By Cyndy Klepinger, President

Recently I was riding on a bike path, and another cyclist started to enter the flow of traffic without looking to see if another cyclist was behind her. I po-litely shouted, “On your left!” Nothing. I then rudely shouted a few times, “On your left.” She finally heard me, stopped and said, “Were you talking to me, I didn’t hear you.” What??? You are riding a bike on a path, wearing headphones with music turned so loud you can’t hear someone shouting – and to top it off, you’re not wearing a helmet! I politely tried to explain that I was worried for her safety as well as mine as she pulled right out in front of me . . . you all know the “speech.” She then told me to “f@#*K off! Not only once, but several times.

It’s sad that many cyclists respond to other cyclists in this manner. It’s sad because their behavior is not only en-dangering their safety, but ours.

We should all make an effort to ride safe, as well as to help educate other riders the importance of riding safe. Here are a few safety reminders that we all need to incorporate into our rid-ing. (Yes, I am guilty of not always rid-ing safe, are you?)

While riding on paths,

Pass others on the left by slowing down, giving an audible warning such as calling out, “Excuse me, passing left”, and waiting for a reaction before passing.

Move off the pathway when stopping.

Always travel at a safe speed. Faster users may want to consider alternate routes to ensure the safety of all users.

While biking on the streets:

Look, Signal & Look Again Use hand signals to let drivers and other bicyclists know where you’re going. Look and make eye contact. Don’t assume drivers will stop.

Obey all Traffic Laws & Lights

Stay Alert Keep a lookout for obstacles in your path.

For more safety ideas, turn to page 3 where there is a Colorado Bike Law info-graphic, which was produced by Ramos Law Firm. The graphic is a great reference for all cyclists ̶ new or experienced.

NOTE: By sharing this info-graphic does not mean that DBTC endorses this business.

We need you to be involved in the Denver Bicycling Tour Club! We have several volunteer opportunities as well as a paid job. Without you, our Club would not exist. Communications Director With a goal of improving the various avenues of communication with our members, the Board has de-veloped a new position of Communications Director that we hope to have in place by August/September 2017. This person will be responsible for a wide range of communications matters within DBTC as well as public relations issues with other organizations and media outlets. Major duties shall in-clude timely production of the DBTC newsletter, drafting email blasts to members, oversight of club postings via social media (MeetUp, Yahoo groups, Facebook), partnering with Webmaster on website enhancements and other communications related tasks as required. Since this position requires specialized skills with design/publishing software and public rela-tions, a $250 monthly stipend will be given. Interested members should sub-mit a resume of their qualifications by July 17 to [email protected]. For a job description, visit: http://www.dbtc.org/COMMUNICATIONS-DIRECTOR

Event Coordinator We need a volunteer to help manage DBTC’s outreach efforts, which include Bike to Work Day and the Subaru VeloSwap. The job involves coordinating the details of events, recruiting and managing the volun-teers to staff events, and setting up and tear-ing down the exhibit display. VeloSwap is Saturday, November 4, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. While the rewards are non-monetary in na-ture, you will gain the satisfaction of making a difference, as well as promoting the joys of bicycling. BONUS: You meet some great people! Information Coordinator After several years as Information Coordina-tor, Cindy Ferry wants to pass on the re-sponsibilities of managing the Club’s infor-mation requests. The job involves answer-ing emails from individuals asking about the Club as well as forwarding on other email messages to Club officers. For more information on these positions, contact Cyndy Klepinger at matilda8@ msn.com or 303-394-4962.

Ride leader Ride leaders are the heart and soul of our rides program. Our ride leaders keep our calendar filled with great rides throughout the year. We welcome you to join the ranks! If you have an idea for a new ride, are inter-ested in helping others ride, or don't see your favorite rides listed, consider volunteer-ing to lead a ride or two – or more! WHERE TO BIKE . . . OR HIKE! An online map of more than 39,000 miles of trails in Colorado was recently launched. The interactive map gathered every hiking, biking and multiuse trail in Colorado and put it in one location.

The Colorado Trail Explorer was developed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and includes 17,099 trails and 1,431 trailheads. It also shows 5,683 miles of hiking trails, 6,821 miles of mountain biking trails, 24,906 miles of motorized trails and un-paved roads, and 1,746 miles of paved bike trails.

The online tool allows users to search for trails by name or to simply pan and zoom to explore trails across the state. Trails and roads in the map are color-coded to indicate their primary use, such as trails that allow only horses and hikers, those that allow mountain bikes and other bicycles, those that allow motorized access, and those designated as urban bicycle routes.

DBTC would like to have a team ride in the Pedal the Plains. The route for the sixth edition of Pedal the Plains will loop through Kersey, Keenesburg, Brush and will cover 177 miles from September 15-17. Pedal The Plains is more than a bicycle tour; it’s a traveling party packed with boot-stomp’n live music, beer gardens, delicious and locally-sourced food, interactive educational exhibits, and a touch of state fair fun! The 3-Day Tour will take participants on a 177-mile adventure as they cycle through countryside woven together like a quilt stitched with golden, chocolate and emerald patches. If you are interested in being part of the PTP Team, contact Cyndy Klepinger @ [email protected].

Saturday, July 1st 8:00 am INT-H2-35 + or -Meet Ellen Fitzpatrick (720-209-2269) at the parking area at Bear Valley McDonalds on southwest side of Sheridan and Dartmouth Ave. We will ride the Bear Creek trail East and then South along the Platte and South out to the Chatfield Marina. Bring a snack or some money to purchase a snack at the Mari-na and then we’ll head back. I'm slow up the dam but will keep a brisk pace along the bike path.

Sunday, July 2nd

8:30am; INT-H2-40. “Powhaton Rollers” Join Mark Pawlak at Cake Crumbs 2216 Kearney ST Denver for 8:30am sharp departure. We will head east on Smith, 26th Ave and turn south on Powhaton, returning via Jew-ell, and city streets. The ride is on city streets with low/moderate traffic and country roads with low traffic. This will be a fast intermediate ride with average moving speed of 14 mph (which means we will be going 15-17 on the flats), with few stops to regroup. Ride updates posted on MeetUp.

9:00 am FUN-H2-25-NW NEW & IMPROVED WESTMINSTER CLASSIC Meet Jeff Krinsky (720-373-9107) for an exciting ride full of unexpected twists, turns, and surprises...and now with BRAND NEW TRAILS. In May we had to revise this ride as we headed east into dark rain clouds so let’s try it again as the forecast looks good! We will meet at the parking lot WEST of the baseball diamonds in Westminster City Park. (Directions: From US 36 and Church Ranch Blvd/104th Ave. exit, east on 104th about 1/2 mile to the first left after the West-minster Blvd light, then go LEFT again into the parking lot. The address for the park is 10455 Sheridan Blvd but note again that we are meeting WEST of the buildings and baseball fields.) This ride takes us through the West-minster, Northglenn, and Thornton area, including the Farmer’s Highline Canal, Lee Lateral, and Grange Hall Creek trails.

Monday, July 3rd No scheduled ride. You can post a ride on MeetUp or the Yahoo group - or both. Tuesday, July 4th

No scheduled FUN or INT ride. You can post a ride on MeetUp or the Yahoo group - or both. 8:30 am MTB- P2 T1.5 Length: 10 miles+ Join Carol Bennett (720-425-6124) at Pronghorn Park, Highlands Ranch Douglas County East West Trail and Highlands Ranch High Points Trail System. Both of these trail sys-tems have spectacular views of the Front Range from many parts of the trail. To get there: From C-470 Exit Broadway and head south, (towards Highlands Ranch). Follow Broadway until the traffic light at Wildcat Reserve Parkway and turn to the right. (It’s about two miles.) Turn on to the next street on the left- Weather’s Field Way. Prong Horn Park is about 1/2 mile south of Wildcat Reserve Parkway on Weath-er’s Field Way. The park is on the right side of the street. Park in the parking lot or on the surrounding street. There usually is ample parking. The East/West Trail head is across the street from Prong Horn Park. Bicycle Type: Front shock suspension is recommended, but a hybrid is suitable on the East/West Trails and some parts of the High Point Trail System. The ride drops in at the East West trail from Prong Horn Park. We will ride the trail for about a mile and take a sharp right at a three way trail junction. We will follow a downhill portion of the trail on the East/West Trail for about 2 miles. We will meet at a gate that is to the private Back Country Trail System. I must be there when we enter the gate and we must ride together as a group as the trails are for residence of HR and their guests. There are many loops and trails that total several miles. We can study the trail map and decide the routes that the group would like to ride. I stop at all trail junctions and will wait until I account for all riders. The trails are well maintained and have minimal exposed roots and loose rocks. The trails turns are banked and have plenty of bumps and curves to excite even the most skilled cyclists but are easy enough that an advanced beginning mountain biker would be comfortable with most of them. Caution must be observed as many of the trails wind through scrub oak and there are blind corners and hills. Use of a bell is highly recommended. The High Point Trail System crosses open grazing land. I have seen cattle and their “road apples” across the trails.

Wednesday, July 5th

8:30 am Leisure/“Roses” H2-6.5 miles NW New Clear Creek Canyon Trail Only 6.5 miles but worth it!!! Meet Richard Gieseler (303-722-1475) at West 6th and Kipling furniture store parking lot at the east end to car-pool to Mayhem Gulch on West US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon on the east end of the Clear Creek Canyon Trail.
