Our Penance Service begins with communal prayer followed by opportunities for individual confession with many priests in English or in Spanish. Through the sacrament of Penance, God offers mercy and forgiveness. In response to this gift, we are called to become vehicles of Christ’s love, making amends and restoring justice and the bonds that have been broken. Healed and forgiven, we are sent to work for peace, justice and love in our communities and world. They are a contempla- tive order of nuns and are dedicated to praying for the needs of our community and our world. They profess an allegiance to Jesus Christ by living a consecrated life of silent, solitary prayer in a small community of sisters where each day they strive to help one another grow in love and joy, depth and devotion as they journey toward their goal: union with God. We are blessed to have two Carmelites, Sr. Ancilla and Sr. Jane with us on Friday, March 8th for a talk following our soup supper. They will talk about Lent and also about their lives at the Carmelite Monastery. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about these special women. We invite all parishioners to join us for An Evening with the Carmelites Friday, March 8th 7:00pm in the Parish Hall Right after soup! fast when they’re going out to play but move

Penance, aka confession, is the sacrament of the forgiveness of sin.
It has many benefits...here’s one: Closeness to God. Confession helps you realize that you have a close connection to God and receive his grace through the sacraments. What can be better than knowing God’s on your team, or, to be less arrogant about it, that you are on God’s.
Make prayer
work for you
Deeper prayer is one
pillar of Lenten practice,
but note it is deeper
prayer, not necessarily
more praying. A billboard
once proclaimed: “Pray. It
works.” True, but prayer can be easily misunder-
stood as a kind of spiritual magic that gets you
what you want if you do it just right, often
enough, loud enough. As a matter of fact, while
prayer does make demands—attention and si-
lence—it’s really the Holy Spirit who prays within
you, making you malleable, beautiful, and useful
for God’s purpose. Moments of silent listening
may not make your dreams come true, but prayer
“works”—when you allow God to work in you.
—TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: Daily renewal for busy Catholics
Cultivating Our Lives The challenge of Lent is urgent: “repent or perish; bear fruit or be cut down.” But what does this urgency mean for most of us who are scarcely huge sinners! Although murder and adultery and apostasy (giving up the faith) and other public, scandalous, heinous sins are as much a part of our church now as they were when the early church practiced public penitence, the vast majority of us are just common sinful folk. Sometimes it’s not so obvious to us of what we must repent. We are sort of stuck—like the fig tree; it was still alive, just wasn’t doing much. The challenge of Lent is to allow Jesus to “cultivate” and “fertilize” us so that we know of what we are to repent and can begin bearing even more fruit. Heeding the message of the Gospels is one way we prune ourselves of sins. The Gospels are the measure against which we can examine our daily living. Another way is to pay attention to the peo-ple around us. They can reflect back to us behaviors we need to change as well as draw us out of ourselves to act in charity and graciousness. Christian living—and repent-ing—isn’t something undertaken in isolation. It always in-volves other people. They are the “examples” who teach us what needs to change in us so that we can bear fruit—even a bumper crop! —Living Liturgy
