Rabbinic ReflectionAs those who are regularFriday night Shabbat attendeeswell know, I do not often speakof politics from the bima, nordo I usually discuss politics inthe Bulletin. There are times, however, where this becomes anecessity. We are now living inthose times. This past week, the newly inaugurated
President, on International Holocaust RemembranceDay no less, issued an order that shut the USborders to all refugees for 120 days, and bannedentry for all nationals of seven specific Muslimmajority nations for at least 90 days, pendingfurther policy review. He also indicated ininterviews that refugees of one religion would beprioritized over refugees of other religions. Thisorder is not only unconstitutional, but flies in the faceof Jewish values, and indeed, human decency. I callupon President Trump to rescind the orderimmediately. I am joined in this call by every singleAmerican rabbinical seminary, every singlenational denominational organization, and everysingle national rabbinical organization, withoutexception (that includes Reform, Conservative,Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Trans-Denominationaland Renewal). We are joined by a nearlyunanimous chorus of Jewish organizations andleaders. Our Jewish tradition teaches that we are totake care of the stranger. The Torah commands thisof us 36 times--repeating the lesson more that another commandment in Torah. In Leviticus 19:34we read, “The strangers who reside with you shallbe to you as your citizens; you shall love each oneas yourself, for you were strangers in the land ofEgypt.” Exodus 22:21 states, “And you shall notwrong a stranger, neither shall you oppress them;for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” Wehave an obligation as Jews and as human beings touphold this principle. The last time the US had suchrestrictions on refugees, the Jews aboard the WorldWar II era ship SS St. Louis returned to war-tornEurope, where at least a quarter of the over 900denizens died in the Nazi concentration camps. Ourcry of “never again” is not just a Jewish cry. It mustbe the cry of a humanity that will not accept theracism and xenophobia that inform this misguidedpolicy directive. A policy that denigrates thehumanity of others will not make the world a saferplace. It just makes the world an angrier place, andanger does not give rise to safety. We are betterthan this!
Kol tuv,
Rabbi Jay Sherwood

Presidential PerspectivesOne of the primary
responsibilities ofcongregational leadership iseffective communication withmembers of the congregation. This involves primarycommunication and clarificationof disinformation should itbecome necessary. This month
I discuss the process by which we deal with rabbinicalcontracts.
Rabbi Sherwood’s contract ends June 30, 2017what are the steps necessary to renew this contract. Asbasic as it seems, the first step is a question. I recentlysat with Rabbi Sherwood and asked him if he wanted topursue another contract with Congregation Emanu El(CEE) to which he responded, “Yes.” That response setin motion the following events. The ExecutiveCommittee in its designated role as the temple’spersonnel committee, as set forth in the CEE bylaws, was convened (01/12/17) to determine if anothercontract should be offered to Rabbi Sherwood. Themajority vote of the personnel committee was in theaffirmative, to extend a new contract at the conclusionof the current contract. At the general board meetingheld January 19, 2017, the entire board was made awareof and asked to endorse the decision of the personnelcommittee. The Board of Directors unanimouslyendorsed the proposal. The next action in the process isthe creation of a new contract by the personnelcommittee. This will be submitted to Rabbi Sherwoodfor his review and through an iterative process duringwhich both parties consider each other’s proposals, afinal contract document will be produced. Thisdocument is then presented to the entire Board ofDirectors of CEE, as prescribed by the temple bylaws, for its approval. The power to accept or deny thecontract is vested in and will be determined by the entireCEE Board of Directors. The contract process, as I havedescribed above, will be carried out with the utmosttransparency and I encourage all congregants to contactme or members of the Executive committee withquestions pertaining thereto. Your input is encouragedand always appreciated!
Please be aware of these upcoming events at thetemple. On February 12th our 2017 Cantor’s Concertwill take place at 4:00 PM. The theme is “My FavoriteThings” and Cantor Bern-Vogel and friends willentertain us with an afternoon of religious and secularmusic. Call the temple office for tickets. I look forwardto seeing you there.

Mental Health AwarenessFebruary 2017 At the temple last
September, about 30Emanu El congregants, relatives, and friendsattended a 2 day courseon Mental Health FirstAid, taught and paid for
by the County of San Bernardino Department ofBehavioral Health.
Around that time, in this column, we mentioneda koala named ALGEE. ALGEE came from Australiabecause that’s where the concept of Mental HealthFirst Aid was developed and implemented throughoutthe society. Some Americans liked the idea and madeit America-friendly, and now it’s finding its waythroughout own society.
We’d like to get you acquainted with ALGEE.ALGEE guides us in taking care of someone with amental health crisis. Let’s take him step by step:
A – Assess for risk of suicide or harmL – Listen nonjudgmentallyG – Give reassurance and informationE – Encourage appropriate professional helpE – Encourage self-help and other support
strategiesWithout being professional ourselves, we canapproach a difficult situation in a careful way – askingsimple, direct questions, for example, to assess risk.‘How have you been feeling?’ ‘ What have you beenthinking about?’ And if signs indicate suicide or otherself-harm, ask clearly – ‘Have you been thinkingabout harming yourself?’
One thing ALGEE requests of us is that we staycalm and strong, gentle and accepting. Anyone in acrisis needs someone to lean on and trust. We can bethat person. We can listen with an open heart.
You likely know someone, a family member orfriend, who lives with mental illness. It’s not too hardto find some resources so that if an occasion arises, you could provide a telephone number or even a placeto go for urgent help. For example, there areCommunity Crisis Response Teams in San BernardinoCounty that provide assistance in the field andfollow-up services. There are also walk-in clinics inour valley, on the High Desert, and in the MorongoBasin. And there’s the 2-1-1 phone number for awhole host of referrals for food, housing, employment, health care and counseling. You can even check it outat www.211.org.
In coming months, we’ll get to know ALGEEeven better. It’s good to know we can be prepared.

Sisterhood Walk
Congregation Emanu El Sisterhood invites you to A Walk in Live Oak Canyon
Sunday, Rosh Chodesh, February 26, 2017, 10 am
As the first stirrings of Southern California’s spring appear, join Nancy Sidhu and Susan Damron for a walk on the trails of the Redlands Conservancy-managed Live Oak Canyon. We’ll meet at the temple by 10 am and car pool to Oakmont Park, our starting off spot. We can take the challenge and go up the ridge, or enjoy the level path to the left. Either way, we’ll be accompanied by birds and breezes.
Please bring with you not only comfortable shoes, a hat and water, but also at least one memory of a time – a moment, an afternoon, a vacation – when you connected with nature – an animal, a tree, the ocean – so we can share our stories and open ourselves to, perhaps, another encounter.
Contact Nancy Sidhu ([email protected]) for more information, or just show up for a delightful walk.
The sky and the grasses invite you outdoors as we enter the joyous month of Adar.
