Throughout the history of the Jewish NationalFund, the Jewish community of Hamilton has always been a true partner in developing the State ofIsrael for the Jewish people and the betterment of the quality of life of its inhabitants.

On behalf of the board of Directors of Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, we would like to extend our thanksand appreciation for your devoted support.

We are proud to honour such a distinguished institution as the Shalom Village and to pay tribute toit for its role.

It is especially heartening to see that the proceeds of the Hamilton Negev Dinner will be directedtoward the Kiriat Eliezer Promenade. This project is a very worthy project that will serve the residentsof Haifa and in particular the residents of the Kiriat Eliezer neighborhood. The facelift that the promenade is going to receive a warm welcome by the elderly residents of Kiriat Eliezer that have usedthe rundown facility until now.

May the Jewish National Fund of Hamilton continue its contribution and commitment to Israel.

    Yishar Koach!

    JNF NEGEV DINNER 5768

    1 Iyar, 5768June 4, 2008

There are many prayers that ascend to Heaven. Yet, Abrahams special request seems to baffle the mind. According to Jewish tradition, Abraham beseeches G-d not only to merit length of days but to fully experience the process of aging. In a society that celebrates youth, this appeal seems to be foreign and counterintuitive. What reasonable man would cast aside the vigor of youth for the challenges of old age?

Perhaps, Abraham understood that the process of aging provides us with the perspective to appreciate life in a deeper and more profound way. Life rushes us by, but all too often we rush life by. To be able to take a moment of pause and view life through the prism of experience is truly a blessing.

The Torah instructs us to grant honour to the elderly. This is not only a simple courtesy but it isrecognition of the vast reservoir of knowledge that one gains through a lifetime of challenges andaccomplishments.

In this vein, Shalom Village stands as a hollowed treasure house of wisdom and beauty within our community.

How fortunate are we to be blessed with a community leader such as Pat Morden. Pat is truly agem who is regarded by her industry as one of the top executives in the field. Her unprecedented professionalism is matched only by her heart of gold and spirit of love.

As we celebrate with JNF the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, we salute Pat Morden for all her great accomplishments on behalf of our community.

    With warm wishes,

From this perspective, there is no more obvious Hamilton partnership than this.

This wonderful initiative has opened the doors for all kinds of new and creative thinkingabout how our local institutions can come together in shared initiatives that strengthen our community in Hamilton and also strengthen our efforts on behalf of Israel.

Tonight, we join hands with Shalom Village, with JNF and the entire Jewish communityin our shared and unshakeable commitment to the building of our community and the people and land of Israel. Together, we can never fail.

  • Shalom Village is a dream that became areality through the dedication of ourcommunity. The dream was to make it possiblefor our parents, spouses people we lovedwho needed extra support to remain vibrantmembers of our families and community. Itwas to be a place to call home, a change ofaddress closer to care, but not farther fromtheir lives.

Since its inception in the late seventies,Shalom Village has grown to find new andmore meaningful ways to make life possiblein the face of often overwhelming healthchallenges. Today, home to over 200 people, and home away from home to many more,Shalom Village is a recognized leader andinnovator in providing services to olderadults. These services include long term care, assisted living apartments, a day program foradults, convalescent care and a fitness centrefor people over the age of 70. All of our servicesreflect our mission to honour our Fathers andour Mothers, by providing them the opportunityto get on with their lives, receiving health and social services, convalescent and palliativecare all within the context of Jewish valuesand Kashruth.

RUTHS CHALLENGESRuth is a loving mother with a distinguished career whoseadvanced frontal-lobe dementia haspresented challenges to her entirefamily. She requires total assistancefor all activities of daily living and sometimes exhibits aggressivebehaviour. She experiences severe pain due to osteoporosis and isat high risk for falls. The team who works with Ruth employ theGentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) model developed at ShalomVillage to manage her care.

Since my Mother Ruth moved to Shalom Village in the summerof 2007, I have been profoundly touched by the extraordinarydignity, respect and thoughtfulness of all those involved in hercare, said her daughter Anne. Ruth dedicated her professionalcareer to being an advocate for the needs of children in hospital, who with their families, looked to the staff to help them whenthey were most vulnerable. Now at a critical and vulnerable stagein her own life, the staff of Shalom have reached out to Ruth witha level of care I know she would applaud.

JIMS APARTMENTJim thought he was happy living in his own home. He came toShalom Village to recover from a stroke, fully expecting to returnto his apartment. As he regained his strength he realized just howmuch life at Shalom had to offer and decided stay.

When she arrived at ShalomVillage the Goldies2Home teamfound that she thrived in theirspecialized rehab programdesigned to help people regainthe skills they need for inde-pendent living. Her passion tosucceed in spite of a languagebarrier and health challengeswas inspiring.

    I have my life back!

Josie made many meaningfulconnections at Goldies. She taught the group to make gnocchi withhome-made tomato sauce and she enjoyed walking down to theCorner Store to look at gifts for her grandchildren. During one ofher daily walks, Josie turned to her companion and said I feellike I have my life back!

Through collaboration with the CCAC, we were able to fast-trackJosies admission to Goldies Place regular program based on herrisk for readmission to hospital. Today Josie attends Goldies Place3 days a week and enjoys every minute of it. With the support ofthe Goldies team Josie has been able to stay out of hospital andshe and her husband remain in their home.

MARTHA AT THE SEDERWhen she was growing up thePassover Seder was a specialtime for Martha and her family. It was a communal sharing ofthe Passover story as they madetheir way through the manycourses of the special Passovermeal. After she married and hadchildren of her own she contin-ued the tradition. It was a deeplyspiritual ritual that helped themconnect with each other and thetraditions of their ancestors.

Now that she calls ShalomVillage home the Seder is stillfundamental to Marthas obser-vance of Passover. Marthas sonjoins her and her extendedShalom Village family at theSeder table as they once againrecite their parts and tell thePassover story in their ownunique way.

AMEDEO IN THE GARDENAmedeo is a man of the soil.Coming from a culture thatprizes the gifts provided byMother Nature, he has alwaysvalued the time he spends in thegarden, nurturing seedlings andcoaxing the bounty from the earth. It was more than a pastime ora hobby it was a way for him to provide food for his family.

In a small vegetable patch behind Shalom Village, staff helpAmedeo tend the lettuce, tomatoes and herbs that go into the saladsat Bubbi Bessies Caf. They also help him care for the flowers in theGussie Sobel garden and grow tomatoes in pots on the balcony ofhis dining room on the second floor.

For Amedeo, gardening is a deeper experience that has meaningto him. The possibilities fund provides the staff and resources tohelp him continue to live life on his own terms

JACKS BIG SMILEJack is people person who is known for his big smile. After retiringfrom the insurance business he wanted to keep busy in ameaningful way. He loves volunteering at Shalom Villagebecause he goes home feeling like he has made a difference.

  • The Jewish National Fund KerenKayemeth LeIsrael was founded in 1901to purchase land for the return of the Jewishpeople to its historic homeland. In the 107years since its creation, the organization hasworked tirelessly to restore the land, toenhance and foster environmental quality andto nurture Zionist values.

In the 60 years since Israel achieved Statehoodin 1948, JNFs achievements have includedplanting more than 240 million trees, reclaiming more than 300,000 acres of landfor agriculture, housing and industry, creatingover 1,100 rural villages, building more than4,000 miles of roads through mountainousand desert terrain and establishing some 450regional parks throughout the country.

Largely as a result of the afforestation programme, Israel was theonly country in the world to have more trees at the end of the20th century than it did at the beginning. The trees enrich andconserve the soil against wind and water erosion, somethingwhich is of paramount importance in a semi-arid country suchas Israel.

Israel is also acknowledged as a world leader in water conservationand recycling. Two thirds of Israels land is desert and rain fallsonly for about 50 days a year, between November and March.JNF has partnered with Israelsuniversities and agriculturalorganizations to create Researchand Development facilities in theGalilee and the Negev. It has alsoconstructed over 200 waterreservoirs and dams all over thecountry with a total of more than125 million cubic metres abouteight percent of Israels annualwater consumption.

JNF has always been ready toshare its knowledge with others, both within Israel and beyond, especially in matters relating tothe conservation of resources.Israeli representatives attendedthe 2007 Bali Conference onClimate change. The country is afounding and active member ofthe International Arid LandsConsortium, whose other mem-bers include Egypt, Jordan and anumber of American universi-ties. Most recently, Israel hasbecome a member of theOrganization for EconomicCooperation and Development

(OECD)s Development Centre, a first step towards full mem-bership of the parent organization. It appears likely that thisdevelopment is due in no small part to JNFs past and presentwork in numerous Third World countries and to its skill indeveloping a predator to control the gall wasps which havewreaked havoc in eucalyptus groves in Israel, the MediterraneanBasin, Africa and the Far East.

For the past two years, members of JNF-Australia have workedon World Clean-Up Day inIsrael, especially in the Negevregion. In addition, the supportof JNF-America enabled JNF-KKL in Israel to make eco-pio-neering a part of World Clean-Up Day 2007, through the useof garbage bags manufacturedfrom biodegradable plasticwhich are people and environ-mentally friendly.

Closer to home, several JNFprojects have applications forCanada. Southern Alberta hasarid conditions which are simi-lar to those in Israel and theAlberta government has had torestrict water usage for farmersin these areas. The province iscurrently investing up to $1million in JNF research in Israelin order to gain expertise in dryland agriculture which can thenbe implemented at home - thetreatment and use of recycledwater, effective use of reservoirsand methods of crop growingwhich require less use of irri-gated water.

    2008 JNF-output.qxd 6/5/08 8:58 PM Page 30

  • JNF: Meeting Israels Needs Today and Tomorrow

The government of Manitoba, too, is investing $1 million in athree-year research programme with JNF. Israeli expertise is atwork with the First Nations in Manitoba, especially theMisipawistik Cree community. A delegation led by Chief OvideMercredi visited Israel in 2007, returning home with knowl-edge about cultivating hot-house crops which will enablethem to earn an independent living. They also learned aboutraising fish in the desert, developing agriculture in arid areas, organic farming and cooperation on water usage. All thesemeasures, which are fullybacked by the Manitoba govern-ment, will help to bring to anend the cycle of unemploymentwhich has plagued them formany years, as well as improv-ing their nutrition and dietaryconditions.

Manitoba Minister ChristineMelnick, Canadas only Ministerof Water Stewardship, hasturned to JNF-KKL for itsexpertise in water management. In partnership with KKL, shewill be hosting an internationalwater symposium in August2008 in Winnipeg, to addressissues of shared concern toManitoba and Israel. As well, she has set up a $250,000 schol-arship fund allowing post-grad-uate students from Manitoba topursue their water-related stud-ies in Israel. After seeing thework being carried out at LakeHula during a private visit toIsrael last year, the Ministercommented that KKL-JNF has avitally important role to play in

looking after the environment, especially because of the practi-cal use it makes of its research and investments.

While so much of JNF-KKLs energy at home and abroad is devot-ed to these and other conservation issues, its humanitarian ini-tiatives never cease. In the summer of 2006, for instance, theNes Harim Field Centre played host to families from northernIsrael, who came to take a break from the katyusha rocketattacks on their region. Similarly, in the summer of 2007, two

busloads of families fromSderot were able to escape tem-porarily from the qassam mis-sile onslaught and spend fourdays at the Centre.

The Seniors Citizens ParkPromenade project, which willbenefit from the funds raised atHamiltons 2008 Negev Dinnerwill, like all other such JNF-funded areas, provide relaxationand enjoyment for all Israelis Jews, Arabs, Bedouin, Christianand Druze - and visitors alike. Itis yet another example of the wayin which Jews and non-Jewsaround the world continue to part-ner with the people of Israel intheir common quest for harmony, beauty, the highest quality of lifeand ultimately, shalom peace.

Thank you for helping JNF-KKLcontinue to turn vision into reality.

  • THE PROJECTS

A Seniors Park PromenadeIN KIRYAT ELIEZERAshare of the funds raised from this Negev Dinnerin Tribute to Shalom Village will go toward theredevelopment of a Senior Citizens Park Promenadein Kiryat Eliezer, a small community in Haifa.

    2008 JNF-output.qxd 6/5/08 8:59 PM Page 34

  • Kiryat Eliezer is located in the southern part of Haifa. It is home to many seniors from the former Soviet Union,a number of whom are holocaust survivors. They are pensioners living on meager incomes. Most live in small flatswithout air-conditioning and the gardens around their apart-ment buildings are poorly maintained and have no facilities.

The park is their meeting place. It provides them with anopportunity to meet and chat, play chess and escape theirsmall, confined quarters.

There is an existing promenade in poor condition and it hasno equipment for elderly people. Despite its condition, thepromenade is quite popular among the local seniors becauseit offers shade on the hot summer days and an opportunity tobe outdoors.

With the funds raised from this Negev Dinner, JNF willupgrade the promenade and properly landscape and equip thepark with age-appropriate facilities including park benches, picnic tables, etc.

Honouring our mothers and fathers, whether they are inHamilton or in Haifa is most appropriate. Providing the seniorsof Kiryat Eliezer with a modern, beautifully landscaped andwell-equipped park promenade will enable them to enjoy abetter quality of life in their twilight years.

  • THE PROJECTS

    A PossibilitiesLEADER

Whats in our wheelbarrows? Possibilities! Theflower-filled wheelbarrows found at ShalomVillage help us bring the garden to people whenpeople cant come to the garden. These portablegardens symbolize the possibilities that yourdonations realize hiring and retaining innovative,forward-thinking staff, purchasing equipment andsupplies, inspiring and building the team of staffand volunteers to make it happen year after year.

Possibilities are the seasoning in the soup of life. They are all the things, large and small, that makeevery day worth living. They are the moments thatbring a smile to your face, a laugh to your heart ora tear to your eye. It is the catch in your throatwhen something beautiful penetrates your shelland touches your soul. It is the exhilaration youfeel when you are dancing and the music seems tospeak directly to you. It is the pride you feel whenyou have created something special and it is theconnection you make with others when you shareyour stories. It is the way you felt on that first dateand it is the way you feel when you tell yourfriends about the achievements of your children.

It is all that and more. Your support of ShalomVillage will allow us to continue to bring possibilitiesto our Fathers and our Mothers, now and intothe future.
