III. General data guidelines
Pleasefindbelowsomeguidelineswhichhelptoensurethatyourartworkfilewill be reproduced correctly in the print. These tips apply to all applications.
a) Dimensions and forms of labels
ThebasisofasuccessfulIMLprojectistostartyourartworkfilewiththe correctlabeldimensions.Pleaseaskyourcustomerserviceforthecorrect keyline.YouwillthenreceiveaPDFfilewithsomeinformationonkeyline, bleedandareawithouttextortextlimitation.Youwillfindbelowabrief explanationofabove-mentionedparameters.Thepicturesontheright explain the text.
1. Keyline The keyline is generally known as dieline and recognisable by the red colour. Thisthinlinedefinestheformofyourartworkfile.
2. Bleed The bleed is symbolised by the grey stripe outside the keyline. Due to our printing and die-cutting tolerances, we need the graphic material going beyond the keyline;
> 2.5mmaresufficient,ifthelabeldoesnotneedtobedeformed. > 5mm are a minimum, if the label needs to be deformed. More information on deformation can be found on page 11.
Asastandard,thePDFfileshowsaminimumbleedof5mm.Pleasenote,thatthebleedissufficientforthefurtherprocessingofyourfile(5mm),i.e.deformation(5mm)ornodeformation(2,5mm).
3.Textlimitationorareawithouttext The text limitation is the light grey area within the keyline. It marks an area without text, logos and/or other important information on the label. Please make sure, that there is a minimumdistanceof3mm between the object/text and the keyline. Due to our printing and die-cutting tolerance, this distance needs to be strictly adhered to.

b)Sizeoftextandlinewidth
In case of the following characteristics, the size of the text and the linewidthneedtohaveatleastthefollowingvalues:
TEXT LINE WIDTH 1.positive- onecolour > 6pt 0,15mm 2.negative- onecolour > 7pt 0,20mm 3.positive multi-coloured > 7pt 0,20mm 4.negative- multi-coloured > 7pt 0,20mm

c) Images
Allimagesneedtohaveaneffectiveminimumresolutionof300ppi. Therefore, a change of the size of an image in the layout should notleadtoaresolutionoflessthan300ppi.Example:
Realresolution > 300ppi Magnificationfactor > 417% Effectiveresolution > 72ppi(<300ppi)

VI.Datamatrix
Apart from the one-dimensional bar code, there is the two-dimensional data matrix. The data matrix is a cell structureofwell-definedlightanddarkareas.Itcontainsmoreinformationthananone-dimensionalbarcode,because it is scanned in two directions. This data carrier can contain numeric and alpha-numeric data.
A data matrix can be broken down into two parts:
1. Findern Pattern Ontheonehand, thereisthe›FinderPattern‹.Thisisconstantinformation containing each data matrix so that it can be read bythescanner.The›L-FinderPattern‹(seedrawing)hasanL-shapedpatternanddefinestheorigin,theheightandthe width of the matrix.
The‘Clocktrack‹(seedrawing)isplacedattheothertwosidesand has an interrupted pattern.
Thevaluesofthe›L-FinderPattern‹andthe›Clocktrack‹arealwaysdifferent.Similartothe›ClearArea‹ofabarcode,adatamatrixcancontaina›QuietZone‹(seedrawing).Thisisabeltwith the width of a module round the matrix in the opposite colour ofthe›L-FinderPattern‹,whichensuresthatthescannerwillnotbeinfluencedbytheprintbehind.
PrePress Guidelines IML
PrePressGuidelinesIML//published05.2014 8
2. Data Region Ontheotherhand,the›DataRegion‹isanotherpartofthedatamatrix.Thisareacomprisesthevariableinfor-mation of the data matrix, determining the minimum dimensions of the matrix. This is the number of lines x the numberofcolumns.Example:Theword›datamatrix‹hasaminimumsizeof›16x16‹(without›QuietZone‹).
a) Creation of a data matrix
The dimensions of the data matrix are determined by the X-size and the desired information.
X-size TheX-size(sizeofthemodule)isthelengthofonesideofaline/asmallbox.
Minimum size 0.255 mm Standardsize 0.350mm Maximum size 0.615 mm
Information Thesizeofthedatamatrixisdeterminedbytheinformation.Themaximumsizeofa›DataRegion‹is24x24. Ifthedataquantityisbigger,acomplexmatrixof4or16matricesiscreatedsidebyside.
b) Delivery/generation of a data matrix
TheIMLpartnercopiesthedatamatrixdeliveredbyyouintothefinishedArtProfileorgeneratesthedata matrix. The data matrix can be generated in three different formats:
1.DataMatrixECC200 Thisisthestandard.Apartfromnumericvalues,thisformatcanalsocontainalpha-numericvalues. Thedesiredinformationisthedecisivefactorforthesizeofthematrix.
2. GS1 DataMatrix This code is not in the position to pass on a lot of information. We therefore recommend not to use this one.
3.QR Thisisthemostcomprehensiveversionofadatamatrix.Itcandisplayamaximumof255charactersofthe Latinalphabetor128oftheJapanesecharacters.Apartfromthat,anerrorcorrectionisavailableduring scanning.ThewidthoftheQuietZonecanbeadjustedasrequested.
Pleaseavoidtoplacethedatamatrixattheinjectionpoint. A deformation caused by the injection may lead to an incorrect reading of the data matrix.
c) Control of the data matrix
The data matreíx is read by a scanner. Youwillreceiveacontrollabelwithyourproofprint.
d) Details
This document is a brief explanation of the data matrix. If you are interested inacompleteoverviewofthesubject›datamatrix‹,pleasehavealookatthewebsite of GS1. VII.Printingoffrontandback
There is an important rule: Ifthereisprintingcolourorvarnishonthebacksideofalabel,itformsnobondwiththeinjectedpolypropylene.Thatmeans,thata100%coloursaturationatthebackhastobeavoidedaswellasanapplicationofprintingvarnishontheback.
Injectionpoint:Astemperature, flowandpressurearoundtheinjectionpointcanbeveryhigh, noprintingdataaretobeplannedtoappear at the back within an area of 1.5 to 2 cm around the injection point.Furthermore, ithastobementioned, thattherewillbenobondbetween label and polypropylene, if the printing data are positioned tooclosetotheedgeofthelabel.Wethereforerecommendtoleavea space of 0.5 cm to the edge of the labels. Doing this, a good bond with the polypropylene will be ensured at the outer rim of your pro-duct as well. The design of the artwork for the front is subject to our generalprovisions.Asfarastheartworkforthebackisconcerned, please note, that maximum 4 colours are possible.
Note:Donotconsideranoverprintingofcolours, becausecoloursaturation will be too high and adhesion with polypropylene becomes poorsothattheendproductwillshowblisters.Anoverprintingwouldalso lead to adhesion problems when printing the back.
Tip: > Neverplanoverprintingofdifferentcolours. > Minimisethenumberofcolours(maximum4colours). > Lowcoloursaturation. > Pleasemakesure,thatthereissufficientspacewithoutprinting.
