For the Herald & ReviewA job fair is a great

opportunity for employersto meet face-to-face with qualifiedapplicants.Job Fairs typically last four or fivehours, and allows an employer thechance to collect resumes andconnect with job seekers.Employers want to spend theirtime wisely, and take time out oftheir busy schedules to participatein a job fair because they can meetdozens of job seekers all in oneplace.

Preparing for a job fair is justas important as preparing for aninterview. At each job fair, employers are greeted by jobseekers who are dressedinappropriately, who bring theirchildren with them, and who do

not appear serious about their jobsearch. Have you made any ofthese mistakes in the past? Do youthink that might be why you arestill searching for employment? Before going to this year’s job fair,do your research and comeprepared! Here are somesuggestions for job seekers toconsider before the job fair:• Update your resume, includeyour most recent work history andbe sure that it is error-free. Askothers to review it for accuracy.• Review the list of employers whowill be at the job fair by visitingthe Herald & Review websitehttp://www.herald-review.com• Research the companies that youare interested in. This will allowyou to carry on informedconversations with the employer. Ifyou know what the company does,it could give you an edge over your

competition.• Be prepared to discuss yourknowledge, skills, abilities, as wellas your educational and workexperience as they relate to thepositions you are interested in.• Dress for success! Remember, you never get a second chance tomake a first impression. From themoment you walk through the doorthe employers will be evaluatingeverything about you as a possibleemployee.• Do not bring your children to thejob fair, ask a friend or relative towatch your children while you aregone. A job fair is no place forchildren.• Bring extra copies of yourresume, an ink pen to completeapplications, and a notepad.

• Turn your cell phone off; you donot want to be distracted whentalking with an employer.

Employers come to a job fairready to hire qualified candidates.Job seekers who are prepared, who look and act professional willbe most successful. You will onlyhave a few minutes to make alasting impression. Imagine yourconversation as a mini-interview,because in fact, that is exactlywhat it is. Offer a solidhandshake, look them in the eye, give your 30-second elevatorspeech, answer any questionsthey may have and ask a fewrelevant questions to learn moreabout the positions they haveavailable. Thank the employer fortheir time, and end by lettingthem know you are interested inthe position (if you are), ask fortheir business card and ask howyou should follow up with themabout the position. When you are finished, walk away

and jot down a few notesregarding your conversation. This can be useful when writingyour thank you note. Sadly, manyjob seekers do not send a thank-you note to the employers theyspeak to at a job fair. However, athank you note shows theemployer that you are seriousabout your job search, that youwant the job and it may help youstand out over other candidates.I cannot guarantee you that if youfollow this advice you will obtainan offer of employment, but I canguarantee you that employers willtake you seriously and that yourchances of landing a job will begreater. •

For the Herald & Review

According to Dept of Labor statistics, only a small percent of jobs are ever posted;and when they are posted, the competition isfierce. Networking has always been one of thebest ways to search for a job, however, with anincreased use in the Internet, the focus ismoving away from face-to-face contact towardvirtual social networking. Job seekers arefinding social media a valuable tool tonetwork for open positions while businessesare gradually using social media to advancetheir recruitment efforts. What exactly issocial media and social networking?

Social media is a way to communicate andinteract with others through the internet usingon-line technology. Social media allows usersto publish or access information in aninexpensive manner. The top three SocialMedia’s used in job searches today include

LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, although, other social networking sites are also growingin popularity. LinkedIn has been known forits job-focused presence; however, other sightsare quickly gaining recognition.Social networking is a way to connect with“friends” or “connections”. Users are requiredto create a “profile” that consists of personalinformation, which can be viewed publically,or only by one’s contacts. As with face-to-facenetworking, social networking will not occurwithout friends and connections. Friends orconnections are allowed to send you messagesand post comments on your profile. You aregiven the opportunity to join “groups”, followemployers, post a resume, etc… “Groups”allow you to connect to people with similarinterests and begin conversations on certaintopics. If you have read a relevantprofessional book, you could begin aconversation on the highlights of the book. This feature allows others to learn more aboutyou and what your interests are. Many

businesses have “like” pages for businesses;this gives you the opportunity to connect withemployers who may have job openings.

Here is what you need to know before youbegin networking using social media.LinkedIn is considered a place to networkwith colleagues and other professionals whileFacebook is more apt to connect you withfriends and family. Carefully crafted profilepages are critical to a successful job search.Social networking can be useful in your jobsearch, but it can also be harmful in your jobsearch if not used properly. The last thingyou want to happen is for an employer to seeinappropriate pictures or commentsassociated with your profile and risk theposition being offered to someone else.LinkedIn has the capability to upload aresume and has other useful job search tools. In this competitive job market, individualsneed to be able to identify their knowledge, skills and abilities and communicate those, as

well as their achievements topotential employers. If youdecide to use social media in yourjob search take the time to do itright. Remember, it is better tohave one complete profile thanthree different profiles that arepartially completed.

Once you identify key wordsthat will help you stand out overyour competition, prepare a 30-second elevator speech to usewhen networking face to facewith your contacts and potentialemployers. In your elevatorspeech, you want to be able to tellwho you are, what skills youpossess and what type of job youare looking for. For students interested in a career incosmetology, that doesn’t necessarilymean stepping from a training

program directly into a salon.“Our students can become manufacturing

representatives, do platform work where theyteach on stage to other stylists. There are lotsof different avenues they can go into,” saidNancy Burnett Cordray, director of careerservices at Mr. John’s School of Cosmetology.“If they want to specialize, they can go domakeup and skincare or focus on nails.Cosmetology entails all of that.”Mr. John’s history of providing cosmetologyeducation in Decatur began in the 1930s, whenthe Decatur School of Beauty Culture and the

Champaign School of Beauty Culture opened. In 1967, the school was purchased andrenamed Mr. John’s, after current presidentJohn Stubblefield.

Since then, Mr. John’s has graduatedhundreds of students — both in Decatur andat the Jacksonville location — who have goneon to careers in the field, most recentlygraduating 30 students in 2009 and 35 in 2010,according to Cordray.

“There’s always people wanting to gettheir hair done, so there are always jobopenings. If you’re willing to work hard, youcan make a good business,” Cordray said. “Itis hard work to build up your clientele. Youreally have to be available and pass out a lotof cards.”

The basic Mr. John’s cosmetology

program takesabout a year tocomplete for adaily full-timestudent,Cordray said, and a part-timenight programwill take about two years. The nail programlasts for four months, while the estheticsprogram takes about eight months.

“The basic adult students get their licenseto go out and do hair,” she acknowledged. “Wealso have a vocational program wherestudents can come in high school and if theydecide to continue, they can get their license…

Representatives from KopetzManufacturing in Decatur will beat this year’s Herald & ReviewJob Fair searching for qualifiedwelders, fitters, machinists, estimators and quality controlinspectors. They will also belooking for an assistant plantsupervisor.

“We hope to hire 10 to 20people this year,” said companypresident, James J. Grady, whobought the global business in 2008.“I got in just before therecession, but we have weatheredthe storm and are now movingforward.”While most of the shop workers

are men who are members of theBoilermaker’s and Ship Builders

union, the company does employone female welder. “It‘s not amatter of sex but rather the skill-set that a potential employeebrings to the job,” said JohnPranschke, the company’sbusiness development manager. And the company is not averse

to hiring a recent tech schoolgraduate who displays a flair forwelding but who needs furthertraining.

“We might hire that person asa helper who would workalongside an experienced welderfor 3 to 5 years until they are ableto work on their own,” Gradysaid.

Applicants hoping to work forthe company have to prove theypossess the necessary skills or theability to learn.

“When a new applicant comesin to apply for a job as a welder, for instance, we administer awelding test that includes a visualinspection and an x-ray todetermine whether or not thereare any subsurfaceimperfections,” Pranschkeexplained. “The results of the testtell us pretty quickly whether ornot that individual has sufficientskills to work here.”

For those applicants hoping tobe hired as fitters, the process isa little different.

“We set them down at a largetable in the boardroom andlayout a detailed engineeringdrawing of a pressure vessel andask them to describe how theywould build it,” Pranschke said.

“Given the pressure the vessel

is designed to maintain, thecandidate needs to be able to tellus the thickness of the steelrequired and be able to explainthe process of putting it alltogether. Again, we can tellpretty quickly whether or not thatindividual has the potential weare looking for.”

The process of building a 100-foot pressure vessel up to 14 feetin diameter, or any other size for

that matter, begins with a roughdrawing from a client which goesfirst to Kopetz’ engineeringdepartment, which uses thelatest version of AutoCad draftingsoftware available. A detaileddrawing is then sent back to theclient. When a final draft hasbeen agreed upon and thecontract has been signed, thework begins. The larger vesselscan take up to a year to build.

The sun never sets on thecompany’s products, which areshipped all over the world.Besides a strong domesticpresence, the company ships itsproducts to The Republic ofChina, Japan, India, Turkey,Brazil, Indonesia, Taiwan,Columbia and Korea, amongothers.

One of the products thecompany fabricates is a Liquid

Natural Gas Vaporizer, a long, cylindrical tube used to convertLNG to a gas that can be used ina home or business. Gas movingto Japan, for example, is shippedas a liquid at more than 200degrees below zero. When theship reaches port, the liquid gaspasses through a Kopetzvaporizer that empties into apipeline, which carries thevaporous gas, at ambienttemperature, to a storage tank ata nearby distribution facility.

The company also specializesin fabricating products for thechemical industry which are builtto ASME —American Society ofMechanical Engineers —standards or better, as are all ofits products.

The company is an outgrowthof the former Superior WeldingCompany, which had been a

fixture in Decatur’s industrialcommunity for many years. But,in 1976, a group of employeesdecided to go out on their ownand formed KopetzManufacturing, Inc.

Besides its new products, thecompany has a specialized 4,000 -square - foot machine shopfacility to meet the needs ofcommercial and industrialcustomers who, in slow times, find it more economical to repairequipment than replace it. And itsengineering division offers basicstructural design capabilities:sizing columns and beams andbracing for facility expansions.

Grady now looks to the futurewith a sense of confidence anddetermination. “As I said earlier,we have come through a verytough recession and we are stillhere. The industry is starting to

grow again and some of ourcustomers are building new plantswhile others have approvedexpansion projects, and they arebeginning to replace the olderequipment with new. So, we areencouraged and we look forwardto meeting our customers needswhatever and wherever in theworld that might be.”

The Kopetz company is asilver level sponsor of the Heraldand Review’s upcoming Job Fairthat will be held at the DecaturCivic Center on Wednesday, Sept.21.

It’s been a long few years of discussions, planning, designing and more, but St. Mary’sHospital is finally down to the final weeks ofPhase 1 completion of its 94,000-square-foot,$31 million remodel project that includes anew emergency room, new laboratory and re-designed hospital entrance.“This gives us an emergency room that is themost up-to-date in design, making it easier forpatients to come in and seek treatment,” saidTheresa Rutherford, chief operating officerfor St. Mary’s.

The re-design of the hospital began threeyears ago when the community was invited tocome in and give feedback on proposeddrawings. Ground was broken almost 18months ago, and in November, the hospitalwill invite the public back again to celebratethe new facility.

“It’s getting to be pretty exciting,”Rutherford said. “On Nov. 5th, we’re doing ablessing and internal sharing inside thebuilding. On Nov. 11, we’re celebrating ourdonors, and on the 13th, we’re having an openhouse for the community. Most times, youdon’t get to see the inside of an ER unlessyou’re sick, so we’re inviting people to comelook before we’re open.”

The hospital is hoping to have the newemergency room open for business inDecember or January, after the inspectionfrom the Department of Public Health iscomplete.

Re-designing the hospital not only givesSt. Mary’s an updated, modern facility withadvanced technology, but also improves thepatient and staff flow in the different areas,Rutherford said. Additionally, the hospital’soutdoor campus will also be improved.

“Part of the re-design involves the way thestreets are, making it easier to not only parkand maneuver but improves the number oftrees and green space,” Rutherford said. “It’sa good physical campus for access, but it alsoinvolves nature.

“Nature fosters additional healing. Wehave the use of the lake from one side, so wewanted to have a greener space on the otherside - walking paths, a healing garden, thingsthat affect the health of our patients and theirfamilies.”

The next phase of the hospitalconstruction project will involve the offices ofPrairie Cardiovascular on the St. Mary’s

Setting goals is often the first step toachieving your hopes and dreams foryourself and your family. Making a plan,

however, is crucial to making those dreams areality. This is especially true when it comes toa college education for your children. Startinga college savings plan when your children areyoung sets you on a path for success and canhelp you reduce the need for expensive studentloans down the road. Establishing a collegesavings plan early and contributing to it oftenis the key to reducing, or even eliminating, student loan debt.

According to FinAid.org, parents who putaside just $50 per month from the time theirchild is born can grow a nest egg of more than$20,000 by the time that child turns 18,assuming a 7 percent return on investment.Increasing those contributions to $100 permonth can yield more than $43,000.

While there are a number of college savingsvehicles to choose from, savers should keep in

mind that a 529 plan is a tax-free and, in somecases, state tax-deductible option. Operated bya state or educational institution, a 529 plan isan education savings plan designed to providefamilies with an easy way to save. Most offeronline enrollment with minimal initialinvestment, as low as $25. Additionally, contributions can be made by more than just achild's parents. Anyone can contribute to anaccount or open one on behalf of a child.

Many states offer a 529 plan and eachstate's plan is different. Morningstar, a leadingprovider of investment research, providesanalysis on the majority of the nation's 529

plans and rates them based on a variety of keyfactors. Additional sources for information on529 plans are SavingForCollege.com as well asCollegeSavings.org.

An example of a top-rated Morningstar 529plan is CollegeAdvantage, Ohio's collegesavings plan. Account owners can contribute toa CollegeAdvantage account for as little as $25and accounts are available to any U.S. residentand funds can be used at any college in thecountry.

"Saving with a 529 plan offers parents, friends and family members an affordable andattainable way to save for their loved one'sfuture college expenses," said Richard Norman, interim executive director of Ohio Tuition TrustAuthority. "Many times, just beginning theprocess can help families feel like college is arealistic and achievable goal."

Key to Affording College is to Have a Plan“Establishing a collegesavings plan early andcontributing to it oftenis the key to reducing,or even eliminating, student loan debt”
