Money that we give for the Budget pays for every- thing that the church approved to fund in our Missions and Ministry Plan for 2012 (if you don’t know what that covers, you can pick up a copy of the plan in the church office). This plan has a Building Maintenance budget ($65,000) that cov- ers ongoing repairs, services, inspections and preventative/seasonal maintenance to keep our campus open. Money that we give for Campus Im- provement, which should be in addition to our regular tithes & offerings, goes to fund one-time, capital projects to replace mechanical and infrastructure to keep our campus operating. For 2012, the Building & Grounds Committee identified nine possible pro- jects to be funded by Campus Improve- ment giving. We have completed three of these projects so far this year (I wrote about one of them, elevator sensor re- placement, in the June 24th issue of The Dove) and delayed one until next year. The largest project identified for this year was resealing of our parking lot, which should be done every three years. When the Building & Grounds Commit- tee (Carla McCormick is Chair; Lee Roy Ash, Jeff Black, Dan Case, Jerry Earney, and Steve Holm are the other members) reviewed this project, it was determined that the condition of the Nanz Avenue side of the parking lot required more than just patching and resealing; it needed to be repaved. So last month, our Facility Administrator Don Goodman, solicited bids for this project, which the Building & Grounds Committee reviewed and recommended two contractors to do the work: one for the paving and one for the sealing and striping. Late last week the Finance Committee approved the $58,079 expenditure for the project. If everything falls into place, we will do this project the week of August 13th; before we resume Wednesday schedule, Parents Day Out, and Weekday Pre- school. Your generous giving to Campus Im- provement is making this possible. It will improve the first impression we make with guests and benefit our less- mobile members who use that part of the parking lot. Thank you. For more information http://www.smbcadmin.blogspot.com

HUGG Highlights

Verlin Kruschwitz

Golden Living, St. Matthews

327 Browns Lane

Louisville, KY 40207 HUGGERs: John & Susan Hines

From humble beginnings in a German Methodist minister’s home to pastoring churches and helping to write the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message, Verlin “Krush” Krusch-witz has influenced countless indi-viduals in the Christian faith and has given shape to Baptist life for eight decades. The oldest of five children, Krush was born on July 12, 1914, in Edgerton, Ohio to Albin G. and Bertha Kruschwitz. Krush accepted Christ during a service in which his father was preaching in 1926. A Taylor University student who excelled in chemistry, Krush’s life was changed when studying the chemical elements. Krush says, “My first year when my professor talked about the elements, he said, ‘Before any of this, there was God.’ I had a life changing understanding of Genesis 1:1.” His second year he heard a ser-mon on God’s will. “I left that ser-vice and surrendered to preach,” recalls Krush. Krush graduated from Southern Seminary, where he earned the Th.M. in 1938 and the Ph.D. in 1942. He pastored Zion Baptist near Columbia, Ky.; Nebo Baptist near Madisonville, Ky.; and SMBC from 1941-52. In 1952 he became pastor of Severns Valley Baptist in Eliza-bethtown, where he served for 28 years. He was also Professor of Old Testament at Boyce Bible School from 1974-1993, where he served as Assistant Dean. Krush’s best memories during his pastorate include “the rapid expan-sion after the ‘37 Flood, getting married, baptizing my mother and father and two brothers, ordaining another brother, and moving the church to Grandview Avenue.” Krush was the first president of the KBC, and he worked with Herschel Hobbs and others to write the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. He also served on four SBC Boards. Krush was married to Ruth Bos-tick for 61 years until Ruth’s death in 2003. Krush has three sons: Billy (Marlis); Bob (Vicki); and Ken (Michelle) who are also SMBC members.

Custodian Needed Our church has an immediate need for a custodian. This is a part-time position. Candidates for this posi-tion must be available to work weekends and some weekday eve-nings. Also, must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The primary function is maintaining clean buildings and grounds and providing set-ups for scheduled events. The ideal candi-date would have some general cus-todial experience, attention to detail, and be self-motivated. Apply in person at the church office.

Farewell to the Sircars The Sircar family is saying good bye to friends at SMBC on their last Sunday together, August 12. Just days later, Gracia will leave for col-lege, Jonathan will enter Oneida and Subhro will return to In-dia. Susanna will remain to com-plete her studies. It will be quite a while before this family can be to-gether again. The WMU Council will be hosting a going-away recep-tion for the Sircar family at 1:00 pm in the foyer on August 12. Please come and express your love and well wishes.

Mhlanga Baby Shower Please join us in celebrating God’s blessings on the Sam and Judith Mhlanga family. The FISH Class will host a baby shower and recep-tion to honor the birth of Joseph Sam Mhalanga, Jr. in the Parlor at 1:00 pm on August 12. Light re-freshments will be provided while you have the opportunity to visit with Judith, the baby, and the rest of the family. Contact Lynn Chinn, 299-9873, for more information.

Chrismon Party Monthly Chrismon parties will be held the second Saturday of every month from now until the Christ-mas season in order to repair and replace the church’s Chrismon or-naments. We will be meeting in the Craft Room from 10-2 this Sat-urday, August 11. Lunch will be provided.
