plain thoughts
caring ministry
Ever have those times when you want to say to God, “enough is enough!” It may
not be huge ordeal you’re going through, it could just be lots of little things that
pile up. It can feel overwhelming. I’ve been feeling a bit of that lately, and it
takes some purposeful effort sometimes to get my head right with who I am, who
God is, and who I’m called to be.
Of course, here recently we’ve been learning about “half-truths,” which can
quickly come to mind when we get buried by life. Sayings like, “God doesn’t
give us more than we can handle” can make me just try to plow through on my
own power—and that means I never ask God to enter into the mix. I might actually find my way through,
but my relationship with God will not be as strong. God really wants me to turn to him, give him my
burdens, and find rest for my soul.
I don’t know about you, but it’s curious to me how I get myself moving further away from God in the midst
of my busiest times when it makes more sense to move closer to Him! John Wesley (if I remember this
correctly) said he would pray for an hour to begin each day, and if he had a busy day ahead, well then, he’d
pray for two hours. That’s really the better way to live into these busy times. It’s always better to take time
to invite God into our reality, because God is faithful and God will hear that cry.
What about you? Are you finding yourself drawing closer to God? Or, are you trying to do too much on
your own?

Don’t Be Overwhelmed with Worry
I don’t know if you are like me, but I can’t help being a worry-wart about certain situations in my life from time to time. There is so much bad news that we see on our televisions going on in the world today. We see natural disasters, political strife, crime, terrorism—just to name a few.
In our personal lives we also have worries. Will our children and grandchildren find happiness and success? Will I have the financial resources to carry me through retirement and take care of me as I age? Will my life have a positive impact on the world?
If we are not careful, we could realistically consume all of our time worrying about these questions and those current events. But Jesus came to free us from worry, fear, and doubt. He gave us the secret of finding joy and peace in our lives through having faith in his teachings and examples. Through our faith we can feel our worries dissolve and be replaced by the peace that passes all understanding.
When you find yourself overcome with worry, take a minute or two to reread Matthew 6:25-34. “Our father in Heaven knows what we need. Be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and he will provide you with the rest.”

No Se Equivoca
no me falta ningún dedo! Por lo tanto, acuérdese siempre: ¡todo lo que Dios hace es perfecto, él nunca se equivoca!

discipleship
outreach ministries
Discipleship is the practice of being a Christ-follower through worship, prayer, study and acts of compassion and justice found in
witness and service. We become disciples as we practice living out our lives through knowing, loving and serving God in the world.
Five Marks of a Methodist: The Fruit of a Living Faith Fourth Mark: A Methodist Prays Constantly
On June 5, we noted the five marks of a Methodist. The first mark is A Methodist Loves God, the second mark of a Methodist is A Methodist Rejoices in God. Last week the third mark, A Methodist Gives Thanks. This week we explore: A Methodist Prays Constantly.
For indeed one “prays without ceasing” The Character of a Methodist, paragraph 8
John Wesley viewed prayer as a means of grace stating: “the chief of these means is prayer, whether in secret or with the great congregation.” Prayer creates and sustains our relationship with God which is at the heart of our discipleship.
Discipleship is first and foremost a relationship between Jesus and us. We are profoundly connected to God through Jesus Christ and that relationship is lived out in loving God through prayer. Wesley describes the Christian life in relation to prayer which is the way we create and sustain our relationship with God. Prayer is our response to God, for it is a mystery that whenever we pray we in some way are responding to a movement of the Holy Spirit within us. The heart of the disciple is attentiveness and devoting ourselves to prayer is the main way we confirm our desire to listen to God and be with God. The result of prayer is to put into action what we have received from God in prayer. All prayer, silent or spoken, historical, liturgical or spontaneous is valuable because it is “made on the foundation of our heart’s desire to be in communion with God.”
John Wesley knew and shares with us today that when we pray from our hearts we are being attentive to God. And as we are attentive to God we practice the presence of God in the midst of our daily routine and action. Steve Harper says, “Like the first apostles, we can turn with hope to the praying Christ (the one who hears from the Father and shares what he hears with us), and ask him to teach us to pray, knowing that this is something he longs to do.”

Thank You to Our Red Cross Volunteers
We, along with our Church, would like to pass on our sincere thanks for the hard work and dedication of our Church’s many Red Cross volunteers who served during the Tax day (April) and Memorial day (May) flooding events. The excellent team work and willingness to serve those in need was very evident and couldn’t have been done without your willing help and assistance. An experienced long time Red Cross volunteer said our Church’s shelters were the best run he had ever seen.

Invitation
Come to the table where we share our meal of faith, forgiveness and grace. Come to the table where
Jesus is host, inviting all who love him and love neighbor. Come and eat; come and be filled for all
are welcome.
Prayer of Confession (screens)
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by
what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole
heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in
your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Silence
Assurance of Pardon
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you
in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God! Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a
good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, creator of
heaven and earth.
Almighty God, Creator of the universe, Ruler of all nations, Judge of all flesh, you have placed us,
your people, in this land made rich with rivers, forests, mountains, and creatures great and small.
Here, you set before the founders and pioneers of this nation an opportunity beyond measure to build
a realm of justice, peace, and freedom.
Here you continue to call your people, freed from the law and baptized into Christ Jesus,
to be a sign of your reign in all the world. For such a place, such a vision and such a calling we
give you thanks, praying we may ever join afresh the dreams you set before us as we join with your
people in every land on earth and with all the company of heaven in your unceasing praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Above all we give you thanks for the gift of your Son Jesus Christ, who sends us into the world
to declare the good news of your kingdom to every creature: justice to all peoples, good news to the
poor, release for prisoners, sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed.
On the night before he was arrested and sentenced to death by the authorities of his own nation,
he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body
which is given for you.”
When supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Drink from
this, all of you; this is my blood of the covenant poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sins.”
And so we remember and proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
We pour ourselves out before you in praise and thanksgiving, a holy and living sacrifice in union with
Christ’s offering for us.
So pour out your Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make Christ known to us in the
breaking of this bread, and the sharing of this cup. Renew our fellowship in him, that we may be for
the world his body poured out for the world at this time in this nation, and at that great banquet in the
fullness of your new creation where justice flows like rivers, righteousness like an ever-flowing
stream, where none shall hunger or thirst, neither shall they learn war anymore.
By him, with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours,
almighty God,
now and ever. Amen
And now with the confidence of children of God let us pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
