Sample Day by Day:
Day 1: Sunday - May 17 - Depart for Italy Depart New York for your overnight flight to Palermo. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board. Day 2: Monday - May 18 - Palermo Welcome to Palermo! Transfer to hotel. You will have time to explore the neighborhood with Anne Marie. Take a short walk and enjoy a coffee and, what she has dubbed 'the best cannoli in Sicily'. Visit the beautiful Giardini Inglesi gardens across from our hotel. After check in, take a short drive to Mondello Beach and enjoy the afternoon to stroll the promenade taking in the beautiful landscape of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Monte Pellegrino. Return to Palermo for a welcome dinner at Trattoria Altri Tempi and overnight at Hotel Excelsior Hilton. Day 3: Tuesday - May 19 - Palermo & Erice This morning, wake up in the fascinating city of Palermo, the capital of the Island of Sicily. We’ll tour this beautiful city in the morning with a local guide and visit: Teatro Massimo, the old city, Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, Palatine Chapel in Palazzo Reale, and Vucciria Market. At the end of the tour, sample a variety of Palermo street food at Vucciria Market. Travel with Anne Marie to the picturesque, medieval town of Erice, located on top of Mount San Giuliano, overlooking Tra-pani from a superb scenic location. From one of the castles, on a clear day, you can see Africa! Enjoy free time to wander the ancient, narrow streets, and visit some of the famous home-made pastry shops, world-famous for marzipan candies, and almond and pistachio pastries. Return to Palermo. This even-ing we will have the opportunity to enjoy an opera performance of Un Ballo in Maschera (optional at additional cost) at Italy's largest opera house, Teatro Massimo, recently made famous in the Godfather III. Transportation will be provided and Anne Marie will escort you. Return to Hotel Excelsior Hilton. Day 4: Wednesday - May 20 - Palermo – Marsala – Menfi On the western part of Sicily, travel the coastal salt road to Marsala taking in the fascinating landscape dotted with salt pans and windmills. Visit the Marsala Salt Museum (Saline Et-tore Infersa) and take a short ferry ride to the Island of Mozia (both visits are optional). The ancient city of Mozia was one of the most important Phoenician and Carthaginian settlements in the Mediterranean. Enjoy lunch at Trattoria da Pino in Marsala, a location close to the famous area where Giuseppe Garibaldi and his troops landed during the Italian Unification in 1860. After lunch, travel to Menfi for a cooking class at Tenuta Stoccatello with Chef Giuseppe Barcellona (dinner included after class). Overnight at Tenuta Stoccatello, Menfi. Day 5: Thursday - May 21 - Menfi – Selinunte – Vittoria – Ragusa This morning, tour the amazing Greek ruins at Selinunte which offer an unequaled view of the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you can walk inside the Temples! One of Sicily's great Greek ar-chaeological sites, situated by the sea in the south-western corner of Sicily, these isolated ruins have stood abandoned for most of their history. Drive to Vittoria to Azienda Agricola Cos Winery for a typical Italian wine tasting, including platters of antipasti. Travel to Ragusa to our hotel. After check-in, if time permits, we will make a quick visit to the historic center of
Modica, known for its chocolate, inspired by the Aztecs during the Spaniard reign in this area. Overnight at Hotel Poggio del Sole, Ragusa. Day 6: Friday - May 22 - Ragusa Ibla – Noto - Siracusa – Taormina This morning a local guide will accompany us to Ragusa Ibla, recently made famous by the international television hit, Mon-talbano. Ragusa's Baroque architecture has earned it (as has Noto), UNESCO World Heritage status. The tour will continue to Noto, which is quite simply, the apotheosis of Baroque town planning and architecture. Completely destroyed by the terrible 1693 earthquake, it was rebuilt from scratch on a new site, about 10km from the old centre. We will travel to Ortigia, a small island which is the historical centre of the city of Siracusa for lunch and free time. Lunch will be at Sicilia in Tavola Res-taurant. Travel to Taormina for overnight at Hotel Miramare. Day 7: Saturday - May 23 - Taormina – Catania – Castelmola – Taormina Wake up on the eastern side of Sicily in Taormina, the pearl of the Mediterranean and a popular tourist destination since the 19th century. After breakfast drive south to Catania for a guid-ed tour of the UNESCO site of Il Monastero di San Nicolò l'Are-na, the Benedictine Monastery and the Diocesan Museum, its collection and the Achillean thermal bath, discovered under the floor of Saint Agata's Cathedral. This site dates back to the 12th century. After the tour, travel to tiny Castelmola, a 10 mi-nute drive from Taormina. Enjoy lunch at La Taverna dell'Etna, boasting one of the best views of Mt. Etna. Floating 1,800 feet above sea level, these views take the word "scenic" to a whole new level. Along the cobblestone streets within the ancient walls, the 360-degree panoramas of mountain, sea, and sky are breathtaking. Return to Taormina for overnight at Hotel Miramare. Day 8: Sunday - May 24 - Taormina Anne Marie will accompany the group on a visit to one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, the Teatro Greco (the ancient theater of Taormina) in the morning followed by the Giardini della Villa Comunale gardens. Free to the public, the gardens are a stunning oasis in Taormina offering a variety of floral beauties, exotic trees and breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea. After visiting the gardens, enjoy an afternoon of free time and overnight in Taormina at Hotel Miramare. Day 9 Monday - May 25 - Departure Catania After breakfast, we will depart for our return flight back to the US, bidding “Arrivederci Italia!”
