TIPS 1-5

Protecting yourself from UV rays is important all year round, not just in the summertime. Even during the winter and on cloudy days, your skin is exposed to UV radiation.

1.) Always use sun protection, even when you don’t think you need it.

1.) Always use sun protection, even when you don’t think you need it. (Part 2)“We are seeing an epidemic of skin cancer and melanoma in this country and it is all due to sun exposure and the increased use of indoor tanning,” Dr. Schlessinger says. “Protecting your skin is a huge part of this, but avoiding unsafe exposures while wearing good sunscreen and clothing goes a long way.”

1.) Always use sun protection, even when you don’t think you need it. (Part 3)Make sure to wear a strong sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 and protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Avoid indoor tanning and apply extra sun protection during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV exposure risk is highest.

Over time, your face will accumulate excess dead skin cells, giving you a dull complexion and preventing the maximum penetration of your treatment products. The uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, also attracts dirt, oils and bacteria. For this reason, it is important to exfoliate on a regular basis.

2.) Exfoliate at least weekly.

Women should exfoliate at least weekly and even more if possible. While a manual exfoliation such as a 'buff-puff' has been advocated in the past, this can often lead to germs on the pad and damaged skin, Dr. Schlessinger said.

There are other great options available today, such as the Clinicians Complex Microdermabrasion Cream and LovelySkin products, which contain Amino Fruit Acids to provide gentle yet effective exfoliation. Dr. Schlessinger also recommends the Clarisonic Mia, a compact sonic cleansing brush that removes makeup, impurities and excess oil while gently massaging skin.

Dermatologists and estheticians have tools at their disposal that average individuals don't have. They are able to use microdermabrasion machines to remove extra layers of dead skin more efficiently and can also use the SilkPeel to infuse healing products while exfoliating. This isn't for everyone, however, so it is great that they are both over-the-counter and professional treatments available. Dr. Schlessinger recommends doing a little of both if possible!

3.) Remove makeup at night.

Makeup can clog pores and result in skin damage, premature aging, rashes, irritation and breakouts if you leave it on for an extended period of time. Dr. Schlessinger recommends that you cleanse your skin each evening to allow your skin to breathe and regenerate overnight. Use your favorite cleanser with the Clarisonic Mia, a compact sonic cleansing brush that removes makeup, impurities and excess oil while gently massaging skin.

Eye makeup can cause even more problems for contact lens wearers or people with sensitive eyes. Leaving it on can result in puffy eyes, redness, styes or infection. Remove all eye makeup before bed.

For a great eye makeup remover, try the Klorane Soothing Makeup Remover with Cornflower Water or the glo minerals GloEye Make Up Remover.

Dr. Schlessinger recommends retinol, a vitamin A derivative, for all women over the age of 35. Retinol helps to unclog pores, stimulate collagen production and assist in cellular turnover for brighter, softer, smoother skin. The anti-aging treatment is available over the counter or you can see your dermatologist for a more potent Retin-A prescription.

4.) Use a retinol product or Retin-A after age 35.

With continued use of a retinol product, you’ll see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, a smoother complexion and a more even skin tone. Your skin will feel healthier and look younger.

If you notice changes in a mole's color, height, size, or shape, you should have a dermatologist look at it. You also should have moles checked if they bleed, ooze, itch, appear scaly, or become tender or painful. Use this “ABCDE” checklist to keep an eye out for changes in your moles, which may signal the possibility of skin cancer.

5.) See your dermatologist once a year to check out your moles.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and accounts for nearly half of all cancer cases in the United States. More than 2 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are found in this country each year. For this reason, Dr. Schlessinger recommends seeing your dermatologist once a year to have all of your moles checked and evaluated.
