M indfulness and Buddhism
In an art icle enti t led “How to Pract ice Mindfulness
(Buddhism)”, i t is stated that “mindfulness ” is the abi li ty to see
things as they are, wi thout the cloud of fee lings , prejudice or even
mood. “Mindfulness” is part of the Buddhis t Eight Fold Path at
number 7: “Right Thought” We should cherish our thoughts
because our words and our act ions arise from our thoughts . And number 8: “Right Medi tation” We should think often of Amida
Buddha and repeat His Holy Name. Namu Amida Butsu.
In western cultures the practice of mindfulness is used as a
therapeutic technique to reduce s t ress , pain , and even help with
depress ion.
You can begin your own mindful pract ice by finding a quiet
p lace, then focus your mind on the present moment —do not th ink about other things—like I must f in ish this project because of an up-
coming deadline, someone said something said something to me to-
day which was not nice, my chi ldren do not l i s ten to me, my hus-
band does not l i s ten to me, my body has so many aches and pains or
whatever the case may be. Do not th ink of these unpleasant
thoughts , but s i t in s i lence and focus on your breathing to elimi-
nate dist ract ions . Practice focusing on nothing.
As you become more mindful of the present , p lease recognize the things around you that you may have taken for granted. Thank
you for each day you are alive. As Bishop Hara a lways says to
reci te the O-Nenbutsu or Namu Amida Butsu ten t imes each day as
you awake and before going to s leep or at any t ime during the day
and thank Amida Buddha for th is wonderful day!
At Jodo Mission, we have been practicing musical medi ta-
t ion which is qui te di fferent and beauti ful ! You s i t quiet ly and
concentrate on your breathing and at the same t ime lis ten to some beauti ful music played on our beaut i ful grand piano. Rev. Nakano
says he likes American music so on Sunday, May 25 for example , he
played “Shuka Tsuki -kage” and then played “My Way”. He always
s tarts out wi th “Shuka Tsuki -kage” which is from a poem from our
founder Honen Shonin and then plays a song like the Beat les song
“Yesterday” or “Pearly Shel ls” or a Japanese chi ldren’s song
“Yuyake Koyake”. We get to calm ourselves for these few minutes !
