to the general style and size used by the journal.Alternatively, it may be inserted by the printer, in which caselabelling should be indicated either on a duplicate, marked set offigures or on tracing paper overlays bearing accurately markedoutlines.

13 Colour plates can be reproduced at the discretion of theeditors and will be printed free of charge if they are judgedessential. Authors should note that, apart from being expensive,colour plates add significantly to the production time of thejournal.
