Millwrights access the various areas of the waterfront by pickup truck.

The work can be done at height depending on the structure and location of machinery e.g., conveyors and ship loaders up to ten stories high. Access is by series of stairs and/or ladders, depending on the structure, or by man lifts. Some ship loaders may have a small elevator (two persons) to access the higher levels.

Outdoor lighting can be variable depending on weather conditions and time of day. Interior lighting inside e.g., in machine rooms or control rooms can also be variable (incandescent, fluorescent and/or natural lighting).

Physical hazards include being in close proximity to moving equipment, working at height and working in confined areas. Trip hazards are present when accessing the various structures e.g., ropes, pipes, tools or other equipment on walkways.

Outdoor surfaces can be slippery e.g., wood (docks) or concrete surfaces with ice, or concrete surfaces with spilled product e.g., sulfur

Loud noises are not present while doing preventative maintenance unless equipment is being operated.

Typically no performance pressure is present when doing preventative maintenance.

Essential Job Demands:

Preventative maintenance involves the inspection and maintenance of the various machinery and equipment on site. After a work order is assigned, the millwright crew drives to the site with the required tools. Typically only small hand tools are brought along when doing inspections. Other tools are retrieved from the truck or the shop at break times as needed. Once on site the crew climbs stairs and/or ladders to access the equipment/machinery to be inspected and maintained. Depending on the equipment, inspections are done from above, from the side and from below.

The millwright can be standing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, lying prone and/or working on a ladder, depending on the equipment or structure being inspected. Fall protection is required at times e.g., when walking out onto a boom arm or conveyor at height.

3. Systems Maintenance

Frequency:

Systems maintenance can occur over an entire shift, depending on ship loading/unloading scheduling.

Equipment:

The work tools, equipment and protective personal equipment are the same as for preventative maintenance and repair work.

Environmental/ Psychosocial Factors:

The Environmental and Psychosocial Factors are the same as for preventative maintenance and repair work with the following exceptions:

• One millwright is assigned to do systems maintenance.

• Time pressure may be present e.g., if repairs have to be done quickly to get a machine running again to ensure timely loading/unloading of ships.

• The millwright is in close proximity to moving machinery.

Essential Job Demands:

When equipment is in operation (e.g., when loading a ship with product), the millwright monitors the equipment by walking around and inspecting the equipment to ensure it is running properly. For example, if a switch is thrown due to a clog along the belt line, the millwright clears the clog, inspects the area, and restarts the machine. If repair work has to be done, it is completed at that time if possible.

The millwright walks around and inspects the equipment two to three times a shift e.g., for up to an hour each time. For the balance of the shift the millwright is sitting in the truck or nearby observing operations.

It is noted Systems Maintenance is the easiest of the three primary duties, however, can also be quite difficult if repairs have to completed quickly.

Neck

Stretch the neck muscles periodically throughout the course of the working day. Stretching is a productive way to promote soft tissue recovery, as it increases blood flow to an area of the body. To stretch try rotating the head from side to side, look upwards in extension and tilt the head to the right and left side. Try to hold all stretches for fifteen to twenty seconds at a time.

Take micro-postural breaks to stretch the neck, while engaged in work demands.

Back

Stretch the back muscles periodically throughout the course of the work day through the use of regular postural breaks. Also stretch during break times.

Utilize a man-lift, crane or winch when feasible to transport materials up numerous flights of stairs.

Shoulder

Whenever possible position the body close to the work that needs to be completed to avoid unnecessary forward reaching at outer ranges.

Utilize ladders or man lifts whenever possible to reduce the overhead reaching range

Elbow/Wrist

Perform wrist and forearm stretches periodically throughout the day, this will promote blood flow to the muscles in the arms and hands.

Position self as square as possible to the work task to maintain wrists in neutral or minimize the use of awkward wrist posturing when using tools (e.g., pushing/pulling a wrench or holding a power tool with the wrist flexed)

Anti-vibration gloves can reduce the risk of MSI, by dampening the shock that is experienced while using tools that provide vibration.

Knees

Try to alter positions when working in low level postures (i.e. alternate working with the right or left knee up) if working in kneeling.

Wear gel knee pads when working in low level postures for more than five minutes at a time.

Try to perform stretches during break times, or go for a walk during break times.

Organize work demands or coordinate with partner to minimize repetitious stair climbing.

Utilize a man-lift or crane when feasible to transport materials up numerous flights of stairs.

Considerations for return to work programming:

1. The primary duties, as reported from easiest to hardest are: systems maintenance (except when repair work is required); preventative maintenance; and repair work.

2. Cranes and hoists, as well as consideration of winches, can be used to minimize lifting and carrying demands, especially when hand bombing/carrying tools and equipment up and down stairs.
