2018 NFCA COACHES POLL
ROLLA, Mo. (March 5, 2018) - Central Missouri Jennies Softball needed extra innings Sunday afternoon, but were able to snap a four game losing streak with runs in the seventh and eighth inning against Missouri S&T. The game two win salvaged a split with the Miners putting the Jens at 6-12 this season.
Game Two: Central Missouri 5, Missouri S&T 4 (8 Innings)Play-by-Play• Missouri S&T broke a scoreless tie in the third with a two-run double.• The Jennies came right back a half inning later. Allie Dishinger got a run on the board with an RBI single and Lauryn Deer gave UCM the lead scoring Dishinger and Hailey Crabtree with a single.• The Miners though scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie and take the lead, 4-3.• Down to their final at bat, Brenlyn McCoy led off with a pinch hit single. After she was moved over on Emily King’s sacrifice bunt, Payton Summers tied the game at four with a double.• Missouri S&T went down quietly in the seventh, so we headed to extras. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Jennies started with a runner on second. Alexis Koop moved her to third with a bunt and Allie Dishinger broke the tie with a run-scoring double.• In the bottom half of the frame, the inning started with the Miners runner getting picked off second as Dishinger threw behind her. Sarah Brown then got a ground out and fly out to end the game and secure the win.
Jennies Stat Leaders• Dishinger drove in a pair of runs and finisher 2-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.• Lauryn Deer picked up three hits, two RBI and stole three bases. • Kaitlyn Markin scored two runs.• Courtni Smith went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.• Sarah Brown pitched 5.2 innings in relief and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
For the Miners• Hannah Franceschini went 2-4 with an RBI.• Carley Hamann also picked up two hits and drove in a run.• Avery English pitched four innings in relief and gave up two runs (one earned) with four hits and five strikeouts.• Kati Viets started and threw the first four innings giving up three runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Game One: Missouri S&T 4, Central Missouri 1Play-by-Play• Central Missouri started the scoring with a run in the first. Lauryn Deer reached on an error and stole second. Two batters later, Emily King singled to put UCM up 1-0• That was all the scoring for the Jennies though. The lead disappeared just three batters into the bottom of the first as Olivia Young hit a two-run home run.• Missouri S&T tacked on runs in the fourth and the fifth. Young hit a solo home run leading off inning number five to cap the scoring. • The Jennies put the tying run on base in the seventh with two outs, but a ground out ended the inning and the game.
Jennies Stat Leaders• The Jennies collected six hits to the Miners five. Two came from Lauryn Deer who stole a base and scored a run.• Emily King went 1-2 with the Jennies only RBI.• Payton Summers, Courtni Smith and Kaitlyn Markin all had a hit. • Katie Giacone threw all six innings for the Jens. She gave up four runs on five hits with two walks.
For the Miners• Olivia Young hit two home runs and drove in three of the Miners four runs going 2-2 with two runs scored.• Courtney Jackson went 1-2 with a run and an RBI.• Avery English pitched a complete game giving up one unearned run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
News and Notes• Lauryn Deer has eight hits in her last three games and five stolen bases.• The win in game two snapped a four-game losing streak.• Katie Giacone started for the first time since Feb. 17 against Maryville. • Kaitlyn Markin returned to shortstop this weekend after missing the Emporia State Softball Classic.
3
Anderson vs. the Hawks• The Jennies and Hawks haven’t met too often with Coach Anderson at the helm. UCM is 5-1 with their last meeting coming in 2012.
Jennies at Home• These will mark the first games for UCM at home this season. Last year the Jennies were 13-3 in Warrensburg.
Milestones• There are a handful of Jennies closing in on 100 career hits. Makayla Schoonover is the closest with 97. She also could become the second Jennie to ever steal 100 career bases. She stands at 73 which is the fourth-most in team history, and three shy of third place. Allie Dishinger is at 90 hits. • Emily King, who has already surpassed 100 career hits, is also four home runs away from joining the all-time top-10 list. • Alexa Bradley, who made five saves last year is already tied for fourth all-time and Katie Giacone’s four are tie for sixth. The UCM record is 12, set by Mandee Berg. Bradley also needs 16 more strikeouts to reach 100 for her career.
Hanging with Miss Koop• Alexis Koop is off to the best start of her career. She has 12 hits and a .293 batting average. Her four multiple hit games are second on the team.
Deer Season• It was a big weekend for Lauryn Deer. In four games, Deer hit better than .500 picking up nine hits in 16 at bats. She had three multiple hit games in the Jennies four games and was a perfect 7-7 in stolen base attempts. Deer took over the team lead, slashing .379/.403/.397, all team bests.
Productive Outs• The Jennies have hit just one home run so far this season, so they have needed to play small ball to generate some offense. In 14 games, the Jennies have advanced runners with an out 52 times. The team has successfully advanced runners 43.4% of the times they have had the opportunity to via a hit or an out.
Worm Killer• One thing that has not changed from last season is that Alexa Bradley continues to be a ground ball machine. In 22 innings, Bradley has induced 44 ground balls, while also striking out 15 and getting 7 to fly out. Of her 66 outs this season, 66.7% have come on ground balls.
Glove Work• Central Missouri struggled with errors in 2017, committing 81 and sporting a .951 fielding percentage. So far this year, that number has greatly increased as UCM has just 14 errors and a .972 fielding percentage. which is the best in the MIAA and 22nd in the NCAA. The Jennies have not committed an error in eight of their 18 games and are 3-5 in those games. Only one Jennie has made more than one error this season and the Jennies have committed only four errors on the infield.
Stolen Base Success• The Jennies are averaging more than one stolen base per game this season and have been successful on 25 of their 28 attempts. Eight different Jens have stolen at least one base. Lauryn Deer leads the team with 11 and is yet to be thrown out and leads the MIAA. Taylor Dames, Makayla Schoonover and Courtni Smith all have three.
Leadoff Leaders• Jennies are hitting .400 leading off an inning. Allie Dishinger is 7-11 in such situations and Lauryn Deer is 12-22. Alexis Koop and Courtni Smith also have seven hits apiece when leading off an innings.
Model of Consistency • Only one Jennie has started a game this season at catcher, that’s Allie Dishinger. That’s a trend that has continued for a while. Dishinger was the only Jennie that started at catcher last year as well, starting in 55 games. Dating back to 2016, Dishinger has started in 77 straight games at catcher.
