NUCLEAR ENERGY
Nuclear Explosion The Hiroshima explosion .
• Nuclear energy comes from mass-to-energy conversions that occur in the splitting of atoms larger than iron or the
joining of atoms smaller than iron .• Nuclear energy is produced naturally and in man-made
operations under human control. • Some nuclear energy is produced naturally. For example,
the Sun and other stars make heat and light by nuclear reactions.
• Nuclear energy can be man-made too. Machines called nuclear reactors , parts of nuclear power plants , provide
electricity for many cities. • The formula is E = MC 2
Nuclear Energy
Renewable or Non renewable
• Nuclear energy is non renewable . – It is non renewable because it’s a small amount on
earth & It can not be replaced .
• The burning of fossil fuels in emission of the poisonous carbon dioxide.
• There is no release of carbon dioxide at the time of nuclear reaction.
• High amounts of energy can be generated from a single nuclear power plant. Nuclear fuel is
inexpensive & easier to transport. • Nuclear power plants need less fuel than ones
which burn fossil fuels .
ADVANTAGES
• The nuclear energy produces radiation.• The nuclear radiation harms the cells of the
body which can make people sick , or even kill them.
• Nuclear reactors also have waste disposal problems.
• Nuclear reactors only last for about forty to fifty years.
DISADVANTAGES
Drum beats : steel cargo containers of solid transuranic radioactive waste left from research & production of nuclear weapons are stored at various U.S. locations.
Improper storage of nuclear waste .
DISADVANTAGE
ADVANTAGE
CLEAN ENVIROMENT
• Nuclear energy has just about the lowest effect on the environment because nuclear plants do not put out harmful gases & they require a relatively small space to operate . • Plants , animals , rivers , & habitats are not
harmed by nuclear energy .
Effects on the ENVIRONMENT
RADIATIONradiation is exposed & entered into the environment & can make people sick.
The future of Nuclear Energy in the US & around the World .
• There are 103 operational commercial nuclear power plants in the United States today . Nuclear Energy can help to
provide the electricity we need for today & the future in a safe way.
• Nuclear Energy will increase in the world, due to it being safe & efficient.
• With only a few notable exceptions they are typically operating very efficiently, that is, at high capacity factors, in
an increasingly competitive environment .
