The Bill of Rights

• After writing the Constitution, the framers of our government quickly realized that the document said nothing about the rights of the American people.

• So they created the first set of amendments, or changes, to the Constitution

• These changes became known as the “Bill of Rights”

The First Amendment

• The first amendment granted the following rights (SPPAR);

1. Freedom of Speech2. Freedom of Press3. Freedom of Petition4. Freedom of Assembly5. Freedom of Religion

Freedom of Petition

• Americans can petition the government for a change in their policies

Freedom of Press

• The press is protected fromgovernment censorship (the power to review, change, or prevent publication)

• Journalists cannot be arrested/punished for criticizing the government or public officials

• However, the press has the responsibilty to present the news ACCURATELY

Freedom of Assembly

• Americans have the right to assemble in protest, as long as it is done PEACEFULLY

Decided June 14, 1977 The Illinois Supreme Court denied a stay of the trial court's injunction prohibiting petitioners from marching, walking, or parading in the uniform of the National Socialist Party of America or otherwise displaying the swastika, and from distributing pamphlets or displaying materials inciting or promoting hatred against Jews or persons of any faith, ancestry, or race, and also

denied leave for an expedited appeal.

Freedom of Religion

• Americans are allowed to choosewhich religion, if any, they want to believe in

• This amendment separates church and state– Some interpret this to mean that religion should

play no role in government– Others interpret this to mean that the

government cannot establish an official religion or create laws to interfer with worship
