In 1992 John established his practice by restoring a West Perth heritage building constructed in 1904 & created a vibrant & versatile architectural practice offering a personal and professional service with fresh innovative design solutions together with up to date practical and economical construction techniques. We were commissioned to design his own residence which would be his show piece to attract new work for his newly established building company in Perth. Shortly after the completion of his residence our Client was awarded by the Master Builders’ Association for “Best New Builder” for the 2003 Housing Excellence Awards. JOHN KANNIS & ASSOCIATES PTY LTD A R C H I T E C T S MULTI - RESIDENTIAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS Since 1992 John Kannis Architects has specialised in multi-residential housing developments with projects varying from Aged Persons Grouped Housing Developments for the Housing Authority through to private Retirement Villages for various charitable organisations. To date we have designed over 35 Retirement Villages (over 900 new units) & over 70 Government Housing Developments (over 500 new units). In 1994 we were awarded the honoured position of being nominated as the officially appointed Architects for the charitable organisation the 'Australian Pensioners League of WA (Inc.)', now known as Retirees WA (Inc.) to provide award winning affordable retirement housing to their members. Since this appointment we have successfully designed & administered project contracts for the construction of many retirement village developments & low care facilities throughout Western Australia. We have successfully negotiated numerous joint venture projects on behalf of our Clients with the Government of Western Australia in order to provide affordable retirement housing to the elderly. In 1997 John Kannis Architects were honoured with an award presented by the late Sir Charles Court, A.K., K.C.M.G., O.B.E. ‘in recognition of value contribution, expertise and assistance in the design and management of the Australian Pensioners’ League’s joint venture housing projects.’ In 1999 John Kannis was personally honoured with a ‘Life Member Award’ at the Australian Pensioners’ League’s Annual Congress ‘in recognition of the loyalty and devotion shown to the League.’

JOHN KANNIS & ASSOCIATES PTY LTD A R C H I T E C T S GOVERNMENT HOUSING John Kannis Architects have extensive experience with residential developments for the Housing Authority of WA (formally Department of Housing) and have provided architectural services for a range of housing project since 1992 until present. The Housing Authority provides rental accommodation to eligible households across Western Australia which we have provided our services for the construction of new rental units throughout the metropolitan area & South West of Western Australia. These projects vary from Single Persons & Family Units to Aged Persons (Seniors) Units or purpose designed mobility units for those tenants with a disability. We have designed, documented & provided contract administration services (& post administration services) to the Housing Authority for in excess of 400 new grouped housing units constructed over 60 sites. To date numerous Housing Industry Association & Master Builders Association awards have been presented for our Housing Authority projects. In addition to new construction for the Housing Authority John Kannis Architects have provided services for the refurbishment of rental housing for 3 major New Living Urban Revitalisation projects in Lockridge (1995 – 1999), Langford (1999 – 2004) & most recently in South Hedland (2006 – 2016). The South Hedland New Living project alone was valued at $270 million. Over the years these revitalisation projects received 4 awards from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (U.D.I.A.) Acknowledging the Achievement of Excellence in “Judges Award”. Collectively, John Kannis Architects have to date provided services for in excess of 800 Housing Authority units throughout the Perth metropolitan area, south-west & the north-west of Western Australia. The Housing Authority also provides accommodation for Government employees under the Government Regional Officers’ Housing (GROH) Program which we have provided our services for the refurbishment of numerous dwellings in the North West region of Western Australia to include Port Hedland, South Hedland, Karratha, Wickham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo & Newman.

Project value: $270 million. Our client JAXON Construction focused on delivering urban renewal through 4 core disciplines – land subdivision (1200 residential lots), home refurbishments (547 houses), infrastructure upgrades & community development. John Kannis Architects were presented with 3 Awards of Excellence from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (U.D.I.A.) in 2010, 2011 & 2104 for our Contribution to South Hedland New Living Urban Renewal Project Acknowledging the Achievement of Excellence in the Judges’ Award. A considerable understanding of the National Construction Codes & the relevant Australian Standards were paramount in order to provide the cyclonic design & detailing required as Port Hedland is located within one of the most severe cyclonic wind regions in Australia being Region D Terrain Category 2. Whilst providing our services on the South Hedland New Living project for over 10 years (2006 – 2016) working relationships have been formed with various builders & developers operating in the North-West of Western Australia due to our extensive experience in various towns with the Region C & D wind classifications. Our architectural services in the Pilbara & the Kimberley have since extended to Broome, Derby, Onslow, Karratha, Wickham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo & Newman and are continually expanding even broader throughout the North-West of Western Australia.
