Snow heroHOMAS Tapley, aged six, has received a certificate from
Chesterfield’s Mayor, Coun Alexis Diouf, after clearing around 30
metres of snow and ice.
Thomas, who lives in Croydon, was visiting his grandad, Albert Hardy, in
New Whittington, Chesterfield, during the winter’s heaviest snowfalls in
December.
He decided he wanted to do his bit to make it easier for local people to get
around.
Thomas said: “It was really hard work to move the ice and put grit down. My
gloves were all wet, so I had to use socks as gloves.
“I felt very happy when I had finished because it meant people would not slip
and fall over and my grandad was able to go down to the shop.”

Welcome back! When it comes to eating out in the town centre, there is something new - yet strangelyfamiliar - down Corporation Street. Deborah Wain reports
OU can be forgiven for looking twice when
you step into the stylish new addition to
Chesterfield’s evening food scene – Habanero
Grill, in Corporation Street. For offering a warm welcome is manager Cesare
Viracca who last year was supposed to have retired
from the business after running the popular Santiago
restaurant at Whittington Moor for over 20 years.
It says a lot about the potential of the Habanero Grill
that Cesare, who came to the UK from Chile in 1974,
was persuaded to start a new venture after hanging
up his waistcoat.
And, within weeks of opening, word has got around
about the new place with diners attracted by its
whitewashed interior and lively salsa music - and its
food, of course.
As Cesare points out, there are no other restaurants
in the area specialising in authentic Latin American
and Mexican cuisine and the location is just perfect,
surrounded by bars and close to Chesterfield’s
theatres.
Colleague Mike Firth and I called in after work one
evening and we were instantly transported to warmer,
colourful climes.
The restaurant, a former late bar, is bigger than it
looks from the outside and offers 70 covers in total.
However, because it has a series of interconnecting
rooms, you can find the right set-up for any style of
evening – from tucked-away tables for two to a back
room ideal for a large group.
You can take your own wine on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, which is an added
bonus.
It’s also worth mentioning that there is an entire
upper floor with its own small bar for private parties
where guests can enjoy a hot and cold buffet.
Cesare has seen plenty of changes in the tastes of
the people of Chesterfield and reports that people are
getting more adventurous with what they order.
Head chef Simon Sewell has worked in kitchens all
over the world, including in Hollywood where he
cooked for people like Barbra Streisand and Rod
Stewart. He’s created a menu offering a wide choice,
whether you want to go for a flame-grilled steak or
something more exotic. You can turn up the heat if
you want – after all the Habanero takes its name from
a small, but fiery, chilli!
Mike and I both opted for Mexican favourites. Mike
chose a Grande Chimichanga (£13.50) – a fried
tortilla parcel stuffed with succulent, tasty chicken,
chorizo, chilli and cheese.
I went meat-free with the Fajitas Monterray (£11.90)
– stir-fried fresh chilli-marinated vegetables on a
sizzling platter with soft, warm flour tortillas.
Both our dishes were served with salsa, salad, sour
cream and chips (the potato variety rather than corn
chips) so they were hearty portions but we happily
polished off the lot. In fact, it was one of those
courses that you wanted to keep on eating.
When it came to dessert, Mike and I already had our
eyes on the Churros (£3.60) so, when three women
on the table next to ours all emphatically placed an
order for these, our decision was made. They
appeared to have dined at Habanero Grill before!
If you haven’t had churros, they are a slim, sweet
sugar-dusted fritter and, in my opinion, even yummier
than a doughnut because they’re served piping hot. At
almost two centuries ago. His brewery has a couple of nearby pubs,
The Rose & Crown and The Tramway
How much of a pedigree does Chesterfield have as abrewing town?It has a fabulous pedigree. A hundred years
ago there were three sizeable breweries
operating in Chesterfield – Scarsdale,
Chesterfield and Brampton – doing well,
winning awards and selling lots of beer.
Naturally, our interest is in Brampton whose
origins can be traced back to 1822, but which
in itself has such a rich and varied history.
What's the most unusual beeryou've sampled?I’ve struggled with a banana beer, primarily
because usually a banana tone in a beer
indicates an ester off-flavour, so why anyone
would purposefully brew with it is beyond me.
But I’d have to go for a Rauchbier (smoke
beer) brewed by Schlenkerla of Germany. I’ve
had smoked Porters before that have been
lovely, but the original Schlenkerla is so
heavily smoked it’s like drinking an ash-tray.
How do you pull a perfectpint? That really depends if you live north of, say,
Watford, or not!
Usually, up here you’d make sure there was
a sparkler on the pump, put it right to the
bottom of the glass and leave it there.
Four firm, but not aggressive, pulls on the
hand-pump should leave you with a tight,
creamy head and a pint that settles crystal
clear.
What provides the inspirationfor the naming of your beers?Generally speaking, inspiration comes from
the original Brampton Brewery and local
history.
What's the most memorablelocation in which you'veenjoyed a pint?I’d have to go for my honeymoon; we went
skiing to a beautiful little town in the Colorado
Rockies, called Steamboat. It was half way up
a mountain, looking down across snow-
covered slopes that gently fell away to the
picture-postcard mid-western town in the
valley below.
Which beer from the pastwould you like to see back on sale? The original Brampton Mild. It had such a big
following and was probably the most
renowned of all the beers brewed locally.
What are your other passionsin life?First and foremost, my family. My wife, Julia,
and I have been blessed with two beautiful
boys aged eight and six, and I don’t get to
spend nearly as much time with any of them
as I would like.
I’m also a massive Spireite so enjoy relaxing
at the match on a weekend (with a pint of
Golden Bud at half-time, of course!)
Describe yourself in threewords.Obsessive, Considerate, Restless
Favourite line from a movie?“If you build it, they will come” – from ‘Field of
Dreams’. I swear I heard the same whisper
when we set the brewery up!
What did you have forbreakfast today?Tea and toast.
