A A bowline or a large figure of eight on a byte knot is tied at one end at a point that will create a loop that is 9 feet in circumference or at least sufficient for the bowline

knot to rest above the next set of rungs.

B The middle of the ladder is ascertained bycounting rungs. Once the middle is established,

the firefighter counts up two rungs and passes therope through the hole that the rungs create. Stripsof electrical tape or painted bands can be used to semipermanently identify these rungs. With theladder on the ground, the butt (or base) of the

ladder is gently lifted and the rope slid up to themarked rungs while the slack rope is taken up.

C The knot should be approximately in the center of the ladder between the beams. The ladder is then rolled

over so that the rope runs under the ladder rungs andis arranged to be between the ladder and the building.

D The command to hoist may be given. The tip will tend to lean away from the building and prevent the ladder tip from

snagging on any projections caused by windowsills, protruding brickwork, or any other structural element that

might cause difficulty. Once the rope knot is at the point of raising, the ladder is pivoted on the edge of the structure and gently pulled down on the roof. Then the remaining

portion of the ladder is pulled onto the roof.
