Why a School Based Health Services at John Barsby?
• Many students do not have a Family Doctor
• Barriers to access care

Approach to School Based Wellness Centre
• Vision:
– Empowered, Healthy, and Resilient Youth
• Mission Statement:
– Provide low-barrier, seamlessly integrated health and wellness services which are responsive to, and co-designed by, students at John Barsby Community School.

Planning and Process

What assumptions did I make, and how did they pan out?
• Initial uptake and collaboration would be a slow process.
• High percentage of student population with poor access to primary health care services.

What assumptions did I make, and how did they pan out?
• Importance of building relationships between students and care providers.
• Assumed we could transfer model of care from community setting and apply to school setting.

Successes
• “The Wellness Centre is more than just a medical clinic. It’s a place where strong, trusting relationships are built” - Student

Staffing the Centre
• Centre staffed by; family physicians, public health nurses, child youth mental health worker, social worker/counsellor, and an administrative assistant.
• Refer to community support providers to help provide full circle care for the students.

Successes
• 36% of student population has accessed JBWC

Lessons Learned
• Collaborative partnership between 15+ organizations
• The presence of a welcoming place for students to discuss health and wellness can have a significant positive impact

Sustainability
• Physician compensation and appropriate physician support
• Development of funding sources for ongoing operations
• Regular reflection on common vision and goals
• Continuing evaluation and refinement
