BODY:Research bein~ conducted by the Weizmann' Institute o~ Science in

Rehovot, Israel can help pinpoint possible sites ~or dispos~l o~ nuclearwaste. The technique introduced by Professor Eamnuel Mazor o~ the institute'sDepartment o~ Environmental Sciences & Energy Research enables experts todetermine with ~reater certainty whether a ~iven aquifer o~ groundwater is oldor relatively recent.

The researchers say that thi~ distinction is critical in evaluatin~ thesafety o~ sites as potential storage sites. The method is currently beingstudied in Europe. The technique was first used to evaluate wells as potentialnuclear depositories in a study conducted in Switzerland by Mazor's lab, incollaboration with scientists at the ~niversity of Geneva. The research wassupported by NAGRA, the waste disposal branch o~ the Swiss nuclear energyauthority, which has since commissioned other teams to carry out advancedstudies on six wells.

In Sweden, an international tea~1 is applying the method to date wells at theStrippa iron mines, now being considered as a possible nuclear disposal site.Mazor points out that the water in the underground sites could be consideredsafe nuclear storage sites, as the water in them is unable to escape to thesurface or to any other water channels.

not to Sqy it won't h~ppen," he sqid.

But the thre~t is reql, Hartzler s~id, "especi~lly when you looK at the newherbicides th~t fqrmers qre usin~. They ~ll have the Sqme mode of ~ction - theyblocK ~ sin~le enzyme."

And the impact on the avera~e American consumer?

"Probqbly not much," H~rtzler s~id. Th~t's if the problem is controlled byrot~tin~ herbicides ~nd other farm m~n~gefflent pr~ctices.

"But in the worst-c~se scen~rio, if herbicides becqme ineffective," he sqid,"we'd h~ve to restructure the whole fqr~ling system qnd food costs would go up."

L~st year, the world's f~rmers produced about 609 fflillion tons of whe~t,

rese~rchers estifflate.

Weeds are publi~ enefflies to Gressel. Afflong the most damaging to world foodsupplies, he s~id,' -are broomr~pe, which decim~tes be~ns in North Afric~, ~nd

witchweed, which attacks grains sub-Saharan Africa ~nd in southeast Asia.

Gressel s~id some weeds m~y reduce h~rvests by up to 50 percent in some ofthe world's poorest regions.

"As far ~s quality of life is concerned, that's worse th~n AIDS ••• when itis expected to pe~K," he s~id.

The resistance to herbicides is especially prevalent where far~lers grow thesame crop - and use the same herbicide - yeqr after yeqr, Gressel said.

One defense is using smaller doses of chemicals, but such practices don'twork in the lon~ rUn and seeffl to h~ve caused the ~ustrqliqn weed problems, hesaid.

The best defense for SOffle farmers f1lay be elifflinating chemical weed-Killersentirely. Gressel also advises rotating crops and chan~in~ herbicides e~ch year. But the lon~-term solution is gene fflanipul~tion; he said. Anythin~ else is astop~ap.

"The only way to truly curb the probleffl is to develop new geneticallyen~ineered varieties of whe~t that can toler~te a wider r~nge of herbicides, especially the less COfflfflon ones," He s~id.

But he s~ys it is hard to ra~ly support for ~overnfflent help in fightin~

weeds.

'It doesn't have the political push that even fflalaria has' ffluch less AIDS,'he said.

In divine terms, eternity p~sses liKe the blinKing of an eye. Now Universityof M~ryl~nd ~stronomers s~y they h~ve managed to reduce 15 billion yectrs of thehistory of the universe to a 36-second silent video.

The computer-generated t~pe l~cKs ~ plot or ch~racters, but its producersbelieve it is the most precise description so f~r of the motion of galaxiesafter the Big B~ng. They s~y it could help provide better estim~tes of relativecosmic dist~nces, find new g~l~ctic clusters and predict the universe's ultimatef~te.

Edward Shaya, who presented the video ~t a meeting of the AmericanAstronomic~l Society, s~id the only scene shows 569 blue bubbles representing ~n

estimated 2,300 groups of galaxies within 100 million light years of Earth. Asingle yellow bubble represents the g~l~xy group th~t includes our Milky W~y.

The tape is b~sed on a new mathematic~l ITlethod developed by Shaya'scolleagues to estim~te where galaxy clusters were when the universe w~s young. In c~lcul~ting the image, the astronomers found th~t only a rel~tively smallamount of gravity was needed to push and pull the universe into its presentshctpe. That suggests, Shaya s~id, the universe contains only 20 percent of thematter needed to eventu~lly halt its exp~nsion. Scientists have long debatedwhetheT' the universe will continue to expand in the w~Ke of the Big Bang, or, atsome point, stop ~nd begin to contr~ct.

No co~pany was more prominent in pressreports thqn Cetus Corp., the Berkeley, Calif., firm ~enerally considered to bethe leqder in the field of biotechnology. And no man was ~ore often quoted thanCetus president Peter J. Farley, who helped found Cetus nine years q~O qnd now,at age 40, has beco~e the industry1s unofficial spokes~an.

Meeting Farley Cqn be a little disconcertin~. Anyone with both a medicaldegree qnd qn M.B.A. ~ight Cquse that reqction, especiqlly if he heads one ofthe most exciting companies in the U.S., and talks glibly about revolutionizingthe pharmaceutical and chemical industries. But Pete Farley -- as he introduceshimself -- could pass for the coach of q Little Lea~ue team. Big, qffable, withan easy Irish s~ile, Farley is 'a weird and rqre combination of genius and niceguy,' says a collea9ue.

But Farley doesn1t mince words. 'We intend to see Cetus e~erge in themid-1980s as a mqJor factor in several major industries,' he says, chomping onan expensive cigar and trying to ignore a small mountain of pink cqllback slipsnear the phone, awaiting his ~ttention. Farley is fond of talking about'building another IBM' in Cetus, a view he would clearly like to promote withthe press, the public and the investors who hqve poured millions of dollqrs intowhqt is obviously a long-range venture.

There is a reasonqble chance that Farley will make good on his brqs.Already, Cetus has developed a yeqst strain that is currently being tested byNational Distillers & Chemical Corp. and promises at least 30X improvedefficiency over conventional methods for the conversion of biomass to ethylalcohol used in 'gasohol' blends. And in April the company announced that ithad developed a 'bug' that will allow complete conversion of glucose tofructose, a feat that when commercialized will radicqlly alter the $7-billiondomestic sweetener ~arket.

And 'there are a lot of other projects under way that we can't talk about,'Farley says. One of those is the cOJTIPany's w~interferon, an antiviral l'

On 3/8/93, I I Assistant District Attorney(ADA), Erie County, Amherst, New York, advised the originalcharge of "misuse of a computer" lodged against tile subject wasreduced to a charge of "disorderly conduct." ADA L Iexplained sUbject was allowed to plead guilty to the reducedcharge for the following reasons: this is his first offense;officials at the state university of New York at Buffalo (UB),where the subject attends college, were not "overly anxious" tohave the matter pursued; and the matter is of investigativeinterest of the FBI. According to ADAI I, the subject is nowguilty of a violation and not of a crime.

On this same d~ae lappeared in Amherst TownCourt before Town Justice ::rand pled guilty to thereduced charge. Justice Iimposed the following sentence on b6the sUbject: $100.00 fine plus $45.00 mandatory surcharge and 40 b7Chours of community service at UB. I Iwas also ordered tostay away from unauthorized computers. During the proceedingsI ladvised Justice I Ihis parents were financing hiscollege education.
